Gap Holiday Ad Causes Religious Controversy

Well, bah humbug.

Earlier today we reported that Gap had turned to "Glee" for inspiration for its new "Holiday Cheer" ad campaign, which features the tagline "Go Christmas, Go Hanukkah, Go Kwanzaa, Go Solstice" in its inclusive "Happy Whateveryouwannakah" ad.

Now, however, a Christian group has announced that they will boycott Gap Inc. because they feel the ads are "offensive," Brand Week reports.

According to Brand Week, the American Family Association has planned to boycott Gap and associated businesses (including Old Navy and Banana Republic) through Christmas Day. The group reportedly feels that the lighthearted ads poke fun at religion.

"It looks like an attempt to patronize people," AFA representative Randy Sharp told the publication. "What they did was almost make a joke out of it."

Gap has countered the group's anti-religious claims, saying that it "is and has always been an inclusive, accessible brand in which everyone can participate and we embrace diversity across all of our customers, and more importantly respect their beliefs as individuals... We focus our marketing on the joys of the holiday season as a whole," the company said in a statement released to the media.

"Our brands have periodically used Christmas in their holiday season advertising. With this year's Gap and Old Navy ads, we hope that the AFA will update its Web site, which has claimed that Gap Inc. 'refused to use the word Christmas in its advertising.' This is untrue."

Do you like the ads? Or will you be boycotting? Leave a comment!

And get the inside scoop on how one of the most whimsical holiday traditions is put together.

Well that's great! I am proud that you stand up and confess Christianity. However, I can't help wonder why you would not oppose a business, any business, using an ad that disparages Christianity or any other religion. You don't seem to understand what is happening to religious freedom in America.
Homosexuals are now protected with a forced bill added to the Military Funding bill in the middle of the night. Our pastor cannot even preach the word of the bible against homosexuality for fear of being arrested for a hate crime. GOD HELP US!
I still can't help but wonder if you are a college student. I was a liberal too when I went to college.
I know my beliefs and my morals and will not compromise them and support a business that disparages any religion.
In as far as you always being right--you are right for anyone that supports the demise of religious freedom.

I think the GAP ad is cute and doesn't disparages any religion thats just my opinion. As for religious freedom I don't fear that it will not be going away there will always be religion.

I support gays rights and there right to get married doesn't hurt me if Larry or Joe want to get married. And I don't believe that the bible say that being gay is a sin and I doubt any church pastor is going to get arrestted for saying that being gay is sin. I think gays should be protected by the law.

I have been out of college for years I'm not a liberal I don't support health care bill I do believe that Health Care needs to be reform and I think the healthcare bill is highly confusing. I also don't believe in Cap & Trade either. I voted for John McCain in 2008 election.

First of all, I think it is really nice to finally see a holiday commercial that embraces everyone! If you find this commercial to be offensive, then obviously you are narrow minded and ignorant. If you want to preach to someone about christmas why don't you try doing a little research. Base your arguments/comments on actual, factual, historical information. Not just the christian version of history, but the actual, what really happened version. So much of the crap that occurs in this country is based out of igonorance and could be avoided. But, like they say, ignorance is bliss, and the majority of our country is blissed out!

Quite CORRECT!

You would be surprised how many posters know almost NOTHING about how and why this country was founded. They are ignorant of the facts concerning much of this country's history. They somehow believe that this country was founded as a christian nation....LOL

I actually had one poster tell me last month that the Info I posted about the Pledge was wrong, and that it was Created with the words, One Nation under god" in it by the Founding Fathers just after 1776, and If I remember right, that Ben Franklin had a lot to do with writing it. HOW stupid can one poster get?

Christmas should have nothing to do with shopping. I really don't think that's what Jesus' birth was about. So Gap commercial or no Gap commercial, the whole view of AFA is way way off what Christmas is about. To get so worked up about a freaking company! Who cares what their ads say! Does the Gap commercial really validate or invalidate Christmas that much for people? Wow, sounds pretty shallow.

First, everyone should read this link. It is the ENTIRE press release from Gap Inc. Gap's commercial and Old Navy's future commercial will use the word 'Christmas'. I am a Christian and yes, the AFA is a bunch of nuts. too conservative.

Second, I am an employee of Gap Inc. and I can say first hand that this claim against Gap is FALSE. I am employed in one of Gap's brand stores and the music we play all day mentions Christmas, Christmas and even "The New born King." Maybe the AFA needs to get their facts straight.

