Gap Holiday Ad Causes Religious Controversy

Well, bah humbug.

Earlier today we reported that Gap had turned to "Glee" for inspiration for its new "Holiday Cheer" ad campaign, which features the tagline "Go Christmas, Go Hanukkah, Go Kwanzaa, Go Solstice" in its inclusive "Happy Whateveryouwannakah" ad.

Now, however, a Christian group has announced that they will boycott Gap Inc. because they feel the ads are "offensive," Brand Week reports.

According to Brand Week, the American Family Association has planned to boycott Gap and associated businesses (including Old Navy and Banana Republic) through Christmas Day. The group reportedly feels that the lighthearted ads poke fun at religion.

"It looks like an attempt to patronize people," AFA representative Randy Sharp told the publication. "What they did was almost make a joke out of it."

Gap has countered the group's anti-religious claims, saying that it "is and has always been an inclusive, accessible brand in which everyone can participate and we embrace diversity across all of our customers, and more importantly respect their beliefs as individuals... We focus our marketing on the joys of the holiday season as a whole," the company said in a statement released to the media.

"Our brands have periodically used Christmas in their holiday season advertising. With this year's Gap and Old Navy ads, we hope that the AFA will update its Web site, which has claimed that Gap Inc. 'refused to use the word Christmas in its advertising.' This is untrue."

Do you like the ads? Or will you be boycotting? Leave a comment!

And get the inside scoop on how one of the most whimsical holiday traditions is put together.

Well, I could care LESS what the AFA does. I am a conservative Republican who is in love with the Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart. It is because of James Dobson that Sen. Thompson was thrown out of the race and he was the only Reagan Republican in the bunch!

I think the ad is ridiculous--why? Because they are targeting CHRISTMAS buyers. It is the CHRISTMAS holiday. CHRISTMAS. I could care less if some small sect that hardly contributes to the economical frenzy of Black Friday & subsequent shopping season gets offended. The whole reason for economical growth during this time of the year; the whole reason for the Season; the whole beginning and end to this whole subject is CHRISTMAS--the celebration of the Birth of Jesus Christ. You tick off the Christians and all this talk is meaningless because they aren't going to take their money and spend at your store. End of story.

So, will I buy at Gap? Um, no. The season is "CHRISTMAS" and the holiday is "CHRISTMAS"---not "Whateveryouwantakah"

This must be the same right wing faction of christianity that support the teabaggers, rush the oxy king and wacko beck. christians do so much good around the world helping the sick and the poor that real christians must be offended by their right wing faction as much as i am with the same group of right wing americans who are no more american than these people are christian.

As usual the commentary falls into three basic catagories:

1. The "I am too weak-minded to be commited to anything" liberals who ALWAYS say "Hey, what's the big deal?" to pretty much every issue.
2. The reactionary ultra-conservatives who bash away without first thinking the whole thing through.
3. Then, we have the spammers, who use this forum to post their useless trash.

Can't even ONE person have something unique and individual to say? Probably not. If you fall into one of the three catagories listed, please do us a favor and spare us the rhetoric. No one is listening anymore.

I too am a Christian. And, no, I am not going to "get over it". That's the problem now with the Christians, they won't stand up and scream. But we're starting too and we also stand with the conservatives. It's o.k. for Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, atheists, agnostics and every other supposed minority group to complain and petition for their supposed rights and against conjured discrimination. Political correctness is crap and I, plus 1,000's of others are tired of it. It's time to return to real values and morals and I will spend the rest of my life advocating for exactly that.
It seems that the intellects in our nation and government just can't put their finger on the problem with the violence and hatred in our schools, workplaces and communities. They are real geniuses. There's one simple answer! We have allowed the socialist and atheist in the government to remove God and Jesus Christ from almost every part of American life. And then these pseudo-intellects "just can't figure out what's going on in our society". Duh!!!
No, I won't be shopping at Crap, Old Navy or Banana Republic. Let the atheist and socialist shop there for the time being. However, they won't be shopping there very long as we see them close their doors. Watch for it! It'll happen!!

Your a biblethumber Bob that has no morals or ethics and trying to shove them down peoples throat and everything you have said is a load of crap. It's called GAP to crap you haven't ever shopped there. Your also being judgemental as well saying that only socialist shop at GAP and the other stores which your wrong and I'm not a socialist or COMMIE Bob so it's best not to say those words just because people choose to shop at GAP. Your also a bigot as well.

I really wish Christians would get over themselves! There are numerous holidays that comprise the "Holiday Season." Why on earth are they crying foul over acknowledging another culture's holiday in addition to their own? I can't recall an instance where, for example, Jewish people boycott businesses because they didn't reference Hanukkah separately and above all other holidays. Grow up! Our country and culture encompasses many, many different races, religions and beliefs. Get used to it. The biggest offense of the entire season is the crass commercialism that abounds. And the commercials---OMG!--"you don't really love someone unless you spend way too much money on material things for them."

AFA give me a break! I guess you always need something to complain about and boycott. I will make it a point to buy at these stores this year! Just about everything that is Christmas is based on old non-Christian religions.

Gap is simply acknowledging the different ways people celebrate Christmas. I don't think it has anything to do with avoiding the word Christmas. As a Christian you must understand that religion doesn't start and begin with only one set of beliefs. People celebrate the holiday through many different channels. How about this? Its a commercial ad to appeal to you to purchase items for the holidays. That even isn't what the holiday is about in the first place...buying stuff. So what you are in essence saying is that YOU are mad because the holiday day ad to convince us to buy more stuff that we probably don't even need is offensive to Christian groups who shouldn't be celebrating Christmas through consumerism in the first place. Choose one or the other. You either celebrate Christmas for the true reason, which has nothing to do with materialism or you can feed into ad campaigns and go along your merry way shopping for the holidays. You can't have it both ways.

I am a christian and i think the group is out of control. They are over reacting. I think that Gap inc. was trying to say that its okay to celebrate whatever and under gap all religions can share a common shopping venue. Not that religion is pointless or whatever they think Gap is saying.

Because of this boycott i say everyone supports Gap Inc. and buy most their holiday gifts from Gap Inc. (Banana Republic, Gap, Old Navy)

It's easy to see this as a nice commercial, and to not take it seriously. But, this is just the latest attempt to desensitize people to Jesus, and the meaning of Christmas. And what better way to water it down than to throw in a bunch of other religions and their holidays?

Gap stinks! Their clothes are poorly made and over priced, Old Navy's are even worse! I stopped shopping both several years ago when my kids grew out of Baby Gap, and there was no way I was going to buy the "hooker" clothes they try to pawn off as 'little girls clothing'. Baby Gap also plays completely inappropriate adult music in their kids stores. Regarding their disrepect of Christmas (which is why there's a holiday...), I simply don't shop there, I stand behind my principles. The large majority of main stream culture - TV, hip- hop and painful hollywood - is not worth getting upset over. I do my part, live a Christian life and know God is the final judge. There are many out there that should pay much closeer attention to their final judge. Lastly, God Bless the American Family Association for all their hard work!

Peace

ckandrus2001, you are so far from being correct. I would guess that you are not a christian! Here is the meaning of Christmas: "Historically, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth to a young maiden from Galilee. Theologically, Christmas is the celebration of the incarnation of God in Jesus the Christ, the self-revelation of God to the world in human form for the reconciliation of humanity to Himself." How does Happy Holidays express it is Christ's Day?
