How to Get Great Hair...In Bed!

Get great waves like Sarah Jessica Parker's, while you sleep! Photo: Getty Images

Love long, soft, wavy hair like Sarah Jessica Parker's? The great thing about her look is you can get it while you sleep.

That's right.

By following a simple bedtime routine, your shut-eye can turn into some serious beauty sleep.

According to the folks at hairboutique.com, creating great morning hair starts with a good cleansing the night before. Here are their tips:

1. Wash hair as you normally would with your regular products.
2. Apply a rinse out conditioner.
3. Finish with a cool/cold water rinse.
4. Towel blot.
5. Apply leave-in conditioner.
6. Detangle hair gently from the ends up to the roots.
7. Create desired part and/or fringe sections and arrange hair the way you normally wear it.
8. Allowing for where you wish to create waves, separate strands into individual 2" sections.
9. Gently twist hair into a clockwise direction until the hair is completely twisted (the tighter you twist, the tighter the resulting waves). You can also braid your hair or put it in a ballerina bun for a different wave pattern.
10. Tuck the end of the twisted strand under at the base of the twist and secure with elastics.
11. Go to bed and allow hair to dry naturally overnight.
12. The next morning, carefully remove the elastics.
13. Use fingers to pick out waves and arrange as desired (do not brush it or the waves will come out).

Stylist Heather O'Malley at Salon Vanity in Philadelphia tells StyleList that waking up with great hair depends a lot on the type of product used. "Bedhead really works for those lucky enough to have a natural soft curl. After waking, they only need to scrunch their curls into place with a bit of product. For those with a shorter, edgier, spikier style, it looks great with some product in it from the night before."

O'Malley also says styling your locks while you sleep creates a modern look. "It is the iconic carefree, fun and casual look but it has to be deliberate," she says. "It can be incredibly versatile depending on the style and texture of the hair, and it can range from romantic/bohemian to punk/goth."

Try it! Creating your style overnight will not only save your hair from over-processing with a blow dryer, it will save you valuable time in the morning -- and we could all use a few extra minutes before that alarm goes off!

Know who else is wearing long, wavy hair? Take a look.

This hair solution would only work if you have thin hair. Go to bed with long or thick hair bound up? Ugh?! Your hair will smell sour or mildewy- not clean at all, and may even still be damp in the morning-no waves! !

I have thick, curly hair. I go to bed with wet hair all the time to save time in the morning. I have never gotten up with sour or mildewy hair. If you do then you'd better put on some clean sheets. Or, see a doctor.

I have thick hair and am doing this now! Just make sure your hair isn't super wet if you have thick hair otherwise it won't hold.

I have naturally thick, long, wavy/ curly hair. I have done this many times where I would take a shower, after shower put in leave in conditioner, and hair detangler. Then I would seperate my hair into sections of four or five depending how big I wanted my waves. Tie hair ties to the scalp of my hair for each section, braid ech section then ties the ends with another hair tie and curl the end into the hair tie. I would leave overnight, take out after Im done doing make up and all morning routine. Then I would spray with a little leave in conditioner so it wont frizz up.I do this to my hair if I want a more smoother look of curls. My hair isnt damp when I take out my braids only if you do it early enough at night to give it time to dry. And my hair doesnt smell like mildew either as long as you use the right products for your hair. I have been doing this for years to get a wild, fun sexy curl look. I have also gotten many compliments on it and my husband absolutely loves it. I would recommend everyone trying this at least once. ☺

I am an old girl of 62,,, so I just go to bed and wallow all over the bed with my hair just like it is. It is white-white and straight and cut in layers. When I get up in the morning it is usually standing straight up. My poodle looks at me and laughs. That is when I take a shower and use volumizing shampoo. I blow my hair dry and use a little volumizer on it.. I never touch it with a curling iron. I think it looks pretty good for an old girl like me. It is about shoulder length now.. but needs to be trimmed. I used to go to bed with wet hair, but it always made me get SICK with sinus headaches. Well, that is my take on it if anyone cares.. We old girls like to look good too you know. Everybody out in cyberland is not 30 years old with no wrinkles and perky boobs.

Fix your sinus problems naturally...Use a neti pot (Rhino Horn is my fave kind). For this old girl, it has been life-changing!

I have shoulder length hair that is soft wavy and not very thick or coarse and this idea is perfect for my hair and is similar to how I do my own.
Shower at night, comb out, a little gel, then starting at the back, I make sections and twist them up and hold them in one hand. Once they are all twisted, I put all the sections in one elastic and stick all the ends into the elsactic to keep any from unravelling. in the moring, it can still be a little damp-if so, I will use the blow dryer w/ diffuser attachment on low for a few minutes. Then pull out the elastic and scruch it up w/ a little gel on wet fingers and sort of fluff it and finger comb it and then a bit of hair spray.
I get tons of compliments on my hair and remarks about how long it must take to which I laugh and say it is worth every second, because seriously a few seconds is all it takes. I am a low maintenaince type but like to look polished and put together. Hair in under a minute and make-up that averages 6 minutes-I have it all down to a science at this point in my mid-40s!

If I go to bed with a wet head I wake up with a stiff neck!

I have fine long (mid-back) hair that is wavy in summer when the air is humid and straight through the winter. But I find if I put it in a pony tail before bed even without it being wet, there is enough wave to look styled. Coil the pony tail with pins and I get more waves. Very simple really.

I must be the only one who sleeps weird. If I do this my bangs are trying to do their own thing and sticking out everywhere. Then my right side and back of my head are completely flat. The only thing that works for me is letting my hair dry 80% of the way naturally wrapped in a dry towel. Then blow drying it a little to add volume. Then i just curl it a little. I'll wake up and shower and then hope back in bed for and hour to let it dry. So when I wake up it only takes me 30 minutes tops to finish getting ready.

You should never tie your hair up while it is wet. Your hair has the ability to stretch and bounce back by about 20%. If you tie your hair up while it is wet..as it dries it tries to shrink back and it is unable to because of the tension that is in the hair. You may not have frizz in the morning..but over time you will have a frizz ball for hair because of all the breakage.

From a man's point of view: I don't know if it works or not. I love the way Sarah Jessica's hair looks but I would not want to try to snuggle up to someone with wet conditioner and elastic bands in their hair. I love long, soft, silky hair that I can sleep next to. This is strictly my point of view, but speaking from a man's perspective, I know a lot of other men who feel the same as I do.
