The small town Vermonter "prefers to be overdressed than under-dressed," and when she's not in skiwear, loves glamming it up in dresses and heels. She even personalizes the identical US Ski Team gear with a fun cherry belt.
StyleList chatted with Kearney just before she jetted off to Vancouver, for the scoop on her ski style, her "nonexistent" beauty routine, and how food is a "major part" of her life.
StyleList: What is your beauty regime during training and does it change at all when you are at the Olympics?
Hannah Kearney: Unfortunately my beauty regime is almost non existent when I am training. I spend the entire day sweating as I warm up, skiing with a helmet and exposing my face to the elements, sweating again as I spin on a bike to recover then jumping back and forth between the hot tub and a tub of cold water to keep my muscles fresh. There is very little time or place for makeup or even stylish clothes! However, sunscreen, chapstick, lotion and deep conditioner for my hair are part of my routine because I am outside and often at altitude in dry climates and winter weather. None of the aforementioned rituals will change while I am at the Olympics, but with more media attention, there may be chances to blow dry my hair and wear makeup. Then again, I will probably be quite busy and consumed with training and that always comes first.
SL: Does it vary when you're...competing? Being interviewed on camera?
HK: It doesn't change when I am competing, but I like to clean myself up for off the ski slope interviews.
SL: Which brands or products are must-haves for you during the most blistering days?
HK: Aloe Up makes a great line of products that are incredibly useful. From chapsticks with SPF to soothing lotions and waterproof sunscreens as well as pure aloe vera for burnt skin.
SL: What are your go-to accessories or clothing items?
HK: Because we always have to wear a uniform to compete my teammates and I look the exact same. My belt is the only accessory that I get to choose. I usually wear a yellow cloth belt with cherries or a leather belt with a beautiful tree buckle that I got at a thrift store. In my personal life, I really like the look of vests. I wear fitted, business ones, and perfectly preppy sweater vests that I can knit myself.
SL: What do you wear when you're at the Olympics and you aren't competing?
HK: You receive several duffle bags filled with Team USA gear and this makes up your wardrobe for the next few weeks. I packed all my red, white and blue clothes because I will be spending the majority of my time after my event cheering on my country. I remember wearing jeans in the athlete village in 2006 and feeling very over dressed! However, this year we will be in a major city so hopefully there will be opportunities to get dressed up for some meals out on the town.
SL: Do you have any pre-race day good luck routines or rituals (especially for the Olympics)?
HK: No rituals, but I always go through an extensive warm up routine before I compete or train to get my muscles firing and prevent injury.
SL: What do you feel more comfortable in, (sweats, a pair of jeans, a cocktail dress or your ski gear)?
HK: I feel comfortable in all of these outfits. I love to feel cozy in sweats, but when I return from a ski trip, I can't wait to wear tights, dresses and high heels (they just aren't practical to pack on my trips). The great thing about women's clothing is that there are endless options and I embrace them all.
SL: Do you have style icons? If so, who are they?
HK: I don't have any style icons, but I get inspiration from my friends. My style motto is that it is better to be over dressed than under dressed.
SL: What is a typical day in the life for you?
HK: Depends on the time of year, but the sole focus in my life for the past few years has been skiing so my time is consumed with training, traveling and competing. Exercise and food are major parts of my life!
SL: Are you able to express yourself stylistically while you're on the slopes? Any signature features? (For example, you usually have your hair in braids!)
HK: As I mentioned before, we are required to wear specific clothing, but I have a trademark hairstyle and that is braided pigtails tucked up into my goggle straps. I guess the tufts of hair make me stand out a bit.
SL: What's your most killer move?
HK: Although I, and all of the women competing in the Olympics have been doing it for years, I still think it is pretty cool that I can do a backflip on snow.

Does anyone know where to find the nike sneakers hannah was wearing during her interview after her win? They rocked and I can't find them anywhere online or otherwise. They were dark navy, black soles, red laces, white swoosh.
