Market research firm Mintel predicts that consumer confidence will return in 2010, reviving a struggling beauty industry that has responded to the finicky preferences of recessionistas by creating products that do more than just make you look good; they make you feel better too – in a multitude of ways.
Keep your eye out for these trends in 2010:
· "Mood Beauty" – Stressed? Slick on some lipgloss. Beauty companies are concocting makeup products that claim to offer soothing psychological benefits through their use of texture, temperature and ingredients that work with the body's neurotransmitters. You'll also see skincare that purports to induce sleep and relax you – lending a whole new meaning to the term "night cream."
· "Nu Natural" – While everyone went organic and "green" in '09, Mintel predicts that brands will now fuse organic ingredients with synthetic actives like peptides, collagen and ceramides to form a whole new class of product that performs even better than before.
· "Pro-Tech't" – Skincare companies love to cocoon consumers in layers of SPF and environmental protection – and they're about to step it up a notch. Influenced by tech terms like "firewall," brands are searching extreme climates like the Arctic and Sahara Desert for substances that go the extra mile. Look for ingredients like rhodiola rosea and superoxide dismutase, which both offer strong protective shields. Hey, if it's good enough for the polar ice cap, it should get you through a Minnesota winter.
· :Turbo Beauty 4G" – The trend of bringing treatments previously only available in doctor's offices to your home continues, with DIY sets increasingly containing higher pharmaceutical-grade actives. The catchy term for these products? "Masstige" – you can purchase it for an affordable price at the drugstore, but the makers position the product as luxury. Clever.
And beware your Facebook page; beauty brands have finally figured out that you spend quite a bit of time on there. Expect to see more mascara ads next time you check out what your friends are status updating about – especially if there's any mention of "beauty" in your profile.
