As part of a regular review of store performance, Macy's will be closing five locations.

The following Macy's outposts will be shuttered: Downtown Boise, ID; Summit Place Mall, Waterford, MI; Northwest Plaza, St. Ann, MO; Downtown Missoula, MT; and Burlington Center Mall, Burlington, NJ.

"We are committed to maintaining a healthy portfolio of stores, which requires us to make the difficult decision to close some stores that no longer meet our performance requirements," Terry J. Lundgren, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Macy's, Inc., said in a release.

"The decision to close stores is difficult, and often occurs when the market changes, new competing shopping centers are opened nearby to existing older ones, or when customers change shopping habits. In the store closing process, we are committed to treating affected associates with respect and openness," Lundgren said.

These closures will affect more than 300 employees who may be offered positions in nearby stores or receive severance benefits and outplacement assistance.

In 2009, Macy's opened five new Macy's stores. In 2010, Macy's, Inc. currently expects to open new Bloomingdale's stores in Santa Monica, CA, and Dubai (its first international location).

For shoppers, however, this gray cloud of bad news does have a silver lining. Final clearance sales at these stores will start on Sunday, Jan. 10 and run for a whopping two months.

Macy's laid me off, along with 7,000 other employees, last year as part of a corporate restructuring. Please do no shop there!!

I was so dissapointed when Macy's took over Marshall Fielf's and trampled a legendary piece of Chicago history, but I remained a customer. Then, 2 days before Thanksgiving they slashed my credit line by $8,000 eventhough I had never been late or missed a single payment in my 6 years as a card holder!
I paid the card off and closed the account imediately. It'll be a cold day in Hell before I ever walk through the door of a Macy's again. I hope they go belly-up... the sooner the better!

Never liked Hecht Co. Don't like Macy's. Have not bought one item from Macy's in the 56 years I've been on this planet. My 20 y.o. daughter and I walked through Macy's at our mall in Hagerstown, MD, looking for Christmas gifts. Neither of us saw anything of interest (and, unlike me, my daughter will buy anything). I still cannot understand why Hecht Co./Macy's survived and Woodward & Lothrop closed. I could always find exactly what I wanted at W&L. Enough already with the polyester clothing made in China! PEOPLE: STOP BUYING THE MEDIOCRE, OVER-PRICED, MADE-IN-CHINA CRAP. That's the only way we can effectuate change.

You all want to know why everything is made in China? Because YOU want everything at Walmart prices! If it was made in the USA YOU would not buy it because it would cost 3-5 times the price. Unfortunately even Macy's has to compete with lower end retailers to keep customers in the door. I had hoped that with the recession we as a country would return to demanding "Made in America" like we did the early 80's. It is sad that our once proud nation's citizens are more concerned with how cheap they can get things. Think about it when you are worried about the unemployment rate.

A Macy's employee was caught on a security camera picking up a gift card off the floor that someone had lost. She kept it and they fired her!!!

Another employee found money at a display that someone had lost. Security cameras caught her too and she got fired!! Nice treatment of both employees. They weren't even given a warning but immediately fired even though neither of them had stolen anything!! Both employees were good workers too.

The stuff in Macy"s is nice, but alot of it is way over priced. Better off at Kohls or Target.

Well they follow people who look suspicous and the type of have robbed in the past. You want them to follow white old ladies and little kids? I just hate their pics of nudity and gays. That shows you can't trust them. I"m glad they are closeing there unless they shape up.

keeping a lost gift or money is stealing.. They should be fired. If they steal from there they'll steal from the store. "Those who are dishonest in little things will be dishonest in big things."

In Michigan, it was Hudson's (very very nice), then it turned to Marshall Fields (fairly good) then it went to hell when Macy's took it over. What were they thinking? They should have kept the med-high end clothing lines their predecessors had, instead of catering to teens (or someone?) with cheaply made awful clothing. I used to love buying my suits and special occasion gowns from Hudson's. I miss Hudson's a lot. Now, we have either low end or high end (Nordstrom's). No in between good quality clothing.

The Michigan store has been doing bad for well over a decade. DaytonHudson did not close it and the string of takeovers of the Hudsons/Fields chain delayed this closure (at least 5 years). Summit Place Mall has been in a death spiral since Oakland County allowed another new mall to open 3 miles north in 1998 that essentially lead to 80% vacancy at Summit Place, but that mall is closer to new home construction. Summit Place Mall, while its sits just north of one of the wealthiest areas in the US, it is surrounded by lower income black and white neighborhoods in Pontiac and Waterford. What I really hate to see is stand alone downtown stores close, this is something UNIQUE that Macy's should be pushing to save.

People need to wake up and demand American made products. USA labels on what they buy are important to all our jobs. I agree with the above comments. When you look and the designer labels on most of the expensive clothing and bedding at Macy's its all Chinese.
