Angelina Jolie can be a tough act to follow... but one gal's up for the challenge.

St. John, the fashion knitwear giant, has announced that it has followed up former spokesmodel Jolie with crimson-haired catwalker Karen Elson, last seen taking a nose dive off the stage at the British Fashion Awards, WWD reports.

Though St. John CEO Glenn McMahon told the source that Jolie -- who reportedly had issues with the dresses she was given to wear to red carpet events -- "overshadowed the brand," prompting several outlets to report that Jolie had been dumped in favor of Elson.

The real story? St. John's PR told StyleList that its relationship with the actress ended amicably in 2008 after her three-year contract was up.

"Her [Jolie's] relationship with St John continues to be very positive," St. John reiterated to us in a statement.

"We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette," McMahon told WWD, referring to Jolie and longtime model Kelly Gray.

"We needed to show a modern point of view of St. John. We have evolved."

That evolution translates to Greg Kadel's bold image of Elson and her scarlet tresses, a dramatic contrast to the classic black and white shots that featured Jolie.

"The ads offer a fresh take from the images of the past and are clean, modern and editorial in feel," according to a company statement.

"The combination of Creative Director George Sharp's desire to express a modern take on the classic St. John brand, the evocative look of Karen Elson combined with Greg Kadel's keen eye resulted in a beautiful campaign that is directional, yet, attainable."

The new campaign will reportedly be featured in the February issues of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair.

But fear not, Jolie fans. You'll get your Angelina fix the next time, oh, Shiloh eats a tater tot or the twins get their diapers changed.

Um, this is old news. I recalled reading the press release from St John that Angelina's contract was over, and that it had been a great success with revenue increasing 25% the next year after she started the campaign - thanking her for a great run. So my guess is, if St John, two years later, and a couple of ad campaigns in the interim POST-Angelina Jolie (one with Liya Kebede the Ethiopian model) is STILL harkening back and name dropping Angelina Jolie, to launch yet another campaign....well, it's pretty obvious they miss her asss something terrible. Why go back two previous ad campaigns and try to fool the media into thinking you dropped Jolie yesterday, when you had already issued a press release back in 2008 (see below)...sounds fairly deceptive, also fairly stupid considering she made the company big bucks:

It looks like they're trying to hop on the 'Twilight' background with the undead white as a corpse thing happening in this new campaign. I think this will only work if St John's anticipates 13 yr old's in love with Edward Cullen buying their $8000 suits. Good luck with this. Oh, and I too remember reading this about Angie and St John a whole two years ago. Why are posts and blurbs suggesting this is some recent development. They have had two other campaigns since Angelina. They're just dropping her name to get attention. If they have to do that in the first place, make that a strategic marketing movie: that tells you ALL you need to know about who left who.

Angelina was a brilliant and super cool choice for the ads, and at that time it seemed that tired old,same old St John was finally going to wake up and become a cool brand again.We visited the stores and the product looked great too.Magazine editor friends were talking about the 'buzz',and what was going on with new designers behind the label.

What a disappointment that they've moved away from the perfect choice of model and even worse,stopped making the cool clothes that they were producing then.
I agree,by talking as if the last campaigns didn't exist,St John show that they miss Angie and the attention/cool factor that she brought to the company,REAL bad.

The phrase "We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette," is WAAAY insulting to Angie.Cleanse the company image after her ? - - - - Hey, it was NEVER better.They'd be lucky to be that cool again.I hope they apologize to her and bring in some cool designers.The clothes cost big bucks and look cheap and old in the stores.These ads look SO moderate and just like all those other tired department store brands who try to put a gloss on bad product and design.

Excellent move St. John. Karen Elson is fresh, beautiful, and those blazing red tresses really light up the picture. Pure elegance and beauty at it's finest! Keep up the great work!
