New York-based accessories designer Rafe Totengco launched his eponymous business in 1995 with a handbag collection. Since then his label has expanded to include shoes and leather goods that are all the rage from Richmond to Rome, Hawaii to Hong Kong. The CFDA-member was also the first accessories designer to kick off the capsule collection craze for Target back in 2005. Here he offers his thoughts on the trends for the spring season and his own creative inspiration.

What are the most important trends for Spring 2010 in terms of shoes?
This spring wooden platforms and clogs are making a major comeback, whether they're covered up or strappy. Espadrilles and wedges are embellished with wooden beads and have exotic flair.

What about for Spring 2010 handbags?
Rivets, studs, grommets, nail heads and any kind of rock n' roll reference remain strong but another trend that is emerging is exotic tribalism. There are Ikat weaves, batik prints, and even hippie tie dye effects.

What is your best-selller for spring so far?
The "Isla" Riveted Leather large tote and the "Karolina" Beaded Ikat clutch. Both styles represent my point of view as a designer. I love incorporating handcrafted details, color, and a bit of embellishment in my designs. I try to have a 'wow' factor in whatever I do.

What inspired your spring collection?
This season I was inspired by the easy-breezy bohemian sensibilities of the girls in LA. I was also inspired by all the Ikat textiles I saw while I was in Bali and was fortunate enough to work with the Tiboli tribe in the Philippines to create similar patterns.

The Tiboli tribe did the weaving for my Ikat clutches. They live in the southern most part of the Philippines and have been weaving these patterns for centuries. Their knowledge and skills have been passed down through generations.

What other designer's accessories are admiring this season?
I'm loving Dries Van Noten and Marni's neck pieces. Also I loved the cuffs with geometric stones that Matthew Williamson did for Swarovski. They are modern, graphic and bold. Fenton-Fallon's Dana Lorenz (who is a recent CFDA Award nominee) has a talent for mixing elements together - like snakeskin, chains, semi-precious stones and rhinestones. The end result looks effortless but with a downtown vibe.
