Toyota Dealers Give 'Recall Manicures'

Talk about nailing your customer service.

As dealerships around the country run damage control with the massive 4.6 million car recall – with 437,000 Prius hybrid cars added just this morning for brake issues – Toyota has given them between $7,500 and $75,000 to help assuage cranky clients while they deal with all of the repairs, reports The New York Post today.

And the managers at Atlantic Toyota in Amityville, LI are getting creative, offering perks like relaxing free mani's for frazzled car owners while they wait for their Toyotas to get fixed.

"They said to me, 'You can get a manicure," said Roseanne Letizia. "It is the first time I ever got a manicure at a car dealership."

The hired professional manicurist at hand – Margaret Volence – worked on six different clients in the dealership's waiting room yesterday, while their Toyotas were completely checked out for defects. Not only did the ladies take advantage of this fun benefit; Volence pampered three men with mani's too.

And the perks you can expect to see from Toyota dealerships cross country who are trying to keep customers from hopping to other automakers don't just stop at manicures.

"We're giving out free movie passes, and we drive them to the movies while their car is being worked on. We are trying to calm them down a little," said one employee at Atlantic Toyota.

But if you're a Toyota owner whose car is on the recall list, you better book an appointment ASAP. Despite being open for longer hours that in many places reach until midnight, dealerships like Star Toyota in Bayside, Queens are already booked solid for repairs for the next four to five weeks.

"We've done everything we can to get them back in their cars and driving safe," said Franz Casimir, a Toyota Parts and Service Director.

And clearly, Toyota dealers know – nothing makes you feel brand new again like a fresh, sparkling manicure.

My Toyota dealer has been giving manicures on Wednesdays for a very long time. Way before the recall issues. I heard a dealer in VA Beach has a movie theater.
Midbluehungry: Get over yourself. Toyotas are hardly garbage! And everything is toxic - deodorant, aeresol cans, plastic bottles, etc...

TOYota/ is garbage. TOYota slime and debris is surfacing. They have no choice but to come clean now. The timing is much easier for TOYota given the dilapidated state of GM.

Good luck with you nails, sweetcakes.

should'nt toyota lower the residual on the end lease now that the price is falling on a used car,my daughter is looking at buying her car and I think with all the recalls that her car has lost value any thoughts?

A great example of how Japanese car companies spent the last 30 years marketing and attaracting female car buyers. Unfortuately, the Detroit automakers spent the last 30 years employing their same old "Detroit macho, hard-guy, mean Detroit" marketing style they had always used. I contend GM, Ford and Chrysler missed the boat in correctly measuring how America's affluence patterns, attitudes and tastes changed during the last 30 years, especially the growing influence and wealth of women in the marketplace.

I didnt get a manicure....I didnt even get a letter that my Lexus had been recalled, but it was. Im not sure Im getting the point of this recall. My gas pedal was a good 2 inches from reaching the floor mat, but still it was recalled. They chopped off my gas pedal but left the bracket that supports the gas pedal intact? Is this really a problem or is this a bandaid to cover up potential problems that no one is really understanding. Once you are told you may be driving a run-a-way vehicle, and the fix is to chop off a couple of inches of a pedal while leaving the framework at the original length, doesnt make me feel real safe that the problem has really be taken care of. Maybe you dont own a Toyota or a Lexus but that isnt going to keep someone that does from screaming through an intersection and hitting you. I am very concerned that Toyota is covering themselves by doing, something...anything to try to avoid potential law suits. I specifically asked the Lexus dealer if the floor mat problem also affected the Lexus and was told NO. Now I have a new 2010 Lexus with 150 miles on it, a chopped off gas pedal with the brackets hanging below it and not knowing if it is fixed or not? As concerned as I am purchasing a new car with a defect, I would rather know for sure if that is the problem or if that is a guess at what is wrong with it.

I agree 100% with you. I think a class action suit is in order here. I don't care how much they "fix" the problem, the resale value, trade-in value and any future value of this car is going in the toilet. I think the only honorable (aren't the Japanese real into that word?) solution is to refund the full purchase price of every car involved. Nothing else is going to make me happy.

If they are trying to reach out to women, they should begin by making the cars safe, and then make them smaller so they are comfortable for women.

Cool idea! They're being creative and bending over backwards to keep people informed, to apologize, and to try and give the inconvenienced some perks to ease the stress and aggravation. I have a Pathfinder, which I love, but it has been in for multiple recalls, and was frankly made to feel like an inconvenience to the shop owners, rather than the other way around! Toyota is trying, so let's move forward.

This is old. My Toyota dealership that I take my car to to get serviced has had a manicurist there one or two days a week for almost 2 years now or even longer. Nothing new to me.
