Ear Candling - The Grimy Details On Ear Wax Removal

Wax on, wax off. Many are turning to ear candling to free their ears of the grimy buildup. Photo: Getty

Jessica Simpson recently shared her first ear candling experience via Twitter.

The pop star is seen in a video post with a burning candle stuck on top a Papa John's pizza box as her hairstylist and BFF Ken Paves laughs and sings Christmas tunes off-camera. Paves chuckles about Simpson's heated affair, but many medical experts may not find the practice as humorous.

Ear candling, also known as coning, is a procedure where a lit hollow candle is placed vertically into the outer ear canal to remove ear wax. The combination of heat and suction is believed to create a vacuum--extracting the waxy substance, toxins and other impurities. It usually requires lying on one side with the candle stuck into a cloth or plate to prevent hot wax from dripping down the sides. .

Clinical studies have shown that ear candling does not create a suction or pressure and is not an effective method of removing ear wax. Physicians caution those that practice to be aware of possible risks that include burns and injury to the ear canal and drum. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also released an alert in 2007 stressing the dangers of ear candling to one's health.

Have you ever tried ear candling? What do you think about the alternative practice? Leave a comment below.

EAR CANDLING IS THE SAFEST WAY TO CLEAN YOUR EARS BY FAR! WE HAVE DONE IT IN MY FAMILY FOR DECADES AND YOU DO NOT GET ANY HEAT IN YOUR EAR CANAL. ALL HEAT THAT YOU FEEL IS COMING FROM THE FIRE END. IT IS VERY EFFECTIVE IN CLEANING WAX OUT OF YOUR EARS..AS YOU CAN SEE BY CUTTING BOTTOM OF CANDLE WHEN YOU ARE DONE AND LOOKING INSIDE. EAR CANDLES ARE NOT APPROVED BY THE FDA[FEDERAL DEATH ADMINISTRATION] SO THEY [THE GOV] LIE AND CALL IT DANGEROUS. THEY WOULD RATHER YOU TORTURE YOURSELF BY FLUSHING EARS WITH WATER/SOLUTION[BIG NO NO]. OR LET A DOCTOR DIG IT OUT WHICH IS EVEN WORSE. AS LONG AS YOU COVER YOUR HAIR THERE IS NO DANGER OF BEING BURNED. BUT NEVER DO IT YOURSELF LIKE DUMB JESSICA,,SOMEONE IS SUPPOSED TO DO IT FOR YOU TO PREVENT HAIR/FACE BURN. COVER HAIR WITH CLOTH TO BE SAFE...

My husband has very hard earwax, and it is difficult to remove. Ear candling is a great, safe way to remove it. (He used to stick the rounded end of a bobby pin to scrape it out) He can hear better, and it clears his sinuses. I get terrible sinus headaches and ear candling helps me with those. You need to do your research, find someone who is trained and knows what they are doing. Do not do it yourself! You are dealing with fire, near your hair and face and it's not safe.
I disagree with the FDA warning. As long as you are trained and use proper equipment, you will be fine.

Based on the above comment, I'd say excessive ear-candling can be proven to lead to all-caps syndrome aggravated by reckless punctuation.

I AGREE WITH MIKEY EAR CANDLES ARE GREAT. I HAD A NEPHEW WHO HAD A VERY BAD EAR INFECTION AND THE DOCTOR COULD NOT EVEN SEE THE EAR DRUM OR CLEAN IT DUE TO THE PAIN IT WAS CAUSING HIM, SO WE USED EAR CANDLES TO REMOVE THE WAX FROM HIS EARS AND SENT HIM BACK TO THE DOCTOR THE NEXT DAY NOT ONLY WAS ALL THE WAX GONE BUT HIS EAR INFECTION WAS GETTING BETTER ALREADY. AS LONG AS YOU USE THEM CORRECTLY THEY ARE GREAT!

Candles....use for low light effect. Q-tips work quite well for ears...

