Meg Ryan may be famous for her chic Sally Hershberger shag haircut, but the 48-year-old star has gone through many beauty transformations in her career.

Take a look back at the moments you may have missed--from bubblegum '80s makeup shades to long, blonde extensions:

Meg Ryan Beauty Evolution

    October 6, 1981
A young Meg Ryan attends the "Rich and Famous" New York City premiere. Her pink cheeks, lilac eyes, and tousled curls are perfectly on-trend for 1981.

    June 23, 1986
Ryan attends a movie screening in casual attire, next to no makeup, with her frosted hair tied up in a white headband. Her nose appears suspiciously thinner -- perhaps Ryan's first foray into plastic surgery?

    January 19, 1988
At the "Promised Land" premiere, Ryan went curly, showing off her layers. Again, she chooses a nearly bare face, even for an event filled with photographers.

    March 5, 1990
Ryan smiles at the "Joe vs. The Volcano" movie premiere, starting to dress the part of an actress. Her makeup is natural, with the same coral color on her eyes, lips, and cheeks.

Ryan's hair also reached new lengths in a warm reddish-blonde hue -- a sharp contrast to her previous cool color.

    March 8, 1993
Ryan attends the ShoWest Convention Hosted by NATO at Bally's Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her hair is chopped into a blunt bob, and her makeup is minimimal -- if present at all.

    March 1, 1996
A star (haircut) is born! Ryan's famous shaggy chop came courtesy of Sally Hershberger. As for where those suddenly-plump lips came from, we'll leave it up to Ryan to explain.

    April 8, 1998
At the "City of Angels" premiere in Los Angeles, Ryan went for a strawberry blonde shade, which matched her peachy skin.

    December 10, 1998
Ryan eyes the camera at the "You've Got Mail" New York premiere. Her subtly smoky liner helps bring out those baby blues, and we love this golden blonde-streaked shade.

    January 19, 2001
On the Set of "Kate & Leopold" in New York City, Ryan unveiled a longer, choppier cut.

    December 11, 2001
Ryan speaks at a press conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills wearing rose-colored blush and lipstick. Her cut has gradually grown out into longer layers.

One of my all-time favorites! Especially with Tom Hanks. Hey, Meg -- how come you never write, you never call, no emails, no texts? What's up with that? Ha! I should be so lucky! I like the softer look best. You've aged nicely. NO MORE plastic surgery! You'll be a great looking "older woman." Leave it alone!

Wow, Meg Ryan is beautiful ...adorable. It's great that she has done just minimal work on her face. (Wish she didn't do any. Hard for any of us to understand the pressures of that world.) Her and Michelle Pfeiffer seem to look a lot alike.

The editors in here seem to favor long, hard-to-maintain hair styles rather than short, simple cuts like Megs' "infamous" shag-why? Also, what's wrong with her using a minimum of makeup, as she does in many of these pics? Isn't the true beauty of a girl seen when she gets woke up at 5AM? Preferably with short hair!
