Tavi, a 13-Year-Old Blogger, Is the Fashion World's Latest Obsession. Something Wrong With This Picture?

With New York Fashion Week just a few days away, we thought we'd catch any stragglers up to speed on who will likely be one of the most photographed "ladies" (perhaps an overstatement) at the shows: 13-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson.

While the sartorial savvy have known about this pint-sized Chicago-residing fashion follower since she launched her "Style Rookie" blog in March 2008, Tavi mania has recently reached fever pitch, with 29,000 daily visitors (according to The Chicago Tribune) flocking to her site to read her fawning over high end designers and their collections.

This frenzy is in no small part due to Harper's Bazaar appointing Tavi its youngest columnist to date, edgy British magazines Pop and Love over-dressing her to appear on their respective covers and Target tapping the (just old enough to qualify as a teen) flavor of the month to host a video guide of the Rodarte for Target collaboration alongside her "friends," designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy.

Although, we're pretty sure junior high is back in session, Tavi could even be found sitting front row (with her father) at the recent haute couture shows in Paris, blogging for Pop and ticking off fellow attendees -- whose views were obstructed by her giant bow-adorned hat (a gift from famed milliner Stephen Jones, naturally) -- at Armani Privé.

Perhaps it's because the now grayish-blue haired girl has fashion heavyweights singing her praises, was "guest of honor" at a Comme des Garçons party in Tokyo and receives high end fashion freebies left and right that her critics have grown in number.

"It sums up the Haters thing altogether," Tavi writes on her blog of the bow hat incident.

"It is impossible for EVERYONE to be pleased with EVERYTHING. If I wore leather and studs no one would complain, and I'm not sorry for bringing a bit of color into the room. Haters gonna hate..."

Tavi also doesn't sound very sorry about her headpiece blocking others from seeing the Armani show, as she recently told The Fashion Informer that one of her favorite fashion week memories was "... meeting Stephen Jones and him giving me a hat and saying its knocking-people-in-the-face abilities were like old Dior dresses that would knock everyone's ashtrays over when the girls in them would spin." (Well, consider ashtrays knocked.)

While Tavi herself is rather harmless (though, let's face it, her overdone avant garde getups often warrant serious eye rolls), we've just become anti the whole Tavi phenomenon.

Our irritation mostly stems from the absurdity of fashion's biggest players anointing a 13-year-old blogger the next big thing and inserting her into an adult world that she has little business being a part of.

And maybe, at the core, having a 13-year-old seated in the front row and treated as a fashion expert, when she doesn't even have a fraction of the experience the seasoned journalists around -- or now behind -- her possess, is what really gets us.

We think this is the point Elle's Fashion News Director Anne Slowey was trying to get at when she recently told New York Magazine: "People in fashion are constantly looking for the next unique boundary-pushing extreme thing to get excited about, but, you know, it's like outsider art. What am I getting out of a 13-year-old's opinion about fashion? How does that help me distill the collections? What am I supposed to be buying? That's what an editor's job at a magazine is."

Although Slowey soon after tried to take back her statements (apparently nobody likes to look like they're picking on a 13-year-old), we think she hit the nail on the head.

"Unfortunately we live in a culture that sees children as novelties," Susan Stiffelman, a family therapist and author in Malibu, Calif., tells StyleList. "We do it with actors and kids that are singers. But people dismiss the long-term impact on the children."

"It's inevitable that she'll have a crash," Stiffelman says of Tavi. "But it's very unlikely that she has the internal emotional equipment to cope with the negatives and the absence of all of that praise and attention."

Based on her observations of fashion and sometimes witty prose, it's clear that Tavi is wise beyond her years. But we just hope she's mature enough to recognize the fickle world she's playing in. Because, as Heidi Klum says, one season you're in and the next you're out.

In other words, it's sort of like high school.

Note: Despite Tavi recently writing on her blog, "I want to be a part of a discussion that has pinpointed me specifically," within a longer diatribe about "bloggers vs. editors" and a warning that she'll be wearing more big hats during New York Fashion Week (read it all here), the young blogger did not respond to our requests for an interview.

What do you think of Tavi's icon status in the high stakes world of fashion: Is it harmless or potentially damaging? Let us know in a comment below.

As a journalist who has worked many years to get to where I am and who has to work even harder in these fickle economic times (and this goes for every profession), I am baffled by the attention this young girl is getting. On one hand, she's obviously savvy and possesses a certain amount of flair, but on the other hand she is only attracting attention simply because she's 13 and has an eccentric style. Good for her, but she needs to remember that she is not a fashion editor; she is not even at the level of a fashion magazine's average intern. It takes many years of hard work and expertise is not acquired by sitting in the front row of fashion shows, wearing eccentric clothes and writing down opinions about this or that designer's latest collection.

She has a long way to go to become an icon status...I think the praises as well as the criticism from the adults that surround her are what is the most damaging in this scenario. Praise her for her wisdom but always remind her that she is still in a child's place. I never understood why these entertainment and fashion industries place the youth in adult situations.

