France to Fine Women Who Wear Burqas in Public

The French government is taking aggressive action against burqas -- the veils worn by Islamic women to obscure their faces.

In a decision destined to cause an uproar, the president of France's leading UMP Party has announced that he is drafting legislation that would fine those who wear a burqa on the street or in a public place, the Daily Mail reports.

Jean-Francois Copé, who is reportedly ready to file the draft in the National Assembly, suggested that fines be as much as 750 euros (approximately $1,073).

Copé said that the fines would also apply to anyone who covers their face in public as well as men who force their female family members to wear a burqa, according to the paper.

"Permanently masking one's face in public spaces is not an expression of individual liberty," Copé has reportedly said in the past.

"It's a negation of oneself, a negation of others, a negation of social life."

The move is just the last effort by the French government to ban the controversial veil. President Nicolas Sarkozy has previously stated that burqas were "not welcome" as they stand as a "sign of subservience and debasement that imprison women," the source adds.

As we previously covered, French immigration minister Eric Besson has also called for a burqa ban, deeming them "unacceptable."

Meanwhile, a parliamentary commission investigating the veil is reportedly due to publish its findings next month.

Though France is home to more than five million Muslims, cites the paper, a recent police report stated that only about 400 women there wore veils because the majority of the country's Muslim immigrants come from North Africa, where veils are less prominent.

Still, it remains to be seen what effect a proposed heavy fine will have on the country's Muslim community -- and whether such a fine violates France's rights to religious freedom.

Do you think France should fine those who wear burqas? How would you feel about a similar law being passed in the United States? Leave a comment!

Meanwhile, read about Iran's crackdown on mannequins who don't wear traditional Islamic dress.

Agreed that a man forcing his female family members to wear a burqa is a violation of women's rights. But for the government to force a woman to expose her body in public by not allowing her to cover herself with a burqa is is also a violation of her rights. By the way, is wearing other religious garb (Jewish skull cap, nun's habits, a cross on a necklace) also a fineable offense, or is Frace singling out the Muslim faith?

Agreed with above. I cannot stand burqas and love that France is taking such a stance and speaking out against it for women's rights, BUT you cannot take away personal liberties at the same time. It doesn't make any sense. An awareness campaign is one thing, fining someone for what they wear is definitely not the correct solution.

Shaheen, wearing a cross or skull cap are a few light years away from forcing women to cover themselves from head to toe.

In addition, there are security concerns. Try walking into your local bank with a ski mask covering your head, walk up to the teller and announce you want to make a withdrawal. Observe the reactions.

It's time to reform Islam.

Have you ever noticed that whenever Islamic fascists protest a movie, a cartoon, a story in the press or a social event in a given country which attempts to illuminate how the Qur’an advocates, encourages and blesses violence and murder of non-believers or transgressors against Islam, the radical Muslim resorts to violence, death threats, murder, bombings, beheadings, etc., in the name of Islam as a way of protest? Whenever Muslims do this they are reinforcing the very point of the story, cartoon, movie, etc. And isn’t it “funny” how we have to apply the term “Moderate Muslim” to define the rest of the Muslims? The term shouldn’t have to exist in the first place.

When Muslims complain about the West making “sweeping insinuations that the entire Islamic community and every Muslim is at war with the rest of the world”, Muslims demonstrate an inability to look inward into their own community and to question their religious leaders who conjure up whole armies of martyrs using the teachings from the Qur’an, preaching death to the West and non-believers in general.

When will Islam's leadership rise to reclaim their religion from the violent pigs who use Muhammad's words to foment violence? When will its leadership strike the hateful versus from the Qur'an?

Because of Muslims who use Muhammad's words to justify killing innocents - and mostly other Muslims I might add - It supports what the West is thinking; that Muslims still believe The Crusades never ended.

It is up to the so-called "moderate'' Muslim to challenge their leadership to abandon these teachings which debase women, hurl insults and threaten the lives of non-believers, teaches revenge, advocates the punishment of those who will not convert to Islam, to kill those who turn away from Islam to adopt other religions, teach that Jews are monkeys and Christians are pigs.

These teachings have no business in any religion.

It isn’t the West's fault when they turn to the Qur’an and read passages like the ones below.
.
——————————–
Sura 3.85:

And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.

Lesson : No other religion other than Islam is to be tolerated

——————————–
Sura 5.51:

O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

Lesson : Do not befriend Jews, Christians…

——————————–
Sura 3 – Al-E-Imran (MADINA) : Verse 140

If a wound (and killing) has touched you, be sure a similar wound (and killing) has touched the others. And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allâh may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allâh likes not the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong¬doers).

Lesson : teaches revenge

——————————–
Sura 8.12:

When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

Lesson : Kill disbelievers

——————————–
Sura 9.123:

O you who believe! fight those of the unbelievers who are near to you and let them find in you hardness; and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil).

