Getting Purse-onal - Seven Day Black Purse Project, The Results

12/10/2009 4:22PM by Pamela Pekerman

I went into the Black Purse Project optimistic that I could prove to myself and the fashion world how truly versatile one handbag can be if it's wearer has the passion to get creative.

Mission set. Go.

Day 1 – Tassel Time
I was in the mood for something sassy and simple – it was a hectic day and I didn't have time to fuss too much with dressing up my bag. A silver Jerome Dreyfuss tassel (given as a press gift) attached to a Clipa – a purse hanger that lives on your bag not in it – was just what the fashion G-ds ordered.
Cost: Clipa Savi Hanger $19.99; Cole Haan Genevieve Tassel $34.95

Day 2 – Razzle Dazzle
Rachel Zoe is always pushing the power of daytime glamour and sparkle, and I jumped on that bandwagon. Here, I draped a sequin skinny scarf from Coach over the handles and through the front-buckle loop of my Foley + Corinna black tote. The result is a loose, "H" shape which created that daytime glam look that's "bananas".
Cost: Coach scarf $98

Day 3 – Pretty in Pink
There's always an it color every season, again, I turn to a scarf for this task. I happen to be in a frilly, girly mood so I chose a soft pink, silk scarf. For early spring, consider getting a red scarf – scarlet ruled the spring 2010 runways.
Cost: Lulla Collection by Bindya Pink Flower Prink Scarf $30

Day 4 – Hardware Heaven
You knew it was coming – the rocker look. It's the big trend this season, and the easiest look to recreate. I'm sure you have some gold chains lying around your house. Take a bunch and play around until you create a configuration that looks good and stays security on your bag as you go about your daily tasks. I've combined a new chain with a vintage gold and faux pearl belt I received from my grandmother.
Cost: Sorrelli Marilyn Necklace $56

Day 5 – Bow-tiful

The holiday spirit took over me and I couldn't help putting a bow on my bag. I tried a few options with loose fabric (which you can see on Facebook), but this skinny belt did the trick. Accenting your bag with a bold color belt, a snake finish belt, a belt with hardware or any style you like and it will instantly change the look of your black bag.
Cost: Old Navy Metallic Bow Belt $14.50

Day 6 – Channeling Chanel
Multi purpose items, like necklaces, are a great way to alter the appearance of your handbag. I loved the hardware vibe from Day 4, but I was looking for something a bit softer for the weekend. The Coach necklace I was wearing the previous day was just what my bag needed.
Cost: Coach Multi Bead Strand Knotted Necklace $398 (To Order Call 866 262-2440)

Day 7 – Brooching Success
Flowers, animals, abstract shapes – pins come in any color and formation. Pick something that speaks to you and attach it to your bag. Do not pin it through leather – unless you want a hole there! Instead, look for a spot to to safely attach your broach. (FYI I actually had this pin on my wedding dress!)
Cost: Clara Kasavina Brooch (custom piece inquire via email sales@clarakasavina.com)

The above are just a few examples of what you can to do change the look of your bag. If you have other ideas please share them by leaving a comment.
