Proving the catwalk is treacherous, an "
America's Next Top Model" contestant fell not once, but twice -- the second time getting smacked off the runway by a giant, swinging pendulum!
Descending a magnificent staircase in a golden one-shoulder
Rachel Roy gown, Tennessee model Alexandra -- one of cycle 14's plus-size competitors -- crashed and slid to her knees. Her dress and knee badly gashed, she proceeded to the runway with a steely "I mean business" gaze, only to be catapulted off the catwalk by a large pendulum (a prop for the show).
Alexandra pulled herself back onto the stage, tore the train off her dress in a dramatic flourish that seemed scripted (it wasn't!), and strutted off, displaying tears only when she arrived backstage.
Despite her unsteadiness, the 21-year-old's grace under pressure impressed the show's runway coach,
Miss J. Alexander, and
Roy, who was in the front row to witness the drama.
After giving the young model a dressing down for looking angry after her first fall, the experts later gave her props for keeping it together. Um, we think she deserved a standing ovation for her glamazon-like efforts.
Alexandra, to her credit, seemed most upset that her "beautiful dress" was ruined. Her can-do attitude later held her in good esteem with the judges, including this season's new edition,
Vogue Editor-at-Large
André Leon Talley.
Alexandra wasn't even on the chopping block when it came time for the "
ANTM" judges, which included
Roy in a guest role, to consider who would be cut from the competition this week.
That distinction went to the deliberately
bald model, Naduah, who
Talley declared "
dreckitude." Earlier in the night, the judges also eliminated Gabrielle, an 18-year-old from California.