Ear candling has been proven to be a total fraud and waste of time. There is no way it sucks anything out of your ear. People selling it try to tell you the goop inside came from your ear, but if you put an ear candle in a clean test tube, it will have the same goop, proving it is just soot and wax from the candle itself.

Ear candeling is great. My son had a really bad ear infection and I took him to the doctor. It was taking for ever for the medicine to work so my brother brought me those. My son felt instant relief. He had so much build up that it took 2 of those candles. He won't go to a doctor anymore, he uses those. Our family loves them.

If it works, and doesn't enrich the Pharma Industry, then the FDA will find fault, despite the fact that MDs kill 200,000+ per year in mistakes with drugs and mistakes in hospitals.

This was practised by the ancient Egyptians long ago. I tried a few times myself and it does take some material out of the ear canal. It did get warm but never even close to burning my ear though.

Ear Candling is dangerous. Tests have shown that it puts more crud in your ears, and pulls none out. The stuff inside the candle when you cut it open, is not ear wax, but the candle drippings itself. The suction required to physically PULL the wax out of your ear would bust your ear drum. Stupid fools.... its a gimmick.

What "tests"?....can you back that up or is it hearsay? Did "they" perform these tests? Back up your tests claim with actual facts. And don't trust the so called experts/media. Get first hand information for yourself. I have candled my ears for 15 years and have never had a problem. I use to have severe head colds 2-3 times a year with ear infections tossed in to the mix. My family doctor recommended it and I haven't had ear problems or sinus problem since. Sure I get the yearly cold, but so does everyone.

If you have ever looked at an ear candle, you can clearly tell the difference between the earwax and the powder from the inside of the candle. It's not rocket science. It leaves absolutely no residue in your ear.

EAR CANDLING DOES NOT CLEAN YOUR EARS. THE "WAX" YOU SEE WHEN YOU CUT THE CANDLE OPEN IS THE "WAX" THE CANDLE IS MADE FROM, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE WAX EVAPORATES INTO MID AIR? IT HAS TO GO SOMEWHERE, AND THAT SOMEWHERE IS INSIDE THE CANDLE ITSELF. THE HEAT CAN BE SOOTHING FOR EAR ACHES AND INFECTIONS, BUT THATS AS FAR AS THE BENEFITS GO, EAR CANDLING WAS FOUND TO NOT CLEAN YOUR EARS OUT 2 AND A HALF YEARS AGO, THIS IS NOT NEW.

Always seeking the truth, 12-30-2009, 8:31PM

Always seeking the truth

I am always so suprised at people and their ignorant baggage they carry around. School teaches us the scientific method, and truth will never be revealed to those who do not seek it. Q- tips, bobby pins or any other object inserted into the ear canal is both inherently detrimental to the sensitivity of an inner ear. On the other hand, ear candling is based on the principles of a flame creating a vacuum, taking all the earwax out of ear. These posts that claim that the "earwax" is just the candle residue that has no where to go would be suprised to understand that earcandling can also be done by rolling up cardboard or other hard paper into a conical shape, inserting the smaller aperture into the ear and lighting the other end, making sure to have a partner remove homemade aparatus before the flame gets to close to ear. Personally, I was raised on bobby pins and Q-tips and was a little hesitate about the whole candle idea. The thought of using the physical principals of fire sounded a little medieval to me, and frankly archaic, but keeping an open mind I approached the idea cautiously and am now proud to confess that this ear candling works! Lastly, be advised the FDA is not completely on your side. Consider the salmonella debacle that resulted in deaths, the fact that many FDA directors are now working for the same pharma companies they ostracized, and that the FDA is working to eliminate all forms of natural, medicinal medicines because they do not generate the profits that synthetic medicines do. All in all, be open to alternative forms of healing, but be knowledgeable and self-aware, as with traditional forms of healing there will always be medicines or medical practices that claim to be paneceas for ailments that yield further pain and ignorance.
