Gemma Ward to Quit Modeling Over Weight Gain Attacks

Catwalk cattiness has claimed a victim!

Australian supermodel/sometimes actress Gemma Ward is quitting the modeling business amidst criticism about her weight, the model's agency told the Daily Telegraph.

The 22-year-old beauty has been the subject of Internet taunts after being spotted with a fuller figure last week, the paper reports.

Photos of the more voluptuous model surfaced online, and comments poking fun about her piling on the pounds reportedly followed. (In related news, we've taken away Karl Lagerfeld's laptop.)

Ward has been the subject of fierce scrutiny about her weight since she took a break from modeling early last year in the wake of rumored boyfriend Heath Ledger's death in January 2008, according to the paper,

Clearly, the attacks have taken their toll.

"Gemma hasn't committed to returning to modeling any time soon," a spokeswoman for her agency, Vivien's Model Management, told the paper.

Ward's weight gain made headlines this past January when she hit an Australian beach in a bathing suit that showcased her new curves.

"I was really surprised when I saw her, considering what she used to look like," a source told the Sunday Telegraph at the time. "I had to do a double-take after I saw how much weight she had put on."

While there's no doubt that Ward has put on some weight, we think the public needs to cut her some slack -- we'd rather see bodacious than bony any day! Besides, these days, the catwalk is showcasing varying body types.

What do you think? Should Ward let the critics stop her from modeling? Leave a comment (above left)!

While Gemma Ward is blasted for being too heavy, Miranda Kerr was recently called out for being too skinny.

The first picture of her looks like a walking skeleton. The outfit is very loose but her shoulders and arms are just bones. I don't know who started the fad that models should be so thin. Just put the clothes on a stick and you would have the same thing. The other picture of her looks like a normal healthy woman and her clothes look fine on her. Women just need to be themselves and ignore the fashion magazines. It just goes to show you how shallow we are when we pay so much attention to fashion. Life has a lot more to offer us.

I won't date a girl that weighs more than I do, and I weigh 120 pounds (5-7) and am 46 yrs.old. I don't know why I'm just attracted to bony skinny women. I guess that's why our Lord created women of all sizes and people with different tastes.
As far as what an individual woman weighs, well, whatever weight she feels comfortable at is fine. Peer and especially PARENT pressure should be left out of the equation wether your thin, medium, or large.

I'm sure she looks beautiful with more weight. The people picking on her are just doing so because they're fat themselves and need to pick on someone else to make them feel better.

Seriously... you never leave high school it seems.

Gemma should continue modeling and just forget about the people who are criticizing her.

As an Eating Disorder and Body Image therapist, I am continually appalled at the public's scrutiny over models',and actresses' bodies as if they are a commodity and an object rather than a human being interacting in the world. Yes, they have been hired for their looks, but the public does not own them. They are feeling human beings who may put on weight and lose weight at different times in their lives just like the rest of us. It is not a statement of who they are. Please stop focusing on weight and just accept that people change and change again. If someone is in pain, eating or not eating is a common reaction. The loss of someone close is often the precipitating factor for weight fluctuation, hence Gemma's withdrawal from the public eye. That was very insightful of her to leave modeling and the hype and ownership that appears to go along with it. We are all just humans trying to get through life as best as we can. People need to focus on their own lives and leave these women to live their own as they choose. Get a life, as the saying goes!

I absolutely adore Gemma Ward. I think she looked beautiful as a so-called "bag of bones" and I think she looks beautiful now. With a stunning face like that I wish she wouldn't quit modeling!

So the latest b.s. hits the press...Not only is she slimmer than 75% of most women I know, her face is to die for.
How sad people had to harass this beautiful, talented woman.
I think the standards for female beauty in the world are ridiculous- anorexia is a progressive disease that can cause death.
The people who speak against women like Ms. Ward are the ones perpetuating the myth that underweight, starving women are the only women that are beautiful.
Besides, with her face, 500 pounds couldn't make her ugly!
-pissed off in Oregon
PS Ms. Ward- You oughtta do whatever u want in life, if u want to model don't let these idiots stop you! You are beautiful and thin, they are jealous.

