Are Your Favorite Beauty Products Dangerous? A 15-Year-Old Blows the Whistle

After reporting on 15 year-old Ava Anderson's 100% non-toxic skincare line, we got to know the high school sophomore better with some girl talk about her favorite topic: safe-for-you beauty products.

The inquisitive Anderson watched a news report over two years ago that focused on the toxicity of beauty products on the market, and subsequently found through the CosmeticsDatabase.com that virtually all the products in her home, Mom's makeup bag and the beauty shopping aisle were chock full of potentially harmful ingredients. With no other apparent options, Anderson's very own 100% non-toxic skincare line was born.

"People don't realize that most beauty products are safer to swallow than to put on your skin. At least when you ingest something, your liver detoxifies the ingredients. But when it's on your skin, some of it is directly absorbed into your blood stream. Why do you think the patch works so well that doctors recommend it for people who want to quit smoking? You put it on your skin and it gets absorbed into your body," says Anderson.

And a jaw-dropping statistic: The United States has 9 ingredients banned by the FDA for use in beauty products, while Europe currently has a whopping 1300 substances banned – which include any additives known or suspected to cause cancer.

"A lot of people think they're safe using products labeled as natural or organic. But terms like that are just chosen by the company with no regulation. If I make a product, I can put anything in there and put the word 'natural' on the label," says Anderson.

One preservative ingredient in particular – methylparaben – is pointed out by Anderson as a very common ingredient found in countless cosmetic products, despite its spotty history associated with cancer. When Anderson asked this reporter to pull out a favorite makeup product so she could analyze it on CosmeticDatabase.com, the beloved blotting powder I keep at my finger tips immediately checked positive for this troublesome ingredient – in addition to a host of others.

Check out the chemicals in your makeup and skincare on Cosmeticsdatabase.com.

So why do companies stack so many of these questionable fillers in their products? Anderson attributes it to the competitive race for a cheaper product that performs a certain way, like creating shimmer pieces that set in eyeshadow and products with long shelf lives.

"The average woman applies 200 to 300 chemicals to her face and body before she goes downstairs for breakfast," says Anderson. "And 'fragrance' is a word you often see in ingredient lists that the FDA allows companies to hide up to 500 chemicals under. People who are wondering why they got an allergic reaction to a product that doesn't have anything bad listed are probably reacting to something hidden in that 'fragrance' word," adds Anderson.

With beauty junkies slowly becoming more aware of the implications of dangerous ingredients, companies are finding increasingly clever ways to conceal what they're putting in products. "You'll see ingredients listed on the plastic shrink wrap of a lipstick that you rip through before you even use it the first time. Another trick is to highlight natural-sounding ingredients on a package to make it look safe, but then the product is filled with toxic ingredients," says Anderson.

But what's a confused consumer to do?

"Searching CosmeticsDatabase.com was key to my understanding of everything that was in the beauty products I was using. They grade every ingredient from a toxicity level of 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest. All of the ingredients in my products rank a 0," says Anderson.

We hear that next on tap for the enterprising blonde are men's, body, baby and cosmetic lines.

"My Dad is always stealing stuff to use for himself. I know my packaging is girly and pink right now, but we're working on a more guy-friendly look too," says Anderson.

She sounds like a woman on a mission.

I can't believe that these companies that say they care about us would put toxins in the products we use on ourselves and our children. Thank you for blowing the whistle! I am going to go and enter everything I use in the database right now!!!!!!!!!!!

Great article! I'm so glad this topic is finally getting more exposure. It is criminal that manufacturers are lawfully allowed to limit the publics knowledge of the harmful ingredients they use in our personal care products. Be informed people!

OMG. I just went to the cosmetics data base to check out the well known baby products I used on my children and they are terribly toxic! I assumed they were the best I could buy. We are being duped by the skin care and cosmetics companies! After reading this article, I realize that I probably use 15 products before I head down to breakfast. I am switching and trying your products Ava. Thank you for sharing information that I never even thought about!!!!!

I'm so thankful for the teens, like Ava, that feel so passionately about real concerns and take the initiative to DO SOMETHING about it! Like not many adults can, teens are able to use their energy to motivate people into a movement that changes the world.

