Michelle Obama trades in her ladylike 'do for a modern bob. Photos: Associated Press | AFP/Getty Images

Michelle Obama is letting it all hang out -- her hair, that is!

The First Lady showed off a voluminous new 'do at a funeral mass for Jean Biden, mother of Vice President Joe Biden, on January 12, 2010 in Wilmington, Delaware. She had been wearing her hair styled in ladylike chignons and tight ponytails for the past two months -- keeping her shoulder-length locks tucked away.

What do you think of the First Lady's full bob?

To mimic, Mrs. O's heightened crown, celebrity hairstylist Danielle Caputo suggests holding the curling iron at the base of each curl, and then feeding hair into the curl. "This approach will build more volume than the reverse (and more common) method of curling the hair from ends to roots."

Click through the gallery for all of Danielle's step-by-step instructions to volumize your hair, and visit our Hair Basics section for more easy hair how-tos.

Hair Basics: Quick Tips to Add Volume
Revive a flat hair style in mere minutes!

Hair Basics: Quick Tips to Add Volume

Could your strands use a little extra oomph? Celebrity hairstylist Danielle Caputo shares and easy trick for adding quick volume to your hair. The process looks a little complicated, but once you've got it down you'll have big, lush locks, in minutes.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Gather the top section of your hair like you're creating a Mohawk, then fasten it with a hair clip.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Gather the rest of the hair back into a ponytail. This will divide the hair up into easy sections for you to style.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Now that the rest of the hair is pulled back, you can unclip the top section to start adding volume. You will ultimately be dividing the top section into three smaller sections, each of which you will spray first with hairspray, comb through with a fine tooth comb, curl back with a wide barrel curling iron, and clip them into place to hold the curl.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

TIP: Hold the curling iron at the base of each curl, and then feed hair into the curl. This method will build more volume than the reverse (and more common) method of curling the hair from ends to roots.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

This is what your head should look like when all three top sections have been curled and clipped. Hello, faux-hawk!

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Section the ponytail into two (if your hair is thick, do three sections). Spray each section, comb it through, and then curl using the same method described previously.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Help the curls set by cooling them with air from your hair dryer, using the cool setting (or button) to help accelerate the process. Caputo recommends blowing the air in the direction of the curls. "Doing it against the the curls will cause the hair to frizz up," she says.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Once the curls have cooled off, take pins and ponytail out, then flip hair over and muss it up at the roots with your fingers.

    Sebastian Mlynarski for AOL

Spray with a little finishing spray, and there you have it, shiny, voluminous waves.

She obviously hasn't learned a thing! Michelle Obama is the most classless first lady we've had in recent memory unless you want to include the Hilly Billy AKA Hillary Clintoon. Her style of dress is awful, she dresses like a HO not a first lady. I'd take Barbara Bush any day over Obama.

It really bothers me that this country has the least amount of respect for the beauty for women of color/ethnicity, and not not just black women. (and we like to say that racism is dead). There IS beauty beyond the size 2, busty blonde with lipo and extensions! Sure, we'll shut our mouths at the sights of Halle Berry or Rihanna whom we know are gorgeous, but when it comes curvy women, full-figured women like M.O. or Beyonce, we can't wait to rip insults into them- as if we are an authority on beauty. Yes, your opinion is your right, but I'm sure the majority of you would flip at being told you were ugly or unattractive by another female- clearly not the comapssion you have for this woman! We should celebrate our differences of shape, size and color, and be honest with ourselves; not one of us is worthy enough to be on the runway, and have no right to speak of such distaste about another.

We need to just go ahead and admit it ... Michelle O looks great in whatever she wears and how ever she does her hair. She's not a classic beauty (a la Grace Kelly) but she's striking in her looks and in her bearings. I like the new do and I liked the headbands, the pony tails ... heck, I even thought she looked cute in those leopard ears at Hallowe'en! I think little Sasha is going to be the spitting image of her mother, while Malia looks like President O -- only prettier and more feminine. And Malia is going to be taller than both her mother and her dad.

My politics are generally the polar opposites of Obama's, but I'm not at all shy about saying what a beautiful family they are!

Thank you Nonnie, I agree also. She may not be GORGEOUS, but she is a pretty lady who is all the talk when she makes appearances. All the fashion EXPERTS (not the commenters on this blog) praise her style. If we were honest with ourselves, we would love to own half of what she wears! Sure she has a "fashion faux pas" here and there, but overall very well-done and put together.

I think this is a FABULOUS look for her.
Now if she can just get rid of the scowl and do something with that terrible protruding lower jaw & crooked teeth AND the palate expander she never had for her upper teeth aka overbite!

In case you didn't read (or comprehend) the article, this picture was taken at a funeral! It's not a scowl ... it's the proper, sad expression. I can't believe I'm defending MO! I can't stand what her husband is doing to our country, I'm furious about the stealth care bill and all the spending. But this article is about this woman's hair!

It always amazing to me that those who criticize others never see their own faults. Unless you are a perfect person, you should not judge others for their lack of perfection.

Its very obvious that you are judging others. Perhaps you should take your own advice. Michelle Obama does not have a feminine bone in her body. The new wig looks fine on her. If she does not smile, the teeth issue will not be an issue. She is what she is - a 6 foot plus amazon. She can't help it.

I am astonished at how ugly people can be! None of us are perfect. Michelle Obama is a pretty woman, has pretty features, great skin, white teeth and hair that does so many different styles well. I am white.......I wish I had some of her attributes!
