Designs barely straying from the originals turned up on the runways of Lanvin, Prada and Hermès. Prim-and-proper trench coats, satin blouses and pearls are suiting the older set along with the over-one-eye Veronica Lake coif.

Here's to busting one of the oldest American style myths in the glossy books. French women do, in fact, get fat. While we've always thought every one of our Parisian female counterparts could wear clingy pencil skirts and horizontal stripes, a Roche pharmaceuticals study revealed 15 percent of the women in France are obese, while a further 26 percent are overweight.
