Q: I'm soon to be 47 and would like to change my wardrobe. What are some key pieces to own that are casual but can be dressed up for the evening? I'm 5'1", like tailored clothes, but don't like pumps or extreme high heels. I need help so I can start dating again.

A: Congrats on getting back into the dating game! Building out your wardrobe is all about focusing on the basics.

To help explain the best items to choose, I've enlisted stylist Meg Goldman who worked with us on both the Rockettes and Winter Coats shoots. Here's what she has to say:

"You probably already own three of the most basic and versatile wardrobe pieces. Consider them the keys to a closet full of options: a great fitting pair of jeans for your body, a slim skirt either in black or denim, and a cardigan sweater in lightweight wool or a cotton blend.

For maximum wear, make sure your jeans are in a dark rinse without any extra embellishment (no rips, shredding, fading, zippers, studs etc). Instead concentrate on finding the most flattering shape for your figure. No matter your size or weight go for the slimmest, most fitted cut you feel comfortable in. Another plus with a slim or skinny jean, you have many more options of shoes to wear them with: anything from a tall boot to tuck your jeans into, a strappy not so high heel, or a flat ballet slipper.

A straight fitting, knee-length denim skirt or black straight skirt can be worn with just about any blouse or sweater for day and switched for a sexier silk or lace top for evening.

For day pair that skirt with an opaque tight, for evening change to some patterned hosiery.

Throw on a light-weight cardigan with either top option and the look will change again. Make sure you choose a cardigan that skims the body. In general, baggy loose fitting tops look less polished and tend to loose their shape the more you wear them, resulting in an unflattering look.

To dress up your cardigan for evening, try layering on some chain necklaces of different lengths. If you own pearls - either real or fake - you can mix those in too. Another option is to belt it around the waist. A thin chain or patent leather cincher adds some sparkle for evening but can also be worn for day with your jeans and a T-shirt."
