Brigitte Magazine Replaces Models With 'Ordinary' Women
Real women are the new cover girls.
Step aside, Kate. Make some room, Gisele. Hit the road, Agyness.
German fashion magazine Brigitte has put its money where its mouth is, giving professional models the heave-ho and using "ordinary" women in its fashion features, the Independent reports.
The magazine reportedly announced last fall that it would be abandoning skinny models in favor of more realistic women following reader complaints that they were sick of seeing "protruding bones."
As we previously reported, skinny proponent Karl Lagerfeld then took the opportunity to decry the ban, saying that "nobody wants to see a round woman." Such a charmer, Herr Karl.
The just-released January issue is the magazine's first to feature solely non-models, though professionals do star in the issue's advertisements, according to the paper.
(Eh, nobody's perfect.)
The new batch of "models" includes a teacher, a hotel receptionist and a 45-year-old artist, some of whom sport wrinkles and curves, the source reports.
"It is not a question of them suddenly becoming models," Brigitte's editor Andreas Lebert told the paper.
"They simply step out of their normal lives for a moment and present fashion for us as personalities."
And there's plenty more where that came from. The magazine reportedly claims that 20,000 readers have applied to become models in future issues.
We're thrilled to see a magazine taking a daring stand -- provided they do continue to offer a mix of body types. But what do you think? Should modeling be left to the pros, or do you find it refreshing to see a regular woman in a fashion magazine? Leave a comment!
Brigitte's video (seen below) outlines its model-free initiative.