Lesson : Fight against disbelievers; Regard them as evil and unworthy of kindness.

Very Nice.

If the Muslim community is tired of being “misunderstood” they need to stand up and demand better leadership which doesn’t turn the Qur’an against them with its vile and hate-filled crap.

Any religion which espouses or advocates the dismemberment or beheading or killing as punishment or advocates honor killings is basically, fundamentally flawed to its very core.

The stories we read in the press about Islam's violence and hate are messages which come from your own people who have stolen your religion from you and turn it against you. Do not whine to the West. We are taught this by your leadership while you stand idle in your shoes.

Either get involved and take your religion back and prove to the world it is as peaceful as you claim or simply sit down and shut up for you have lost your moral ground to voice a single complaint.

@ben

>Shaheen, wearing a cross or skull cap are a few light years away from forcing women to >cover themselves from head to toe.

And yet close enough for enforcing on somone's liberty. Perhaps you failed to grasp the point being addressed. If a woman willingly wishes to dress like a goth, who are you to intervene? A muslim woman who chooses to do that veil is in the same category.

>In addition, there are security concerns. Try walking into your local bank with a ski mask >covering your head, walk up to the teller and announce you want to make a withdrawal. >Observe the reactions.

Its funny that you ask a muslim that question. Its not the muslim's fault you will get that reaction from the teller in France.. ask that french bank teller about her/his paranoia. This doesnt seem to be a problem in so many other countries. Have personally witnessed it on three continents!

>It's time to reform Islam.

Its even more funny when non muslim say that its time to reform. How about france reforms its own policies to provide proper personal rights for everyone without hypocrisy!

>Have you ever noticed that whenever Islamic fascists protest a movie, a cartoon, a story in >the press or a social event in a given country which attempts to illuminate how the Qur’an
>....to define the rest of the Muslims? The term shouldn’t have to exist in the first place.

Yeah I have noticed that.. Its very fishy.. its almost as if the emotions are instigated by some external factor, OH WAIT!! they are!!! But then, sometimes it almost feels as if its being played out as such in media ... Yep... thats happening too.. We can blame those few thousand muslims... but NO we cant blame those corporate thugs and fanatical policies in the western countries.. Now thats wierd..

>When Muslims complain about the West making “sweeping insinuations that the entire >Islamic community and every Muslim is at war with the rest of the world”, Muslims >demonstrate an inability to look inward into their own community and to question their >religious leaders who conjure up whole armies of martyrs using the teachings from the >Qur’an, preaching death to the West and non-believers in general.

And yet the entire western governmental lobby can carry out all those attrocities in the name of eradicating fundamentalism without being insinuated for anything right? No, No they deserve multicoloured ribbons for their doings!

>When will Islam's leadership rise to reclaim their religion from the violent pigs who use >Muhammad's words to foment violence? When will its leadership strike the hateful versus >from the Qur'an?

Soon, Soon.. But since you are so worried.. why dont you start fresh by providing those muslims women in France who are being torn away from their religious freedom. Those who chose their religious practice over your superficial "rights"...those whom you claim to rescue!

>Because of Muslims who use Muhammad's words to justify killing innocents - and mostly >other Muslims I might add - ....lievers; Regard them as evil and unworthy of kindness.

But what does ALL of your rant has to do with women being deprived from choosing what they themselves wish to wear?

>If the Muslim community is tired of being “misunderstood” they need to stand up and >demand better leadership which doesn’t turn the Qur’an against them with its vile and >hate-filled crap.

Atleast after posting all those out of context, distorted references, atleast you man up to say that they are "misunderstood". Anyhow, lets leave that for those "moderate" muslims to do another day..right now why not discuss dilemma at hand. depriving someone of his right! You seem to have tackled everything BUT that!

>Any religion which espouses or advocates the dismemberment or beheading or killing as >punishment or advocates honor killings is basically, fundamentally flawed to its very core.

Why do you put the restriction of "religion".. Any country as well right... oops there goes down US, UK, most of European and all countries aiding in mass civilian killings around the globe! and if not, shall we shame the hypocrite!

>The stories we read in the press

You must be a 12 year old girl, if you rely on press for your education.

>Either get involved and take your religion back and prove to the world it is as peaceful as
>you claim or simply sit down and shut up for you have lost your moral ground to voice a >single complaint.

But what about the rights being deprived to a single entity of a person here!!! Was this you early friday rant dosage or you really wanted to speak fair? How about actually answering the question. Would you find a nun who wears the cross on her neck! and keeps a rosarie? and Would you find her for her garb!? How about find the cardinal for his outfit or the pope for his? If you dont do so for them, why the muslim lady who choses to do so out of her own will!!!
