As predicted on StyleList by Phillip Bloch, Kathryn Bigelow took home the golden statue for Best Director -- and Best Picture for "The Hurt Locker," sparkling in a Edition Soir Yves Saint Laurent by Stefano Pilati titanium gown.
It was about time a woman made history by winning the coveted Best Director honor -- the day before International Women's Day, no less. But it was Bigelow's red Wounded EOD Warrior bracelet that added heart and meaning to her ensemble.
Sherri Beck, president of the Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation, tells StyleList it's "pretty awesome" that Bigelow wore the bracelet to the Academy Awards. But it's not the first time the director has been seen wearing it: it's been on her wrist at many award show ceremonies, including the Critics Choice Awards, Director's Guild of America Awards and the Hollywood Awards Gala.
Beck tells us that she personally gave bracelets from her organization to Bigelow and writer Mark Boal (who also won Oscar gold for best original screenplay) at a premiere last year of "The Hurt Locker" in Washington, D.C.
"I was able to attend and meet them and they were amazing people," Beck says.
The Wounded EOD Warrior Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides assistance to wounded Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians and their families in the form of financial relief. "The Hurt Locker" follows a team of EOD technicians in Iraq.
Beck says the bracelets are not currently available on the group's site, but that they are used to raise awareness, and are handed out and available for purchase for a small donation at the group's functions. "People put anything from $1 to $5 in a jar."
She adds that "The Hurt Locker" has helped give recognition to groups like Wounded EOD Warriors and the EOD Memorial Foundation, which, she says, pays tribute to those who died in the line of EOD duty.
"I think that there is a bit of excitement about [the Oscar wins]," Beck told us. "It wasn't a documentary, it is Hollywood, but I think they did a great job of depicting the danger and war in general.
"It's raising awareness of what the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team does. They're helping not only to save the lives of American soldiers, but also to save the lives of Iraqi civilians and others. We're very glad to help."
