Tavi, a 13-Year-Old Blogger, Is the Fashion World's Latest Obsession. Something Wrong With This Picture?

With New York Fashion Week just a few days away, we thought we'd catch any stragglers up to speed on who will likely be one of the most photographed "ladies" (perhaps an overstatement) at the shows: 13-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson.

While the sartorial savvy have known about this pint-sized Chicago-residing fashion follower since she launched her "Style Rookie" blog in March 2008, Tavi mania has recently reached fever pitch, with 29,000 daily visitors (according to The Chicago Tribune) flocking to her site to read her fawning over high end designers and their collections.

This frenzy is in no small part due to Harper's Bazaar appointing Tavi its youngest columnist to date, edgy British magazines Pop and Love over-dressing her to appear on their respective covers and Target tapping the (just old enough to qualify as a teen) flavor of the month to host a video guide of the Rodarte for Target collaboration alongside her "friends," designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

Although, we're pretty sure junior high is back in session, Tavi could even be found sitting front row (with her father) at the recent haute couture shows in Paris, blogging for Pop and ticking off fellow attendees -- whose views were obstructed by her giant bow-adorned hat (a gift from famed milliner Stephen Jones, naturally) -- at Armani Privé.

Perhaps it's because the now grayish-blue haired girl has fashion heavyweights singing her praises, was "guest of honor" at a Comme des Garçons party in Tokyo and receives high end fashion freebies left and right that her critics have grown in number.

"It sums up the Haters thing altogether," Tavi writes on her blog of the bow hat incident.

"It is impossible for EVERYONE to be pleased with EVERYTHING. If I wore leather and studs no one would complain, and I'm not sorry for bringing a bit of color into the room. Haters gonna hate..."

Tavi also doesn't sound very sorry about her headpiece blocking others from seeing the Armani show, as she recently told The Fashion Informer that one of her favorite fashion week memories was "... meeting Stephen Jones and him giving me a hat and saying its knocking-people-in-the-face abilities were like old Dior dresses that would knock everyone's ashtrays over when the girls in them would spin." (Well, consider ashtrays knocked.)

While Tavi herself is rather harmless (though, let's face it, her overdone avant garde getups often warrant serious eye rolls), we've just become anti the whole Tavi phenomenon.

Our irritation mostly stems from the absurdity of fashion's biggest players anointing a 13-year-old blogger the next big thing and inserting her into an adult world that she has little business being a part of.

And maybe, at the core, having a 13-year-old seated in the front row and treated as a fashion expert, when she doesn't even have a fraction of the experience the seasoned journalists around -- or now behind -- her possess, is what really gets us.

We think this is the point Elle's Fashion News Director Anne Slowey was trying to get at when she recently told New York Magazine: "People in fashion are constantly looking for the next unique boundary-pushing extreme thing to get excited about, but, you know, it's like outsider art. What am I getting out of a 13-year-old's opinion about fashion? How does that help me distill the collections? What am I supposed to be buying? That's what an editor's job at a magazine is."

Although Slowey soon after tried to take back her statements (apparently nobody likes to look like they're picking on a 13-year-old), we think she hit the nail on the head.

"Unfortunately we live in a culture that sees children as novelties," Susan Stiffelman, a family therapist and author in Malibu, Calif., tells StyleList. "We do it with actors and kids that are singers. But people dismiss the long-term impact on the children."

"It's inevitable that she'll have a crash," Stiffelman says of Tavi. "But it's very unlikely that she has the internal emotional equipment to cope with the negatives and the absence of all of that praise and attention."

Based on her observations of fashion and sometimes witty prose, it's clear that Tavi is wise beyond her years. But we just hope she's mature enough to recognize the fickle world she's playing in. Because, as Heidi Klum says, one season you're in and the next you're out.

In other words, it's sort of like high school.

Note: Despite Tavi recently writing on her blog, "I want to be a part of a discussion that has pinpointed me specifically," within a longer diatribe about "bloggers vs. editors" and a warning that she'll be wearing more big hats during New York Fashion Week (read it all here), the young blogger did not respond to our requests for an interview.

What do you think of Tavi's icon status in the high stakes world of fashion: Is it harmless or potentially damaging? Let us know in a comment below.

Granted, Tavi's 12, but lets stop and think about types of children who are way mature for their age and get treated half the age they are. No recognition and/or a sympathetic laugh in the face for the comfort of persons who look no farther than their nose, but when there is a child who can take a role with a natural ability that most adults would fight over, she still gets the same ridicule for the obvious factor of a number. shes young, so its a common assumption that she is incapable and naive. To me, it seems the reason Tavi is pissing people off is because her lack of experience makes others, who took years to get their recognition, jealous they don't have it in the bag quit the way she does (not mentioning the fact that most fashion "experts" have a bias perception on the industry, who's to say a 12 year old can't have the same opinion as a renowned editor or fashion expert?). Why not give the kid a break, and if your worried about any psychological damage for her future, then that is were to point the finger at someone, her parents.

I actually go to school with Tavi, and I'm 13 years old as well. Even though she's always wearing funky accessories and crazy outfits, I praise her for how brave she is. Emerging into an industry with harsh criticism and cruel gossip has got to be hard at such a young age. I think it's amazing seeing as a 13 year old girl can have so much influence in the fashion industry. So again, I praise her.

