Tyra Banks Apologizes Over Bi-Racial Episode of 'ANTM'

Tyra Banks apologized today if she offended anyone with the recent photo shoot featured on "America's Next Top Model" where contestants were painted in dark makeup to depict bi-racial women.

"I apologize because that was not my intent," said Banks."It's my number one passion in my life to stretch the definition of beauty. I listen to many heartbreaking stories of women who thought they would be happier if they looked different. I want every girl to appreciate the skin she's in."

The explanation took up the first seven minutes of her daily talk show, "The Tyra Banks Show" which today featured the contestants from her reality show for aspiring models. She spoke emotionally about her desire to create something beautiful with the shoot, and said she was proud of it. Banks also mentioned her own struggles as a black model in an industry that is dominated by white models.

One audience member, who had written a letter to Banks, said the episode made her see her own bi-racial heritage in a more positive light.

The controversial episode of "ANTM" sparked debate both in the media and among viewers; some critics saw the use of dark makeup as bordering on blackface.

In the shoot, models were made up to depict various racial and ethnic combinations, such as "Russian-Moroccan," "Native American-East Indian" and "Botswanan-Polynesian."

Banks said the goal was to create an editorial celebration of the "Hapa," the Hawaiian word and concept of mixed race. Coincidentally, two prominent fashion magazines – French Vogue and V -- also recently featured white models painted in dark makeup.

Give me a BREAK!!! There was nothing wrong with the episode of the girls doing the PHOTO SHOOT with dark makeup. These people complaining about anything and everything needs to stop. Get medication or get a life. There is so much nit picking about nothing, this is a good show leave it alone.

Offended? I'm offended by the idiocy of the ANTM show. I'm also offended by people who wear clothes that don't fit and by people who drive those ugly "Element" cars. So what????? This world is getting insane with all this political correctness. My advice is to grow up and get a thicker skin.......of the right color of course!

Wow! I'm happy to be able to speak out and have an opinion. That is most important to me! Who cares what background or ethnic group you come from, especially what your skin color is. Beauty comes in all forms, shapes, sizes, and obviously colors! For all those of you loud and proud people who were offended by Tyra's bi-racial episode take a chill pill! It was artsy and simply spectacular! Those negative comments just straight-out come out as pure jealousy and ignorance! Sounds to me like you guys have bigger inner issues to resolve if this type of thing struck-a-chord Remember people its entertainment! Kudos Tyra!

I dont believe tyras idea was intentionally racist, but with all the models who are biracial trying to break into the modeling world, it would make sense to cast them and not do this as a way to present their beauty, etc

to me i dont see anything wrong in what they did with the faces.. if your going to model and are asked to do it .. if your not offended by what your doing.. nothing wrong with it.. there was no mocking or trying to belittle the models.. it was all done tastefully.. but TYRA if you feel the need to say sorry then hats off to you.. but in my eyes you did not wrong.. an i am a white woman.. this world has come to picking on anything an anybody just to get a rib out of the media.. what ever happened to just being able to live an work.. i am so dishearten over having to suffer with the economy why do others have to focus on things that to me are meaningless..

I don't find what she did offensive. They were in Hawaii and celebrating hapas. I don't know why anyone but bi-racials are getting their nose into this because as an African-American female it doesn't concern me or anyone else. I can under stand bi-racial models being upset because Tyra eaily could have used them instead of " painting" some girls. Still in the end, she was simply celebrating culture. People often look down on people who are bi-racials and she was showing how great and interesting they are. So all of of you adults out there who are making a big issue about this should feel immature, because a highschool sophomore can think about this more reasonably.

every one is "mixed race". no matter the color of one's skin, EVERY one has different blood lines of different peoples running through their veins. i don't care how light or dark some one's skin is. every one can trace their ancestry to many different groups, cultures, etc. of people. to say some one with a black father and white mother is "bi-racial" is erroneous. first of all, there is no such thing as "bi" racial. every body has more than two "races" of people in their genetic make up. secondly, white and black people each have several different blood lines. so every single person on this earth is MULTI racial.... which people would know if they traced their ancestry all the way back to the beginning, or at least as far back as possible.

Just so you know, "Hapa" is NOT a Happy Word, and belongs in the same category that the "N" word or Mulatto is in. Hawaiians happen to be the most racist of all Americans, and hate White Americans as much as they hate Black Americans, and if it were up to them, would rather align themselves with other Asian countries and Kick America to the curb, (Although they would still want us to fly there and spend our money, as long as we left all the Poorer for our intrusion into their paradise!).
I guess when you have a Limited education, Hapa sounds alot like Happy, and that makes it alright.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hapa
In the Hawaiian language, hapa is defined as: portion, fragment, part, fraction, installment; to be partial, less. It is a loan from the English word half. However, in Hawaiian Pidgin (the creole spoken by many Hawai'i residents), hapa has an extended meaning of "half-caste" or "of mixed descent". Mary Pukui & Samuel Ebert's Hawaiian Dictionary define hapa as: "of mixed blood, person of mixed blood as in hapa hawai'i, part Hawaiian." [See: Pukui, Mary Kawena, and Samuel H. Ebert, Hawaiian Dictionary, Revised and enlarged edition, University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu HI, 1986] The word hapa has moved into mainland English.

Used without qualification, hapa is often taken to mean "part White", and is short hand for hapa haole. The term can be used in conjunction with other Hawaiian racial and ethnic descriptors to specify a particular racial or ethnic mixture. Examples of this include:

* hapa haole (part Caucasian/white)
* hapa kanaka (part Hawaiian)
* hapa popolo (part African/black)
* hapa kepani (part Japanese); the term hapanese is also encountered
* hapa pilipino (part Filipino)
* hapa pake (part Chinese)
* hapa kolea (part Korean)
* hapa kamoa (part Samoan)
* hapa pukiki (part Portuguese/white)

Mary Pukui states that the original meaning of the word haole is "foreigner." Therefore, all non-Hawaiians are technically haole. In practical terms, however, the term is used as described here as a racial description with the specific exclusion of Portuguese. Portuguese are traditionally considered to be a separate "race" in Hawaii. [See: Pukui, Mary Kawena, and Samuel H. Ebert, Hawaiian Dictionary, Revised and enlarged edition University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu HI, 1986]

When are people going to wake up to the plight of we multi-racial individuals. I am offended at everything because I am European, American Indian, have some latino/hispanic/mexican or whatever the hell they call it these days and I am sure a little bit of everything so I take special attention to anything that might label me as anything be it white stereo typing, redneck jokes, someone saying "how" as a slight against my American Indian heritage. I even get offended at myself sometimes. We need to wake up and stop celebrqating diversity because it is exactly that acknowldegment that we are different that offends us so much! I mean for crying out loud; a person uses make-up to appear to have darker skin and it offends the dark skin people. Is it really that horrific to look at? I always thought darker skin was attractive but evidently it must be my european heritage that does not make me enraged over the idea of someone trying to look like me but its funny because all those beach goers looking for a tan are evidently some of the most racist among us yet we don't scream in horror over this. Why is that?
