Models Quit Over McQueen Armadillo Heels

Killer heels, literally! Photo: Getty Images

There comes a time when a gal's just gotta put her foot down.

Or not, as it were.

So when Alexander McQueen called on his Spring/Summer 2010 runway models to slip on his death-defying, 10-inch-tall Armadillo shoes, catwalkers Abbey Lee Kershaw, Natasha Poly and Sasha Pivovarova quit the show in protest, Kershaw tells Frockwriter.

Who says models are dumb?

These boots aren't made for walking. Photo: Getty Images

Kershaw can't be blamed for erring on the side of caution. The model stumbled at Rodarte last September, had to sit out part of the Fall/Winter '09 shows due to a knee injury caused by another footwear-related near-miss, and even fainted thanks to a suffocating corset at McQueen's Spring/Summer '09 show last year, according to the source.

Yikes. We hope the poor thing has insurance.

But while Kershaw, Poly and Pivovarova may have 86'd McQueen's controversial kicks, style stars like Daphne Guinness and Lady Gaga have braved the monstrous heels sans bloodshed.

Heck, Guinness even marveled to Fashionista at the time that the straight-from-the-runway shoes were "quite light."

We'll just have to take her word for it. Those beasts give us nightmares.

Meanwhile, the Armadillo isn't the only shoe getting snubbed. Find out why Stuart Weitzman is ditching his million-dollar shoe.

Reminiscent of the late designer, the label's Pret-a-Porter catwalk show played on a fantasy world that was classic for McQueen. Models looked like snow bunnies dressed in white with coats lined with fur around the collar, bell-shaped skirts and belted waists. The collection then transformed in colour, shape and size - fuller, richer and covering models from head to toe.

This man must hate women, anyone that buys these shoes deserves to break their ankle. I say let the designer wearn them for a month first.

The funny thing is that if they start getting popular, at least half or more of you would actually go out and buy a pair just because it's what everyone else has, and its trendy.

So very glad to hear that three of the top catwalk models said "no way" to Mr. McQueen's goofy shoes. Mr.Mcqueen is talented but he just continues to push the envelope and too often, not in a good way
Sorry to be politically incorrect, but it sure seems this is how many homosexual male designers of women's fashion really see women: as silly girls who will wear anything these men design and who are so desperate to "belong" to some in crowd, they will be pushed and corralled into insane clothing and footwear. Time for women to reclaim common sense and for more women to design beautiful, wearable clothing and shoes.

These are the ugliest shoes I have ever seen. Definitely not good for your posture or made to fit the feet. Besides being extremely unattractive, they do not look safe to wear. Bravo to the models. I also wonder how much the shoes cost to design & make. Seems to me money, time & the materials could be better spent elsewhere.

I've said it for years, but this tears it: male fashion designers are acting out their covert hatred of women by creating "fashions" deliberately designed to be physical punishment.

Guys, relax. Fashion shows are mostly walking art-exhibits nowadays, and the same applies for these sculptures that double as shoes. Nobody in real life would be expected to wear either on the street.

As a former exotic dancer who's spent hours in nine-inch stilettos and could jog in sixes... bring on the tens! It's quite possible to do for some people... then again, so is stilt-walking?

The thing about shoes like these is that your feet and legs need to be properly conditioned to wearing them. Your quadriceps and calf muscles build up, your ankles and the tendons in your feet strengthen, and the skin on the ball of your foot thickens like any other callous. I spent almost ten years in heels for 8 to 10 hours at a time, and the only long-term effects I've had are that a year later the ball of my foot is still thickened and my feet and ankles are still stronger than they used to be.

I admit it's really all in the shoe, though. You need platform styles, quality padded inners, good arch suppport, and a snug fit that doesn't pinch your toes too snugly or push on the ends of them (tightness around the ball of the foot is ideal, as are open-toed styles). You also need to walk around flatfooted the rest of your day to stretch the tendons of your foot out conversely.

You can't tell from the outer design what the inside of these shoes are like, but obviously the curve of the foot would not match the wacky outer-curve design. I'm not sure if I like them or not; they look like lobster claws much more than anything to do with an armadillo. I'd love to see them in person just to unzip the things and peek around inside, though.
