Secrets to dressing skinny. Photo courtesy of Springboard Press

Wouldn't it be nice to always step out of the house looking your sveltest? Well, thanks to a new book by fashion and beauty expert Charla Krupp, you can do just that.

"How to Never Look Fat Again: Over 1,000 Ways to Dress Thinner -- Without Dieting!" is a no-holds-barred guide on camouflaging Buddha bellies, muffin tops, bat wings, cankles, big butts and thunder thighs.

Krupp, whose first book, "How Not to Look Old," remained on the New York Times best seller list for weeks, doesn't mince words when it comes to dishing out advice.

Her straightforward, honest approach combined with stellar tips makes her book a must-read for women of all shapes and sizes.

StyleList got a chance to talk to the author on the eve of her book launch.

StyleList: What are the most fattening clothes a woman can wear?
Charla Krupp:
Oversized T-shirts, drawstring pants, capri pants if you have cankles, sneakers with pants, sleeveless shirts for people who have arm flab, bright white gym shoes with tube socks, low-riding jeans for people with muffin top, wrap dresses if you have too much cleavage.

SL:
Has the way you dress changed since writing the book?
CK:
Yes, I realized I have so many clothes I need to get rid of. I put them on, and they don't make me feel good anymore. They're either too old or too baggy. I've made a lot of mistakes in my lifetime.

I love hot pink, but I shouldn't be wearing it in skirts. I have this Dolce & Gabbana python beaded-and-sequined skirt -- it's ridiculous! I can't wear all that embellishment on the lower half of my body.

I want less. I want fewer things; I want space in my closet!

SL: What are some ways that women can make their wardrobes less fattening on the cheap?
CK: Target has great things that are very of the moment. But even if you buy something trendy, you still have to be sure it makes you look good. I think the temptation for so many women is that they want to wear the trends, but the trends are not your friend. You really have to evaluate: Is it worth it to wear the trend? You have to rethink it.

If spice colors are in, then maybe an orange skirt isn't the answer for you. But an orange bag? Sure, why not. Or an orange cardigan sweater. You have to make sure you're not wearing a bright color on a place on your body that's going to make you look fat.

SL:
What nonfattening pieces should everyone have in her closet?
CK:
Everyone should have an amazing pair of jeans that makes your butt look good, a great black pencil skirt that really shows off your shape and the best pair of nude heels you can afford.

SL:
What spring trends are the most and least fattening?
CK:
Graphic-print dresses can be a little tricky. If you have a big butt, a Buddha belly or muffin top, pick a print that's not so busy. If the print has a black background, that's better. The cage shoe is tricky to wear if you're not crazy about your calves or your cankles. They really draw attention to your feet.

A solid A-line dress that really fits you well will look great. The pouf skirt, on the other hand, is a disaster on anybody who has fat thighs. The transparent trend is also a disaster -- who wants everyone to see what they're trying to hide?

SL: Which celebrities do the no-fat look well?
CK:
I think Sandra Bullock looks good. She wears a lot of belts around her waist. Demi Moore, she often wears knee-length dresses, which is very age appropriate. You have to dress for your age. Michelle Pfeiffer always looks good. Julia Roberts looks great.

SL:
What are your secret weapons in the fight against fat?
CK:
Shapewear is key. I love the new line from Spanx called Skinny Britches. The pieces are very feminine and pretty, so if you happen to flash a little shapewear when you're getting out of a cab, you won't be embarrassed. Sometimes I wear shapewear all the way up to the bra band. I never wear flimsy underwear.

I wear nude heels that blend into my skin tone and lengthen my legs. I use Revolotion from DuWop on my legs after I shave them -- I never wax, only shave! You want to look like you're wearing nylons, without actually wearing nylons.

"How to Never Look Fat Again" is now in stores and Charla Krupp will be making personal appearances across the country starting this Saturday, March 13, from 1-3 pm at Bloomingdale's 59th Street flagship store in New York City.

I disagree with the statement that oversized t-shirts
make any person fat. Sometimes t-shirts can shrink
in the wash cycles. Short undersized t-shirts reveal
belly areas I find after signfigant shrinking.

Not all t-shirts fit the same. I think what she is saying is not to wear oversize tees that stop midthigh. Those will make you look fat. They hug the butt bring attention to that area. I like my tees to stop just below the hip; a straight drop from the shoulders to the hip area. Try different brands to find the one that fits the best. As for shrinking, that is not much of an issue anymore. Most cloth is preshrunk before the garment is made, so I've been told. I don't trust that, lol, so I don't put any clothes in the dryer on any temperature.

Peace

The woman is talking about women who wear the big, boxy souvenier-type t-shirts that only come in unisex sizes. Too many women are walking around wearing those is size M or L. What they need to do is skip those boxy t-shirts altogether and only buy t-shirts that are made for women alone. Women's t's are found in all neck styles from jewel-neck to v-neck and all sleeve lengths too. Women with chubby arms should skip the sleeveless AND the cap-sleeves too which emphasize the widest part of their arm. You should buy short sleeves, elbow-length, bracelet or full-length sleeves. Women's t's are tapered at the waist slightly and skim the body, not boxy with room for a second person practically!
As to shrinkage....watch for fabric content. If it's 100% cotton, it's probably going to shrink somewhat. Don't dry the t-shirt completely, taking it out of the dryer when slightly damp and lay it flat to finish drying. This way you can even "block" it into shape. It's just taking good care of your clothes and not considering them as "throwaways".

