'Midnight Knitter' Covering New Jersey Town in Yarn

Looks like Granny's stitch-and-bitch is taking it to the streets.

The New Jersey town of Cape May has been thrown for a "loop" after an anonymous knitter embellished a local park's trees and lampposts with colorful knit garments, the Press of Atlantic City reports.

The knit sleeves (or leggings, if you like) started appearing in late February, and the sartorial stitch-up has townspeople on the hunt for the "midnight knitter," according to the paper.

"We don't know who it is," Mayor Pam Kaithern told the paper. "Technically, they shouldn't be doing it. The police are asking about it, but it's fun and it's a mystery."

This isn't the first time we've seen a case of renegade craftism; in 2007 we reported on Stockholm's illegal street knitting scene. (Now there' are four words we never thought we'd see in the same sentence again.)

Fortunately, most residents speaking to the paper seem to approve of the night knitting.

"I think they're actually going out and knitting in the middle of the night," local artist Diane Flanegan told the source. "That's weird and that's why people like it."

"It doesn't bother me," resident Jamie Smith added. "It's better than somebody spray painting all over the place."

Of course, the mystery may soon be unraveled; one resident told the paper that she knows some of the guerilla knitters, who reportedly receive yarn donations from a group of senior citizens.

Hey, they've gotta do something to liven up the ol' knitting circle.

I think this is a crazy & fun way to lighten up this lousy state & especially after the horrible winter we've been having....I saw this story on the news last nite & the guy who complained "it's private property" should grow a pair & stop whinning. I love it & it's not hurting anyone.

Hate to break it to those reporters, but that's not knitting. It's crochet. I can tell my the stitches. You can tell even better in the pictures from Stockholm.

If this was done in New York, it would be called art.

lol thats totaly awesome!!! i wish i could be part of the "night knitters" no harm being done just keeping the trees warm lol. I agree with laura, but no matter where it is its still a form of art and i think that these people should be recongnized for it...

It IS absolutely knitting....not crocheting, as one of the earlier writers suggested. Really dresses up the trees. And it gives senior citizens something harmless to do and keeps them out of trouble. I love it!!

YES IT IS KNITTING, I HAVE CROCHETED FOR YEARS AND HAVE TRIED TO LEARN TO KNIT. SO I JUST CROCHET AND THE MIDNITE KNITTERS ARE KNITTING. SOME KNITTING PATTERNS LOOK JUST LIKE CROCHET. WOW, LEAVE THEM BE, AT LEAST THEY AREN'T OUT DRINKING AND CAUSING MAYHEM. LET THEM HAVE THEIR FUN, IF I WAS A FEW YEARS YOUNGER I WOULD BE OUT WITH THEM. i WOULD BE IN CHARGE OF THE YARN SUPPLY SINCE I DON'T KNIT.....

What a beautiful sight! The colors, unusual use of yarn, JUST AMAZing....I wouldn't mind walking thru an entire forest of these pieces of creativity. An exhibit in a park ...HOW ABOUT Massachusetts???? are they coming here to do it? Who are they hurting. It is just a colorful, innocent BIG surprise for everyone. Hope it can continue and the creators get some credit or at least don't get hurt or in any trouble. The world is in such serious times that this is light hearted and fun for all.
I absolutely love it! cheers

I have been knitting all of my life and this person is brightening up the world with art and for the people who do not approve, obviously have no appreciation for any type of art and do not knit...There are worse things in the world than to promote beauty and craft. We live amongst so much negativity, violent and disturbing images and perceptions in our society and the fact that anyone would rather focus on that is very telling and extremely sad. Any knitter or other type of artist will completely understand this.....

They are not knitting all night, they are knitting and then sewing the seams together to get them on the tree, none of this looks like knitting in the round. The link to the one is Sweden is a picture of a crocheted band.
But it still is a fun looking idea as long as they remember to pick it up when it gets old and raggedy and they don't let birds pick it up as the yarn can retain moisture and lead to mould in birds nest killing off the little ones.

Waste of yarn. Maybe it is fun, but those senior citizens could put their craft to good use knitting blankets, sweaters and socks for the homeless shelters.
