Our closets are about to get a first lady-worthy update... for a fraction of the cost.

Fashion designer Isabel Toledo -- who designed Michelle Obama's lemongrass-hued Inauguration day ensemble -- is partnering with Payless ShoeSource on a line of cheap-chic handbags and shoes for fall.

Now that's the kind of wardrobe reform this country needs!

The Isabel Toledo for Payless line is set to debut this September and will average about $40 an item. Our accountant is beside himself.

Early buzz on the line suggests a "strong shape, fabric and textural focus with a mix of materials such as patent, nylon, rubber and mesh," Payless says in a statement.

"I believe that the freedom of wearing and living in high-low fashion is what pure American styling is all about," Toledo says in a press release. "I grew up wearing high-end clothes and pairing them with innovative, functional and affordable items to complete a look.

"For me, fashion is personal and intimate, I love the unexpected, and I am truly excited to join Payless in its continuous mission to democratize fashion. As a fashion designer, I focus on the consumer to create designs that are meaningful, inventive and very functional.

"Shoes must be flattering and wearable, and I am thrilled to collaborate with Payless to create something new and fresh for all women through my new Payless shoe line."

You and us both, girlfriend.

"Isabel is a fashion icon and has been a guiding force in fashion for more than 25 years," says LuAnn Via, CEO of Payless, which has partnered with designers like Christian Siriano in the past.

"Her pieces are truly iconic and have been worn by everybody from first ladies to movie stars; she has been awarded the fashion industry's most prestigious awards, written books and been featured in fashion retrospectives in museums across the globe.

"We are beyond thrilled by this collaboration and eager to work with Isabel to bring inventive new designs to our shoppers starting this fall."

Future seasonal collections are said to be forthcoming as well -- just the kind of news to put a spring in our step.

Meanwhile, read about another a stylish collaboration between this top design duo and the Material Girl.

I have stopped shopping at Payless. They no longer partner with the non-profit that I volunteer for and the reason I started shopping there to begin with.

Stands to reason that Michele's dress designer would go where she is best suited - a cheap, discount house, lower income targeted retail outlet. But I guess she was big in Chicago - where Wendy Restaurants are give four and five star ratings.

Great, now there will be a Payless Czar position created and a bazillion dollar bailout of Payless. Dressing that plow mule Mrs. Omambo more nearly qualifies her to design at Tractor Supply Company.

I'll bet ole isabel is just proud as punch. Every designers dream......to team up with "Payless". Not Neimen or Christie et al. .........PAYLESS. I guess the first lady is no better at chosing designers than her husband is at picking staff or priorities. GOD HELP US!!!!!!

Setting aside the nauseating racist comments here... Isabel Toledo is a phenomenal designer and though I'm glad that her aesthetic will get a wider audience, I hope a company with the ability to make a significant investment will support her higher-end work! Her sense of color, her unexpected shapes / patterns / volumes and beautiful workmanship are outstanding. Viva Toledo!!

Yeah, and the other day I saw a photo of Michelle Obama in a pair of $700.00 flats while the country is realing in this economy. Perhaps Isabel can encourage her to shop at Payless next time. Or better yet, the nearest blacksmith shop!!!

I shop at payless. I have noticed recently that their prices are no longer the lowest. Any way people used to ask me why I shop there. Now they shop there too. If I was playing sports or walked all day I would get shows that are more durable (payless uses glue sometimes when the more expensive shoes use thread) but my shoes don't take a beating so if they look good that is good enough. I know people that wear designer shoes and clothes that sit at home while I have the money to travel and enjoy life. I have traveled the world in my payless shoes.

When it comes to other clothes I don't buy cheap but I don't buy designer either. I bought a cheap shirt when I was a teen ager and my father told me buying cheap shirts end up costing you more. The cheap shirt I bought I only wore once. When my mother washed it, it lost its shape the thread broke and the pocket fell off. This was in 1972 and the shirt cost $5.00. I learned my lesson. Mid price like Sears sells is the best. A quality shirt in a timeless style will last a life time and is actually cheaper in the long run. Cheap shoes can hurt your feet. Payless shoes are not great but they are good enough.

Cheap shoes are cheap shoes and they are very bad for your feet. If Isabellas shoes look anything like that frightful "lemongrass ensemble" God help Payless buyers.

It is so refreshing to know that hateful and ugly spirited animals like yourselves (with brains the size of peas) will be judged by God. He knows all and his wrath is what you all will come to know. Keep up the good work haters!!! LOL

What is the matter with you people??? That is still the First Lady of the United States - Show respect for her position - no matter what her race is! You are digusting racist pigs!!! You can't point to something she has done that you don't agree with - all your comments are simply stereotypes about the color of her skin! You are just what is the worst about this sountry - have some civility - you should be ashamed of yourselves!
