Tavi, a 13-Year-Old Blogger, Is the Fashion World's Latest Obsession. Something Wrong With This Picture?

With New York Fashion Week just a few days away, we thought we'd catch any stragglers up to speed on who will likely be one of the most photographed "ladies" (perhaps an overstatement) at the shows: 13-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson.

While the sartorial savvy have known about this pint-sized Chicago-residing fashion follower since she launched her "Style Rookie" blog in March 2008, Tavi mania has recently reached fever pitch, with 29,000 daily visitors (according to The Chicago Tribune) flocking to her site to read her fawning over high end designers and their collections.

This frenzy is in no small part due to Harper's Bazaar appointing Tavi its youngest columnist to date, edgy British magazines Pop and Love over-dressing her to appear on their respective covers and Target tapping the (just old enough to qualify as a teen) flavor of the month to host a video guide of the Rodarte for Target collaboration alongside her "friends," designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

Although, we're pretty sure junior high is back in session, Tavi could even be found sitting front row (with her father) at the recent haute couture shows in Paris, blogging for Pop and ticking off fellow attendees -- whose views were obstructed by her giant bow-adorned hat (a gift from famed milliner Stephen Jones, naturally) -- at Armani Privé.

Perhaps it's because the now grayish-blue haired girl has fashion heavyweights singing her praises, was "guest of honor" at a Comme des Garçons party in Tokyo and receives high end fashion freebies left and right that her critics have grown in number.

"It sums up the Haters thing altogether," Tavi writes on her blog of the bow hat incident.

"It is impossible for EVERYONE to be pleased with EVERYTHING. If I wore leather and studs no one would complain, and I'm not sorry for bringing a bit of color into the room. Haters gonna hate..."

Tavi also doesn't sound very sorry about her headpiece blocking others from seeing the Armani show, as she recently told The Fashion Informer that one of her favorite fashion week memories was "... meeting Stephen Jones and him giving me a hat and saying its knocking-people-in-the-face abilities were like old Dior dresses that would knock everyone's ashtrays over when the girls in them would spin." (Well, consider ashtrays knocked.)

While Tavi herself is rather harmless (though, let's face it, her overdone avant garde getups often warrant serious eye rolls), we've just become anti the whole Tavi phenomenon.

Our irritation mostly stems from the absurdity of fashion's biggest players anointing a 13-year-old blogger the next big thing and inserting her into an adult world that she has little business being a part of.

And maybe, at the core, having a 13-year-old seated in the front row and treated as a fashion expert, when she doesn't even have a fraction of the experience the seasoned journalists around -- or now behind -- her possess, is what really gets us.

We think this is the point Elle's Fashion News Director Anne Slowey was trying to get at when she recently told New York Magazine: "People in fashion are constantly looking for the next unique boundary-pushing extreme thing to get excited about, but, you know, it's like outsider art. What am I getting out of a 13-year-old's opinion about fashion? How does that help me distill the collections? What am I supposed to be buying? That's what an editor's job at a magazine is."

Although Slowey soon after tried to take back her statements (apparently nobody likes to look like they're picking on a 13-year-old), we think she hit the nail on the head.

"Unfortunately we live in a culture that sees children as novelties," Susan Stiffelman, a family therapist and author in Malibu, Calif., tells StyleList. "We do it with actors and kids that are singers. But people dismiss the long-term impact on the children."

"It's inevitable that she'll have a crash," Stiffelman says of Tavi. "But it's very unlikely that she has the internal emotional equipment to cope with the negatives and the absence of all of that praise and attention."

Based on her observations of fashion and sometimes witty prose, it's clear that Tavi is wise beyond her years. But we just hope she's mature enough to recognize the fickle world she's playing in. Because, as Heidi Klum says, one season you're in and the next you're out.

In other words, it's sort of like high school.

Note: Despite Tavi recently writing on her blog, "I want to be a part of a discussion that has pinpointed me specifically," within a longer diatribe about "bloggers vs. editors" and a warning that she'll be wearing more big hats during New York Fashion Week (read it all here), the young blogger did not respond to our requests for an interview.

What do you think of Tavi's icon status in the high stakes world of fashion: Is it harmless or potentially damaging? Let us know in a comment below.

Haters gonna hate, yeah, B U T , disrespectin' s gonna cost ya.
If she were a 13 year old at a movie theatre with that hat on, she would be told, OUT OF RESPECT for others around her, to take off the hat - or leave. Obviously she has the insight of a 13 year old, as she should. Put her in the front seat of the fashion show, let her disrespect those trying to watch the show, and when someone knocks it off her 13 year old head and everyone starts screaming she's a KID. Welllllll. DUH!!

I like this,

I think that every 13 year old kid should grow up with a bad body image and dress up like it's Halloween every day,.

I also love the fact the when she starts to date she'll be yesterday's news, a pathetic little shell of her glory years?

This is another example of parents letting their children grow up too fast, putting way too much belief in their opinions and egging them on to be what they want to be with absolutely no preparation to face life and the shots to the nuts that come with it.

I would love to see this kid when she turns into an opinionated 16 year old that the fashion industry has tossed aside like a used napkin from McDonald's.

Dr, Drew!

Here's your next show.

Kids that are given a voice, not reigned in, and left to run roughshod amongst people who allow it.

Here's another hint as to what this kid will turn out to be...

