New Jersey, of course! The land where big hair and big bosoms bring big ratings. So it shouldn't come as a total shocker that the Oxygen network will soon be introducing "Jersey Couture" -- the latest entry in the haute reality fashion scene that is the Garden State.
The series will be based at Diane & Company, a glitzy dress shop based in Freehold, N.J. The 32-year-old boutique is described as the "premier glamor stop in New Jersey." The proprietor/stars are described as having a "no nonsense attitude" and a "flair for style." It's there that we will be introduced to the Scali family.
This depiction makes us a tad nervous.
We've learned from "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" that a "no nonsense attitude" means women behaving badly while wearing low-cut dresses. MTV's "Jersey Shore" has demonstrated that a "flair for style" translates to a '60s-inspired pouf and painfully tight clothes worn by a pint-sized trash talker.
Let's hope the ladies of "Jersey Couture" can elevate the state's fashion reputation and class up the landscape a bit.
Diane & Company specializes in evening wear including bridal, prom and special occasion dresses, hosts designer trunk shows and even offers a destination primping service for customers.
We'll have to wait and see if "the shore" can really go couture. The form-fitting pink mermaid dress featured on the home page of the retailer's Website is not raising our expectations.
A spokesman for Oxygen tells StyleList the series is "in development" and there is no air date yet. Stay tuned...