I just want to say that I'm currently writing a paper on this subject for my college English class. My paper isn't about what the holiday should be called, but rather that it doesn't need to specifically be under any of these names. I want to say upfront that I am a Pagan. I celebrate Yule and the Winter Solstice, but you know what? I also celebrate Christmas with my Christian family and friends. I go proudly to the Midnight Mass Service and hold the lit candle while the choir sings. The reason is that this time of year I don't see why anyone should be bickering. This is the time of the year where all friends and family members should set their differences aside and just love each other and celebrate the year gone by with gifts and gatherings. Once you get down to it, why should it matter that we celebrate in different ways? Everyone is celebrating basically the same thing, birth and rejuvenation.
I am severely disappointed with the way people are taking this. Christians especially have no reason to attack other people for their religions at this time. First off, your holiday isn't even an original holiday. You copied off of the Pagans. I'm not saying that you should stop celebrating, because the celebration of the birth of your savior is not only important, but is vital to your beliefs. As I have said earlier, I deeply respect the fact that you want to not only support your religion but celebrate it in a way that forms a link with the people you love this time of the year. I'm just saying that you should acknowledge that not only have other LEGITIMATE religions been here longer, but your holiday was formed around a Pagan holiday in attempt to cover it up.
The second reason I believe that Christians should not be overly offensive towards other religions is because who are you to try and force your religious beliefs on us? I don't think you should HAVE to celebrate Yule just because it's my religion and it was here first, so why do some Christians believe that Christmas should be the only holiday this time of the year? It's pure ignorance and idiocy.
This time of the year should be a JOYOUS event, and more and more I sit down to CHRISTMAS eve dinner, and awake on CHRISTMAS morning, only to see my parents are getting more and more stressed because of the holiday season and the way people behave around it. I believe that for any religion this is a form of heresy. Why would you purposely make a holiday miserable for other people? All religions are here for the same reason, so we can believe in something and hold it close to our hearts. Why would anyone want to turn around and hurt someone because of what they believe in and love? The people that do are sick, twisted people. And when I say that I mean I don't care if you're Pagan, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, WHATEVER. That's a horrible way to live and all of you people who try to shove their beliefs onto others or belittle people are ignorant and disgusting.
The reason why I say Happy Holidays to people is because everyone has the right to celebrate their own religion, no matter what. If I'm talking to a Christian, I don't mind saying Merry Christmas, even if I don't believe in Christianity. This is a time of the year when if we only reach out to each other a little bit and stretch our understanding of one another we could all easily fit in and celebrate together. Why not give it a try?

Some of you say you are Christians, but find no offense to someone perverting a holiday that has been set aside to remember the gift God gave us with his son. Yes I understand the pagan roots, for the date that Christmas falls on, but in America, and most of Europe Christmas has only been celebrated by the masses for the remembrance of God's greatest gift to man.

It is not about FREAKING out, it is about the idea that kwanza, and solstice would be given the same respect as Christmas that I find offensive.

The cool thing about freedom of speech is that they have the right to do this, but I have the right to say I hate this. I will not support their company or their products because of this.

Whatever a person's motivation freedom of speech always goes both ways.

I'm not a member of any 'group'. I was furious with the ad and told them (The Gap) so. I decided to boycott on my own. I haven't seen the commercial lately. I hope The Gap pulled it. It won't matter this year, I am still going to boycott them. I am beginning to hate the word 'diversity'.

I've been a Christian since high school. I said the sinner prayer, gave my life to God and have worked as a youth pastor in full time ministry. These people are complete goof balls. They don't represent real Christians and the real Jesus who is loving, caring, and has little time to worry about such ridiculous issues. I doubt God really cares what words are being used in little television commercials when children are starving to death in Darfur, women are being brutally raped and murdered in Afghanistan, and young girls are being forced into sex slavery in Thailand. These are the issues groups like AFA should concern themselves with. Why don't they focus their time, money, and attention to something God really cares about? They are supposed to be protecting family’s right? Well the divorce rate in America is over 50%...where's the outrage in that? What’s the matter with people? Let’s focus on those who really need to be saved and leave the petty stuff to the petty.

Go Gap! Go Gap! Go Gap!

I celebrate the Winter Solstice ... and I think this is the first commercial in the U.S. to recognize solstice!

I guess that the AFA would disagree with the bumpersticker:

Solstice is the Reason for the Season

Hey Gap! Thank you!

Eric