No apology for ruining someone else's good time because you decided to wrap a piece of floral ribbon on your head and decide that it is fashion..

This kid is just like the crashes at the Daytona 500....You know it's gonna happen, you just have to keep watching the race.

I love it Dito. Call it like you see it! I agree with you, absolutely. harp and witty, and I know I couldn't have said it better myself. I know Tavia will appreciate your remark.

wow; someone who would have actually FIT into most of my old vintage stuff I had to get rid of!! (and worn it perhaps, too!!!). I was sort of skinny (lol; understatement?) or .. some of it just flat out shrunk and I coulfd not bear to toss it until recently... but I did have lots of really great genuine '60's things (Betsy Johnson for one who is STILL fabulous). fortunayely I sew and was able to make patterns of some of it. tights (yeah; even had some of THEM (as well as stuff a friend passed to me which shrunk on HER). oh well, this kid can probably afford NEW stuff or pay retail for hers, lol. (not to mention hitting the fleas inLondon, Paris if she has any sense which I'd imagine she DOES have! a most prodigious beginning. wish her luck. few of us get beginnings such as hers! hatin the photo aoppeared to be .. drawn on or something until I looked more closely. personally I don't think I'd have worn it some place wherte I'd have blocked views, but perhaps this is one of those 'had to be there' (or her?) things. then again ... she IS short, right?

It is really very funny. She really does look like my grandma with the gray blue hair, ripe red lipstick, and mixed colors. But the new generations never met my grandpartents generation, so they really think it is all NEW. ROFL.

It is also very funny that the fashion industry decided she was hip.... Hahahahaha. Why? Because she looks like grandma? Or because she is youg? Maybe the fashion industry deserves her... lol

The world around my teenage daughter is all about fitting in, fashion, what is the latest, greatest item. It should be that there is a rep for the teen group at these fashion shows. Granted that is high end but I believe the lower end copies a lot of that fashion. Ever see how many stores in the mall cater to the teen group....big money. Her looks...her own. Comments on the being white thing...total ignorance. Hope you don't have kids because you pass that shi... on!!!!

Why is Katie Hintz-Zambrano making such a big deal about her? As I read this I could see that this person is talking down on her. I mean she got invited to a fashion show, whats wrong with that? And If a desinger gave me something of course I would wear it, unless I want them to think I don't like it and hurt their feelings. "Our irritation" Um im pretty sure it's just yours. She's a child Geez.

...I'd THINK 'parents' would sooner that their kids are more like HER (or at least creative, individual and use their heads!) rather than becoming imitations of all the other forms of 'teen life' which present themselves on the small screen or in magazines. Just needed to say that!

Thought it was just me, but as I read comments posted already, I see there are others that saw what I saw. A little old gray-haired lady I'd never heard of til this article. Forget the so-called HAT! The 30s & 40s RED lipstick (which was the only color available then) is a real turnoff. How thrilled girls 16 & older were when they came out with more appealing colors! Thumbs down to Tavi and may she not last long!!!!

OMG, I REALY THOUGHT THIS PIC WAS A MISPRINT. SHE AT THE YOUNGEST, LOOKS FORTY COUPLE. WHAT PARENTS WOULD LET A CHILD DYE THEIR HAIR TO LOOK ELDERLY ON PURPOSE. WITH THOSE CLOTHES, SHE LOOKS LIKE A BAG LADY~NOT A FASHIONISTA! THE OTHER PIC WITH THE BLACK HAT MAKES HER LOOK LIKE JFK'S MOTHER IN THE 60'S! I AM ALL ABOUT FASHION, BUT THIS IS NOT WHAT 13 YEAR OLD GIRLS ARE WEARING, ESPECIALLY TO SCHOOL~WHERE SHE SHOULD BE! PARENTS CARE MORE ABOUT A CHILD BEING SUCCESSFUL & PERHAPS MAKING THEM SOME MONEY, THAN THEM GETTING A GOOD, PROPER EDUCATION APPARENTLY. STAY HOME FROM PARIS DAD & GET YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, I think that if you have the maturity to do this, then do it. When I was her age, I wrote so many different things, which brings me to my on coming career: Journalism. Let her do as she wants and who is it to others to tell her parents how she is to be raised. If they think this is a good thing for their child, great.

Also the racial stuff, really? Come on. Some people actually have the talent to do what they can even at a young age, must I say... Don't blame anyone but yourself for your own failures.

Are you kidding me? This gril isn't doing ANYTHING NEW!!! We had kids that dressed like that when I was in high school back in the 90's!!! Some took it a bit farther, and went more goth than others, but she looks like a fabric store was put into a blender and then a garbage dissposal and puked up her outfits!!! Give me a break!!! Can you seriously see any girl in fashion wearing her crap? I think not!!! She has been called "wise beyond her years"? You are killing me!!! She has a thing or two to learn, and yet, she still needs to grow up!!! My cousin used to wear two different socks to school every day so she could be different, who knew, if she could have been spread around the internet back then, she could have been found a genious!!! Give me a break!!! Just looking at her clothes makes me want to gag!!!

I have a fashion blog and would love to receive the amount of attention that Tavi receives. However, I would not subject myself to wearing ugly outfits and dying my hair gray. I focus on my writing rather than myself. I feel that I would have a different (and better) point of view from Tavi.