This whole article is idiotic. This little girl is awesome and people should impressed by her, not resentful because they're unhappy with their own pathetic lives, whoever wrote this article included. The only thing 'infuriating' about this situation is how eager people are to blame a talented kid just because they know their lives are going no-where. Just because they're failures doesn't give them the right to find a reason to shoot down someone else's success. Tavi's hardly underhandedly stealing some magazine editor's job; she's a brilliant kid who's put her right of free speech to good use. 'When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him' - Jonathon Swift

Ugh...I'm sorry, but as a fellow teenage girl, I felt that I must respond. It's perfectly ok for a 13-year old to have a fashion blog- by all means, go ahead- but for her to have front row seats at Fashion Week? That's too far. I have gone on her blog and I think that she does know a lot about fashion, but her personal style? There is something that makes her stand out against other, older writers. And honestly, that "something" is not a good thing. Ripped, mixed-print tights? Hats with giant bows? GRAY hair?
I'm all for different styles for different people, but come on! Change your hair, change your clothes, and for God's sake, PLEASE shrink down your ego a little.

Truthfully, I just hope she is having fun while it lasts. Then when it is over, and you know it will be over at some point, the media will find something or someone else to swoon over. I hope then that she can still have fun just being a kid :)

other than the fact that this whole thing is just a marketing ploy for fashion magazines and runway shows(ridiculous in itself) this article is pathetic. attacking a 13 year old as if this writer wouldnt be jumping at the opportunity to do the same thing. "apparently nobody (except a no talent hack like myself) likes to look like their picking on a 13 year old". fashion models, magazines, editors, columnists and "journalists" like this are just not needed. build yourself up as if this crap matters one bit. get a life.

Ha Ha, I love her. She is the example of how foolish fashion and style are. This is very funny. Anyone who angers stylish and fashionable people are okay in my book. It says alot about an industry that is being led by a 13 yrd old. Good luck to her.

She doesnt look 13, she looks 60. It has to be an amazing experience for her being so young though. granted she probably doesnt deserve what she has been given but still for being so young and being that in the spotlight is pretty cool

anybody who shouts the right words here and there nowadays is considered an expert..for someone who is supposed to be a fashion messiah someone needs to steer the little girl to look into a mirror! if this is what fashion has come to, it is quite apparent people do anything for some ratings and publicity..
the 13 year old should be in junior high not in couture runways!

I'm not at all surprised that she's become such a sensation, because the fashion world really does love to fawn all over young lovely delicate girls. It's a truly frivolous, fickle thing, because the "look" is always changing. But Tavi embodies everything that is currently "in": slender, fair-skinned, big-eyed, sweet faced girl, dressed in over-sized bag lady outfits that swallow her small frame. Bright colors. Daring. Bold. Most importantly, foaming at the mouth over runway fashions. Of course designers are eating this up. And I think the fashion world really embraces youthfulness, often looking for model with almost childlike features.

I don't necessarily believe this is harmful to Tavi. She adores the attention, I'm sure, and the gifts, and being "in", and she is very articulate, very smart, charismatic, and good for her.

It's unfortunate that adult writers and editors have become so embittered by what seems to be jealousy towards a 13-year-old girl. It's actually pretty pathetic.

This might not last for long, because what's so intriguing about her right now is not that she's doing everything she's doing, but that's she's doing it at 13.

I guess it's pretty sad that any of her outfits are causing 'eyerolls' considering a lot of it does seem to be replicating things in magazines or on runways. I don't think she's done anything wrong. And doesn't it seem just a little childish for adults to be expressing this kind of jealousy, or distaste, or 'oh, puh-leease!' towards a young girl? If you're an editor, sitting in your office waiting for Tavi Gevinson to crash and burn in her pursuit of fashion blogging success, then that's just.... pitiful.

Let her have her fun! She's being supervised by a parent and gaining insight to a world most of us will never see. And probably one day it will make a cute movie for Disney.

Really?? You're really giving this cool THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD a hard time?? Wow. Pathetic. You're clearly jealous that you aren't half as successful as this edgy thirteen-year-old girl. I have never read her blog, and maybe her style isn't my taste either, but there is really no need to criticize her like this. Being a woman yourself, you should know that teen years can be rough, and good for Tavi for having the courage to be unique. To be honest I couldn't even finnish the whole article out of sheer disgust.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to take fashion critiques from some over-privileged little girl that looks like a nursing home resident. I seriously thought she had Progeria when I saw her picture. For someone who is supposed to be fashion savvy, she looks like she was dressed by Helen Keller and Stevie Wonder in a dark room. Maybe she should stop mixing and matching all those handouts and try dressing like a normal person for once.

Matt, I laughed out loud when I read your comment. "...dressed by Helen Keller and Stevie Wonder in a dark room" was classic and perfectly described her horrible look.

your pathetic, anyone who in the fashion world who is actually threatened by a thirteen year-old doesn't deserve to be in the fashion world.
she's a child who is just trying to find the right spot in the world for herself.
its people like you that ruin kids dreams.
leave her, and her big hats ( which i think are cute as a button), alone and grow up and focus on your own job.
you people push thirteen year old on the runways in paris all the time, so why can't one be doing your job.
ive never read her blog, but i already have twenty times more respect for her, then i do for you.

You call yourself a "seasoned journalist" after writing this:

"...nobody likes to look like THEIR picking on a 13-year-old."

I've never heard of this little girl before, or you, for that matter. All I'm reading here is about everyone's self-importance.

The dilemma of what to buy and who to wear will soon be gone. Enjoy your life free of struggle and true prioritization while you can.