Shame on all those who criticize her on her looks. First of all most of you are probably ugly and over weight, secondly there's nothing wrong with a woman not being crackheadishly skinny and having curves and meat on her bones. She is beautiful period. This is the reason most women think they're overweight and have no substance because their too busy worrying about how they look.. the media and magazines are evil stop supporting something that makes you insecure and self conscience. Most of the women in those magazines either starve themselves, make themselves throw up or are couldn't gain weight because of their natural physique. Looks don't last forever and there's more to women than looks and unfortunately most have forgotten that. I personally prefer a women who is healthy and has personality.

I also think she looks much better now. I hope she reads all these reviews & doesn't listen to the idiots in the fashion industry who expect all women to be pencil thin and look sickly. I am looking forward to seeing more variety in body shapes on the catwalk. The designers who only make things for Size 2 women aren't really talented at all. How hard is it to make something look good on a skinny person. The designers who make apparel that look good on the average woman, with flaws & curves, are the real geniuses!

Gemma should not give up modeling. She is NOT fat! Society has gotten it TWISTED. Curvaceous does NOT mean FAT. Designers need to get the message that the average size woman is not a size O. The outfit she is wearing on the street in the photo that appears in this article is obviously something she quickly threw on probably to just run out to the store. We can't really get a good look at her size -- only that she is NOT fat in the photo. She looks anorexic in the catwalk photo that appears on the same page.

It is not natural, nor healthy, for women to be razor-thin as designers demand of the catwalk models. Designers think that if a model is not bony it will detract from the garment, that people will not pay attention to the details of the GARMENT but only to the curvaceousness of the model. But, on the street, people will be paying attention to the "whole package": the garment and how well it looks on the person. So, why shouldn't a woman on the catwalk represent the average size woman? As long as the woman's body is properly proportioned and toned she should be allowed on the catwalk. Real life women are SUPPOSED to be curvaceous which does not mean FAT, as it's being interpreted to mean by the fashion industry. Stay in the game Gemma if that is your passion.

I dunno why people have to get up in people's business about their weight. As far as I've seen there's models of all shapes and sizes. And last time I checked a majority of america is in the larger to plus sizes. I wouldn't doubt a lot of people doing the criticizing are larger than she is at the weight she is now. People need to stop caring what other people think and be happy with how they are. If you're that conceited that you have to be an exact weight or pants size I dont know what your point in living is. Thats not living, its ridiculous.

Any woman is going to look much better with some meat on her bones, rather than just skin stretched over her bones. Healthy looking vs sickly looking.

It is probably for the same reason I don't like skinny short men. I am 5'9" and I don't like to tower over a man. I like to be able to look up to him, especially when we dance. You probably want to feel more manly, not dominated by a female.

I love a woman with some curves. This woman is beautiful! Girls, stop being so critical of yourselves. You are beautiful just as you are. As long as you are healthy and take care of yourself, you are beautiful! Forget that model type of being skin and bones crap. Beyonce is one of the best examples of that. Woman are meant to have curves.

Could there be a plot afoot to blur the line separating the male and female body? There are those in some quarters that question the agenda of those in the fashion industry that get to decide which female body shapes look better in clothes. There are some who question whether there's a plot in the fashion industry to stigmatize the curves of the female body in an effort to level the playing field when determining what makes an attractive, sexy body to the opposite sex. The soft, round, curvy body of the female, or the non-curvy body of the male? If there is no physical, bodily distinction, there is no competition between genders. I'm just sayin'...that's the spin some are putting on this stigma against female curves.

Call me crazy but come on! Someone like this girl should not be criticized for putting on a few extra pounds, especially someone in such a spotlight as this woman. Girls today are bombarded with such crazy expectations from things like TV, Magazines, and Movies. It's rediculous. So what if she put on some weight?! It happens to everyone!
I think the tabloids and newspapers who think that's she's "Overwieght" and now deemeed unsexy or whatever should grow up.
Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

This is just sad, she looks healthy and fine and because of all the braindead comments and attacks on her for putting on some pounds she is going to quit? I think it sucks that she is that weak and should tell the world where to kiss and keep doing what she does. I mean this makes you wonder everyone says models are hot etc etc and oh so perfect but its like their self esteem is scraping the bottom of the well.

This is so ridiculous! Oh, it's so funny because she may have gained a few pounds so let's poke fun. Are you kidding me? This whole weight thing is completely out of control, is it any wonder why there are more and more girls and young women with eating disorders?! It's all completely stupid and juvenile. Nobody is perfect and nobody should be made fun of.
