Ben de Lisi Gives UK Hospital Gowns a Designer Makeover

Looks like America isn't the only country engaged in a little health care reform.

The UK has unveiled a new hospital gown designed by Ben de Lisi to replace those embarrassing backless numbers, the Daily Mail reports.

Call it sick chic.

Instead of the traditional, plain, shapeless garment that's split in the back to reveal your dingy granny panties (or much, much worse), the new closed-back gowns come in a striped print and boast snaps at the side (eliminating indecent exposure), a pouch for mobile phones (which will surely be confiscated by your nurse) and a "pashmina-style" blanket accessory, according to the paper.

Available in blue and white stripes or blue, taupe and white stripes, the unisex gowns also reportedly come with cropped pajama bottoms, panel inserts for large patients, a drawstring back and a reversible option that lets you switch it from V-neck to scoop-neck.

And don't forget the designer label. We feel a temperature coming on already!

"The old hospital gown is hideous," de Lisi told the Daily Mail. "When you're waiting for an operation you need to remain confident. You can't possibly be confident when your arse is hanging out of your clothes for everyone to see.

"I wouldn't want my mother to be seen in one; why should I expect anyone else's mother to have to wear one?"

De Lisi, who counts Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz among his celebrity fans, reportedly designed the gowns as part of a new collaboration between the UK's NHS (National Health Service) and the Design Council.

Launched as part of a Patient Dignity program, the gowns will be road-tested in select UK hospitals before potentially hitting all national hospitals next year, the paper reports.

Fingers crossed!

Meanwhile, check out Ben de Lisi's ad campaign starring a disabled model.

Wow, if only our US hospitals could get a shipment! Great to hear about a designer's effort to be down-to-earth and think about less-glam garments we all have to face sometime. And it sounds like he really considered all the practical uses and needs the medical staff and patients would have. Kind of look like djellabas...

While I agree that we need more privacy when walking the halls of a hospital, etc., there is a functional purpose to the backless gown. Not all functions or procedures a doctor or nurse performs can be done with "dressed" back. And if we have to pull the back of the gown up so we're not sitting on it in order to open it on the sides, then we're back to square one! Something to think about!

I live in the UK. New gowns should not be the NHS's priority. Unless, of course, they use the old ones to actually clean the hospitals...

You shouldnt have to pull it up, the sides snaps will work just fine...unsnap them from the side and just pull the gown over. The doctor will have access to all parts "down under" just like if he had the flap open from the back...

Many are quick to point out the problems with the healthcare systems of European countries. But, one, inescapable fact is, they must be doing something right because NOBODY immigrates from Western Europe anymore. When I say "immigrate" I'm talking about the traditional immigrant who comes here with an eye towards naturalization. Western Europeans come here to go to school, work or start businesses but few are interested in becoming U.S. citizens. To me, a true barometer of how bad things are in any country is their citizen's willingness to become citizens of another. That is why today's immigrants are primarily from South America and Africa where things are REALLY bad!

how rediculous. Really....that's our concern? FASHION IN HOSPITALS?!??! And as a nurse, I can say that it is a bad idea. We need the back open, the ARMS with snaps, and a tie around neck. Think about how immobile, incontinent really sick people are!!! Not to mention tubes and IV lines...Gimmie a BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paula: It stands to reason that a person who is bed ridden or has limited mobility does not require to be as dressed as those who are ambulatory. As a nurse, you know that many patients are actually encouraged to walk around if they can both to preserve their sanity and speed their recovery. For these patients, a backless gown is hardly necessary.

I guess the Designer is a bit bored or running out of ideas that start as a "creative drawing" on a piece of paper, fabric, etc.. that he is resorting to minipulating hospital gowns.
Gee wiz! I can do that too! In fact, I have created dresses, tunics, etc. from nightgowns, etc...
He gets recognized because he is a Designer! WOW!
Would I wear it? Sure, if I were in a hospital bed.

Paula- I totally agree. Nothing like trying to already take care of pts on many Iv drips and lines for monitoring, now we have to worry about if they like the gown ?? If you are sick then deal with the gown. we need instant access to everywhere on a patient in the er. maybe these New gowns will be good for "elective " procedures.. but not in everyday true hospital needs..... (next the will bill you for dry cleaning the expensive new gown too...)

I never understood how the back of the gown being open helped anyone for anything!
All of my hospital visits were for frontal problems...heart, tummy, etc. Try to adjust to the wire and tubes attached to you when they are all hanging out over the front of the gown. It is absolutely a pain in the "open part" of the old gowns. I am annoyed that if and when I have gone to get xrays and so forth these are what are used and here. We all together, men and women sit out in the waiting room to be called in. I personally refuse to sit out with the men minus my undergarments. To all the people in the hospital we are just "meat" to be moved around, but the fact is I will not parade around in front of strangers in less clothing than I would walk outside my house wearing. And I might add there are far more of the old gowns used on a daily basis by people that are not admitted than those that are. I think it would be a great idea if these folks working in the health care system had to spend a week in the hospital getting the feel of the treatment they hand out. I have had some truly wonderful care givers but then again I have left the hospital more than once A.M.A. because of really poor treatment.

Just one correction - most UK hospitals allow patients and visitors to carry and use mobile phones, except for very sensitive areas such as radiology.

Nice outfit!, but too bad people have to wait for up to a year to get into hospital to be able to use this new 'fashion statement'. The wait to get into a hospital, regardless of what your ailment is outrageous in the U.k. Trying to get a diagnosis (prior to going in) is even worse.
Well folks - look forward to that kind of insanity here also due to the recently 'passed'
health care bill or should I say the 'passed because of perks to lawmakers States Bill'. See what we have to look forward to,

Forget this design, there is one available in the US that is far superior than this. It's called DIGNITYWEAR, which consist of two piece suit either in warm up or pajama design. Has complete accessibility for nursing needs, much more dignified than gowns. Who in his/her right mind considers wearing gown in public or during visiting hours while being hospitalized is beyond me. See the design: www.dignitywearcollection.com. Every hospital should carry it.

First, hospitals are the very last place fashion should be an issue. Second, like one person stated, there are reasons gowns are made the way they are, easy access! Third, I could'nt care less who sees my ass or anything else if I am waiting to see a doctor or get a procedure. Last, this designer and all the others live in some fantasy world that excludes the people who actually do something constructive for the world they live in, the real world. What a joke!

Wow, I didn't think they could afford hospital gowns. My husband was in the hospital for 8 days in UK after suffering a heart attack while we were on vacation. VERY FRIGHTENING experience that socialized medicine. He laid in his jeans for 4 days until I could get back to hotel to get sweats (no hospital gown provided), no cardiologist (seen by doctor of infectious disease), was given a clot busting medication that had not been used in this country in over 25 years, no potable water on cardiac floor, doctors did not wear rubber gloves between patients (they cost money), they reuse pill cups (they cost money), asked if we brought our own toilet paper when he asked for a toilet to go to the bathroom, the list goes on and on. This is where we are headed with Obamacare make no mistakes about it.
