The makeup at the 2010 Oscars was, at times, predictable.

Red lips, smoky eyes -- all the usual suspects made an appearance on someone. But one of our favorite trends of the night was metallic makeup, which stars like Rachel McAdams, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Sarah Jessica Parker pulled off effortlessly.

Chanel makeup artist Kayleen McAdams (Rachel's sister!) did the star's makeup, which wowed us with its soft, natural finish -- something we don't often expect of metallic shades.

"We chose our colour palette based on the water colour look of Rachel's dress. There was a wash of cool tones in the dress -- blue, green, purple, pink, so we wanted the eye, cheek and lips to all have this same water colour sheerness to it," McAdams explained.

On the eyes, McAdams started with Chanel Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow in Fountain, an iridescent, shimmery lilac. She then used the rose gold shadow in the Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow compact in Spices to sweep from the lid to the brow bone.

Finally, McAdams used Chanel Soft Touch Eye Shadow in Slate along the inner corners of the eye for a subtle gray shimmer. The look was completed with two coats of black mascara, Chanel Rouge Coco Lip Color in Rose Comete, and a coat of Chanel Glossimer in Futile for a soft shimmer on the lip that wouldn't compete with the eyes.

Continuing the trend, Sarah Jessica Parker made her blue-green eyes stand out with some glittery plum liner along her upper and lower eye lids. Gyllenhaal went for an eye-popping copper look, courtesy of shu uemura pressed eye shadow in ME brown 860 and NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Skorpios.
