The country's largest department store and the Luxottica Group, parent company to Sunglass Hut, have entered into an agreement to open in-store locations at about 430 Macy's department stores in the U.S.
This deal makes Sunglass Hut the exclusive operator of Macy's sunglass departments. Macy's, in turn, will be the only department store in the U.S. to house Sunglass Hut shops.
There are currently 240 Sunglass Hut locations in Macy's. The new locations will be rolled out starting in Spring 2010 and be completely in place by spring 2011, bringing the total to 670 shops. There are more than 850 Macy's operated in 48 states.
"Sunglasses are an important fashion and functional accessory for our customers," said Ron Klein, Macy's chief stores officer, in a release. "Going forward with Sunglass Hut, we will be able to offer a wider choice of styles, supported by the high level of service associated with Macy's."
Luxottica's stable of brands includes Ray-Ban, Oakley, Vogue, Persol, Oliver Peoples, Arnette and REVO, while license brands include Bulgari, Burberry, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Donna Karan, Polo Ralph Lauren, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tiffany and Versace.
Interestingly, Macy's and Sunglass Hut have shared a corner of Herald Square, NYC for about 13 years -- an unrelated coincidence.
