Alexander McQueen Commits Suicide

The fashion world was in shock today with news that British designer Alexander McQueen has taken his own life.

The 40-year-old "enfant terrible" was often credited with revitalizing a flagging British fashion industry with his flamboyant womenswear and outrageous runway presentations.

In 1999 he sent amputee model Aimee Mullins down the catwalk in a pair of hand-carved wooden legs and boots, a spectacle which jolted him to the front pages of the world's fashion press.

The designer was devastated last week by the death of his mother. In addition, insiders say McQueen, whose health has been the subject of gossip within the fashion industry for years, never recovered from the suicide three years ago of his close friend, stylist Isabella Blow.

Blow, known for her theatrical hats, discovered McQueen while she was the fashion editor of society magazine Tatler and promoted him with her considerable influence.

The designer was known by personal friends by his real first name, Lee. McQueen explained that when he began selling his designs he was still accepting unemployment benefits from the government, and didn't want to use his legal name in case they found out and cut off his checks.

Another famous anecdote had the young designer, as an apprentice tailor on fancy Saville Row, sewing an obscenity into the lining of a custom-made suit jacket for Prince Charles. He also had unflattering (and unprintable) things to say about contemporary figures such as David Beckham.

McQueen's death has been confirmed by his office, which offered no further details. He was set to debut his new collection at the Paris shows in March.

Update: It is being reported in his home country that the tormented designer is believed to have hanged himself in his London flat mere days after the loss of his mother on Feb. 2.

And check out Alexander McQueen's boundary pushing beauty.

this is a real tragedy to the fashion world-he will certainly be missed by all-so sad that he was silently suffering-may is sole rest in peace and may we never forget that people are troubled even though we think they have the perfect life.

Please explain how you put a dead man on trial for committing suicide? That makes no sense at all. He killed himself, so how can you sentence him to death when he is already dead? Besides, it's his life and he wants to end it that's his business and no one elses.

The homophobic, and ingnorant remarks made here by some people are apalling. I can't believe this is how the world still is. And it's no wonder why the teen glbt suicide rate is up. It's because of you ignorant bastards who have no heart, nor compassion. It's a sad day in the fashion industry. Alexander Mcqueen was and is a fashion icon, and it's sad his life was cut short. RIP.

RIP Alexandre McQueen. You are in the Lords hands and with your mother. Hopefully you are happy and the pain has subsided. Give a kiss to Mrs Blow for all of us

Clearly troubled. I never heard of him til now but out of curiosity I wanted to see his last collection. Clearly his Fall Collection 2010 says a lot about his state of mind. Look at the clothing which depicts a sense of emptiness. When you view the stage backdrop you can see skulls in the decor as well as what appears to be the guts of something. A sweater which has a builtin design of skull and crossbones. Unhappy and void of hope.

Horrible thing to say. I had no idea who he was, don't really care now, but to speak of someone that way is just pathetically sad.

PLEASE stop misusing the word, "homophobic." By definition, a homophobe is one who is afraid of homosexuals, NOT necessarily one who makes disparaging remarks about homosexuals or who simply disagrees with the homosexual lifestyle. "Homophobe" and "homophobic" have been misused (mainly by the politically correct crowd) to label anyone who does not accept with open arms the homosexual agenda. And its wrong.

For a gay man who is forty and that ugly, there is no other way out. Let's hope he finds peace on the other side!

Hey, it's fine to disagree with a person choosing to be gay. That kind of lifestyle is wrong, after all. But there's no need to use really ugly words as you did. Your case goes right down the drain when you display meanness like that.

first of all as a lesbian and a catholic i'm sick and tired of people (Christians cause I know about Christianity) saying being gay is wrong, immoral, and a sin against Gos. People need to read the bible a little better then again the bible is one big contradiction but i want people to really look at what the so called "anti-gay" stories in the bible really say. I mean come on it was a book written thousands of years ago and some of you still can't even process the fact. Misunderstanding of some of the writing would occur; but for you to call your loving, caring, and sympathetic God a hypocrite by saying he hates gays and condemns them to hell wouldn't you be going against you're God too? Cause Jesus was the one who said he without sin cast the first stone and all of you who claim gay is wrong is most likely not without sin so i want you to think next time you say being gay is a sin against God cause it isn't

now as for Alexander McQueen's death...he will truly be missed i have much respect for him and his works of art especially the heels Lady GaGa wore in Bad Romance talk about outrageously gorgeous and stellarly flattering

Plain and simple....my sympathy to the family, friends, and fashion community in the loss of Alexander McQueen. The overwhelming saddness he felt in losing his mother and close friend was too much for him to handle alone. May he rest in peace. For those who feel the need to respond with negative comments...do something kind to a complete stranger today or in the near future, and see how it feels.