So....some people want to protect a 13 year old-a child.....sure!! Kids should be allowed to express themselves. Others want to criticize the fashion world for putting a young, ignorant girl on a pedestal ....well, I agree with that also. A 13 year old child cannot be blamed for being a part of the "fashion scene", she was most likely invited to all of this crap and, honestly, who would refuse the pictures and the limelight? Unfortunately, this type of exposure makes a lot of people angry and its being focused on a child who, under the law, is not responsible for her actions. You want to blame someone? Blame the parents...this child should be in school and putting her fabulous attention towards grammar and diction into an Ivy League school. Fashion? Very fickle. Education? It lasts forever. I think its wonderful she is having fun...but the party can't last forever. Once it's officially over, I hope she applies her talents towards something BETTER and more IMPORTANT towards society. If this does not happen, don't blame this ambitious girl....blame her parents who should be teaching her better!

I wonder who can write better - the person who wrote this article, or the creepy kid with the negligent parents? Minus 1 for the article writers right there.

This sort of rubbish is what keeps perpetuating this idea that fashion is some sort of club that you have to pay your dues to in order to ascend. i love tavi for what she is, an insightful eye with wit and tenacity. her age truly is irrelevant in terms of her place in the fashion world she's established using only her own intelligence and natural talent. however, it does amplify the need that current publications have for a non-stale voice of sartorial guidance because if they need to recruit a 13 year old then their pool of writers is where the problem lies. tavi is an inspiration and i say that knowing how trite it sounds. but i only dole out that compliment to those that are truly deserving and she definitely does. she has no boundaries and she is unique which is what is causing all these problems. she doesn't buy into the high school mentality it seems like all the senior journalists are projecting. tavi forevez!

Wow, what sour grapes from the author! If she would have been this zealous at 13, she would have deserved being disliked more than Tavi. Bleh, the bitterness turns my stomach.

Who cares. Did you see those people she was posing with? If she wants to play dress up with a bunch of Bowie wannabes pretending they're "unique", then let her. That's what being a teenager is all about isn't it? A severe case of self centered righteousness, talking down to anyone with an assurance that you're more important than anyone else, and emulating people while trying to rebel and be "different"? Sounds like she found the right world, the only difference between designers and children is the pay. As long as the media overlooks this we'll avoid another self-appointed "celebrity." As long as she's not being shoved in my face like every other idiot with a blog gone famous, (Perez who?) then what's it matter what happens to her as she gets older? She'll either grow out of it or grow up worthless like spaceman up there. The world keeps spinning.

"Bowie wannabes pretending they're "unique" "

do you even have any idea whatsoever what you are talking about? That is Karl Lagerfeld. CHANEL....CHANEL! That is why this is pathetic, it is people who have no idea what they are talking about bashing someone they have never met or know. If you want to mock Karl Lagerfeld, and think you will be taken seriously...then forget it. Do your homework next time.

You're right John, that's why it's pathetic. People such as yourself are so caught up in yourself and names of people that stand on their own "holier than thou" stage that they can't realize that it doesn't matter. At all. You could burn to death tomorrow and I'm pretty sure no one will ask "That's terrible, but was he wearing D+G?" You've proved my point quite aptly so thank you, not that you'll understand why with all that ignorance and self-involvement in the way. Now be a good little boy and go play dress up while the adults talk.

I understand what this article is trying to say, but so what if she's only thirteen. I think that the people who have a problem with her success, are the people that have worked their whole lives to get where she is at, when she basically posted a few blogs. In other terms, they're jealous of her success. She has the right to get what she's getting, and no one has the right to judge her because of her age. She sets a good example for other kids her age, and it motivates them to work up to their dreams. Her success says, " It's never too early to live your dream."

She does look like an old lady. Well, to each her own. If we were all the same, what a boring world this would be. Fashion expert? Who knows? I work in a public high school and you have to be small-framed to wear the clothes. Big girls try to pour theselves into small-designed clothes and they look like sausages. Maybe if a young teen were calling the shots, the fashion world would not be made up of twig-skinny skeletons. Maybe we need this breath of fresh air. Enjoy yourself, Tavi.

Okay people, seriously? First of all, this little girl has absolutely no idea what she's getting herself into and furthermore, she's like a young Lady GaGa. I like GaGa a great deal, but she's an adult. Tavi? A 13-year-old girl who has no actual knowledge of fashion. So note to the dimwitted fashion designers worshipping her: I bet you won't like her six months from now. She'll be old news and nobody will be interested in her anymore.I'm a 14-year-old writer and plan to take over the world within the next two years. But do I claim I know everything and then get snotty when someone's telling me the truth?: no, or at least I rarely do. That girl needs to get a grip and go to a fashion school or at least grow up first before thinking she's stuff.

Tisk...13-year-old bloggers. You've got to be bloody kidding me.

Her "avante garde" style, is pathetic. I don't think she has any style worthy of "head-turning" Her hair is not appealing. And her style is tacky, and cheap looking.....and do you know why? Because she's thirteen. A know-nothing child. And why is it that experienced adults are praising her for being a fashion expert when some of them have been putting together their ensembles for longer than she has been ALIVE. What business has a thirteen year old have even wearing red-as-a-rose lipstick. When I was thirteen, I wasn't even aloud to WEAR makeup in excess. If you ask me, I bet you anything that this little girl is just a very rich, know-it-all. Mommy and Daddy pay for all her little "faux pa" EXPLOSIONS. And trips around the world to these fashion shows. So she know how to write? Configuring a series of complicated word on a paper with a dictionary in hand is easy.

Clearly not so easy, you misspelled 'faux pas'. You also managed to drop the 's' of about three words in your paragraph. And she's supposed to be the 'know-nothing child'...
