In a trend that was started last season by forward-thinking Alexander McQueen, both Jacobs and Calvin Klein will be streaming their collections via their websites. CK will also be shown in real time on Facebook with chat functions allowing viewers to weigh in on the collections. Alexander Wang and Rodarte have opted to stream their shows via SHOWstudio, photographer Nick Knight's next-gen fashion site. Reem Acra has done away with her runway show altogether in favor of an online-only film courtesy of French filmmaker Cyril Guyot and stylist Laura Ferrara.
Some industry insiders are grumbling that this is the end of New York Fashion Week as we know it, but we say it's the natural progression from the play-by-play slideshows we've already been following for years. Besides, with the frigid conditions in New York, watching the shows from the comfort of our laptops doesn't sound like such a bad idea.
But our secret hope is that New York catches up with London. The Brits will be streaming all of their shows online. And Burberry is going one better by doing it in 3D.
Now if only they could work out that teleporting technology: Fashion Week 2020. Male models in your living room (a girl can dream, can't she?).