It's not about BEING fat necessarily.....it's about LOOKING fat. When a women wears a giant boxy t-shirt in a "unisex" size, it IS going to make her look fatter or thicker than she really is. Women need to quit wearing all the "souvenier" type unisex-sized t-shirts. They hide your belly but make you look BIG in doing so.
There are good t-shirts for women that are made FOR her. Look for ones that are cotton-poly blends so they won't shrink. And if it's not long enough to cover your belly when you lift your arms, then walk away and find one that is.
And then start eating right and exercising so you can lose the fat and not spend time worrying if your clothes are making you look fat.

Just saying what's on my mind....I'm by no means an idiot. Just someone who obviously hit a nerve as far as you're concerned. Oh, and there's no particular way of dressing to hide hypersensitivity either.

Geez, do you think she could mention a celebrity that isn't a size zero?? This has nothing at all to do with real people. Sure, some good advice in general, but she has absolutely no idea what she is talking about. Someone the size of Sandra Bullock could wear a paper bag and make it look good.

Basically, FAT makes you look FAT....the clothes are just the icing on the cake.

I too think she could have sited celebs who aren't a size zero. How about Queen Latifah or the girl that's in Ugly Betty.

Clothes can make you look fat and even emphasize your fat areas. I work at Macy's occasionally in the junior dept. I have seen adult squeeze into clothes that are definately not made for their figure. Then they have the nerve to return it because the zipper broke or the seam ripped. Even young over weight teens try to fit in sizes that are too small - a medium instead of an extra large. There was a young girl who tried on a stretchy sleeveless dress, there were rolls of fat flowing out everywhere. It was sad. What was even sadder is that since she couldn't find a larger size she bought that one, a medium.

Urban wear is available at our store but only in the junior depart not the plus size. It's incredible how many plus size women will squeeze into a junior size.

I so much want to approach them and tell them to try another size or go to our tri-county store where they sell urban wear in plus sizes. But if someone asks for my opinion I will share it with them, gently so not to insult them.

But getting back to the original topic, Charla could have chosen more appropriate celebs to site example of dressing to hide flaws.

In my own opinion - horizontal stripes, puffy sleeves, stretchy tops and pants are all a big no no. Say yes to tops that do not hug the waist but touch the hips, pants that sit at the natural waist or just below the waist, go a size large if necessary on stretchy pants these will fit better at the waist.

I going to get off my soap box.

Peace

Funny! Size 0 today is yesterday's size 6. You'll find your REAL size if you go to any fabric store with your true measurements and find a sewing pattern that corresponds with those measurements.
Clothing manufacturer's changed sizing as we got larger to keep women in the stores buying clothes. I hear women say "I've ALWAYS been a size 6!" NO YOU HAVEN'T!
If you "were" a size 6 twenty years ago, then you would be a size 0 in today's sizes!
Thin women or those "in-shape" are going to be in sizes 0-2-4-6 (or sizes 4-12 in yesterday's sizes). If you are wearing a size larger than a 6, then you probably need to lose weight unless you are very large-boned (which most women aren't).

For Holly:

What are you, smoking crack? If you are bigger than a size 6 you need to loose weight? You must be one of those girls who are like 5'0" tall and look like a 10 year old. I am 5'10" and have always been in great shape. I have size 10 jeans from years ago that still fit, yet today have to buy a much bigger size and have them altered because of the low rise and tiny legs they cut. Anyone my size would look like an ethiopian refugee in a size 6.

It's a crime to be FAT in this country! If you're FAT, you're automatically stereotyped as lazy, ugly, and stupid. Clothing manufacturer's know that FAT people don't spend money on clothing, they spend it on food! And besides, you're already lazy, ugly and stupid, so we design the most hideous things we can and sell them to you at a premium price. You're so stupid, you buy them! No matter that there isn't any other choice! I once asked a clothing manufacturer why plus size clothes were so expensive. They told me it was because it took more material. That made sense a little, but then I asked, how come then baby and childrens clothing is just as expensive? You know, at first, I got no answer. Then finally one of them spoke up and said, "it's because they require the same amount of sewing". What a bunch of Bull Cookies!
If larger people were offered fashionable things such as the smaller people, maybe there wouldn't be so many fashion no-no's! But then again, if you're FAT, you're lazy, ugly, and stupid so you don't deserve it.
It is illegal in this country to discriminate against someone due to their race, religion, gender, or ethnic background. BUT, it is certainly legal to berate and discriminate against someone who is FAT because of course, not only are they lazy, ugly, and stupid, it's their fault they are the way they are! We accept that our maker created us in different colors, genders, heights, etc, but we can't wrap ourselves around the concept that we were also created in different sizes also!

golfinkatiekat77:

Larger folks aren't the only ones being berated. How many times have you heard someone make an anorexic comment about a thin person? I hear it ALL the time. But that's more socially acceptable than telling an overweight individual that he or she needs to stop eating so much, isn't it?

Tell a skinny gal that she needs to go eat a cheeseburger and you'll get all sorts of giggles and hoots. Tell a large gal that she needs to quit eating so many cheeseburgers and people will come out of the woodwork to tell you that "beauty is on the inside," or that "they prefer a REAL woman."

The way we all treat each other is sickening. Fat or skinny, we should respect each other and treat one another with at least a marginal amount of consideration.

I AGREE WITH YOU LADIES, this woman really must not have ever been heavy, and to have her pic on the front is an even bigger slap in the face. And who the hell wants to wear spanx? I've tried them and my body feels like it's having a blood pressure test. Now we all know how not to look fat, diet and excercise. But who the heck has time for that now a days. And it's really not that simple. Dieting and excercising take a long time, time we americans never seem to have. All our lives consist of is work work work just so we can make ends meet. Then you have the kids to tend to, then your home and by that time all you want to do is pass out. If she really wanted to sell her book she should have put a heavy lady on the front who was dressed well, maybe then I'd take her seriously.
