WHAT WE THOUGHT: It has been quite the year for Prabal Gurung. One year into his eponymous label, he's already developed a huge celebrity following that includes Demi Moore, (front row fixture) Zoe Saldana, and Leighton Meester.
His spring collection earned raves from reviewers and earlier in the week, he celebrated his rising star award from the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund. During that breakfast he told StyleList that it symbolized a chance for him to "dare to dream bigger, an inch further than what I had done before."
At his first showing at the tents at Bryant Park, he did just that. With the Academy Awards around the corner, the handsome Nepalese newbie produced plenty of look-at-me red carpet staples. Among them were the double silk satin gowns with elaborate ruffles produced in black and white, the short and long forest green viscose dresses, and a feathery sleeveless frock with ostrich plumage.
Some of the show's other offerings including a super ruffled white poplin shirt and a mesh dress with layers of cascading silk gazar ruffles felt a little too frilly for our taste, but then again, we don't work in Hollywood.