Ava's products are amazing. I have large pores with black heads and it has helped my skin so much since I started using the products. I love that is "0" toxin's. I found Ava's products when I was searching for products for my son that is on a Gluten and Casein free diet for his Asperger's. I was doing research online and just happen to come across the Ava Anderson Non-Toxic products. I feel in love with Ava's story and how all the products are "0" Toxins. I became a consultant to share this amazing company with everyone I meet.

Ava you are amazing. My daughters and I have never heard about this before. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to you and AOL for sharing your story. We looked up everything we use on the database. UGH. UGH. UGH. I have been buying organic for years, while I unknowingly smeared them with toxic products that led me to believe they are natural. No more. And my sons AXE spray is horrendous. Mom's you need to look at Ava's webite and get informed now.

Ava disclosed to us terribly lies and cover-up the industries don't want us to know.

When my children were born I was careful with their vaccines, nonstick pans, plastic containers, microwave etc. I work out and I feel my family and I have been sabotaging our lifestyle. We all make conscientious choices about poisonious things in our lives BUT WHO KNEW the vastness of this skin issue.

Cancer runs amuck in our society and we need not take too long contemplating the connection of dots of lotions, shampoos, shaving creams etc. that we lather up DAILY and we are putting these harmful loaded products on us daily! I feel like this is a campaign with the message, I love the products and so do much children! Thank you.

Thank you Ava for providing safe alternatives. I feel so slighted by the government protective agencies that are extremely aloof when it comes to consumer protection. Apparently the health and welfare of your citizens (our country, here in the U.S. versus what governmental agencies in the E.U.) is not the focus of the "services" they are expected to provide.

As a father, and as a science teacher, I feel absolutely horrible for using such toxic products on myself as well as my three children (baby wash, lotion, TOOTH PASTE!)....horomone disrupters, parabens, phthalates, etc. that reak havoc on our bodies. Consumers need to be aware of this issue, and need to be able to see through the marketing smoke screen that these companies have used to deceive us.
Thank you Ava! We look forward to your baby wash, deodorant, body lotion, etc. Thank you for delivering safe, non-toxic products. Thank you for the piece of mind, as a father, you give me, knowing that the products I will use on my children will not harm them!

I've been in the alternative health industry for a while so this is not news to me. It is a disturbing reality when cancer causing agents and toxic laden products are deemed safe by the FDA. There are alternatives out there though!!! For a FREE week worth of samples visit: www.km.lbri.com . There pure, natural products made in an organic aloe base all made in the USA. Protect yourself without sacrificing quality or effectiveness. You'll be so glad you did!

My skin sensitivities have always naturally limited I and my children's skin care options away from harsh synthetic ingredients. As I was growing Calendula in my garden, I noticed that when I picked the flowers for our salads, the resin was helping to heal the eczema on my hands. When my youngest daughter started getting allergic rashes on her tummy, I studied how to use our Calendula to make a cream to help. It took a couple of years, but we now have a beautiful all-natural and non-toxic soothing skin cream and lip balms made especially for children, and a growing business making and selling our Buttercup & Jake products. It is very rewarding to see big rows of golden Calendula organically grown for us by local farmers who are happy to attract bees and butterflies to their fields

I am really getting sick of people who can't figure out that this is parent positioning through a kid. Eva's mom and grandfather both were already into beauty and multi marketing before they did the work for Ava. She has not discovered anything new and come on, if any of you knew about the skin deep database, you would understand that even if something has a rating of 1 or 2, it can still be 100% nontoxic. The database does not distinguish between synthetic or natural or molecule size and that is why some show a 1 or even a 2 for toxicity.

This is a family that is already in the business of making money and lying to consumers but how sweet to appear to be a suddenly aware 15 year old. These are the kind of people that I warn consumers about-the BANDWAGON jumpers.

Get a life Ava and do something honest. Oh, and are all your consultants from your grandfathers already established company? HMMM.

Ava, thank you for bringing this crucial issue to light. From the comments, it sounds like you are enlightening so many people regarding what toxins they are currently using and that there is a choice available. We as consumers have the power to change this industry and stopping things like "fragrance" (which can be codeword for a multitude of unsafe chemicals) from being allowed by the FDA into our skin care products. I wish you much success and thank you for all your efforts!!

One would expect that the FDA would ensure our safety when we use these products. Sadly, we see more and more examples of these kinds of dangerous products getting past them.
