Homemade hair treatments does your 'do -- and the planet -- good. Courtesy Photo

With Earth Day right around the corner, what better tribute to Mother Nature -- and your wallet -- than some DIY, eco-friendly hair treatments?

"Making your own products are super simple -- it is a lot like cooking," Lauren and Janice Cox, authors of "EcoBeauty -- Scrubs, Rubs, Masks, and Bath Bombs for You and Your Friends," told StyleList.

"If you have extremely dry hair you can whip up an all natural hair conditioning pack when you need it," adds Lauren.

"You can also customize your hair care products to what you need -- if your haır is dry add a bit more oil, oily add some lemon juice, damaged try honey. Many of the treatments and recipes have been used for years such as olive oil as a hair conditioner or lemon juice as a rinse to cleanse and refresh."

Not only do homemade, eco-friendly beauty products use all natural ingredients with no animal testing, it's a great way to reuse ingredients from the kitchen and recycle packaging. You can also save a boatload of cash. "You can make for pennies what you spend dollars on in the store," she says.

The most important thing to keep in mind when masterminding your own products? "Keep it simple," says Lauren. "When it comes to hair care and natural beauty, less really is more."

Here are a few of their favorite homemade recipes to soothe your tattered tresses:

Basic Shampoo
This is a great basic shampoo for all hair types. If you hair is oily, omit the optional vegetable oil, but if your hair is dry or damaged, you should definitely include it. This shampoo is gentle on hair and won't strip away its natural oils, so it will help keep it healthy and shiny.

Ingredients:
1 /2 cup water
1 /2 cup mild liquid soap (try castile made from olive oil)
1 /2 teaspoon light vegetable oil

Directions:
Gently stir all of the ingredients together, being careful not to beat the mixture, as this will cause it to foam up. Pour the shampoo into a clean squeeze bottle or plastic container. To use, shampoo as you normally would, then rinse well with cool water.

Refreshing Mint Hair Rinse
If you're in need of a refreshing pick-me-up for dull, limp locks, this rinse will do the trick. Together, the mint tea and vinegar will get your scalp really clean and leave your hair fresh and shiny. Mint is naturally energizing and will give your scalp a tingly, fresh feeling, and the vinegar will rid your hair of any residue from styling gels or soap based shampoos.

Ingredients:
1 /2 cup boiling water
1 to 2 mint tea bags
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Directions:
Pour the boiling water over the tea bag and let it steep until cool. Remove the tea bag, pressing it to extract as much tea as possible, then stir in the vinegar. To use, shampoo and condition your hair as usual then apply the entire mixture to your hair. Massage it into your scalp and work it through your hair, then dry your hair as you normally would, without rinsing it out.

911 Hair Rescue Mask
This great hair conditioning mask for repairing dry, damaged hair is especially good if you use a lot high-heat styling tools, such as a blow dryer or straightening iron. It will help revive lackluster hair, from your scalp to the ends of your hair.

Ingredients:
1 /2 cup plain yogurt
2 tablespoons light olive oil
3 to 4 drops essential oil of peppermint or 1 sprig of fresh mint
1 to 2 drops essential oil of rosemary or 1 sprig fresh rosemary

Directions:
Put all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until you have a smooth mixture. To use, first shampoo your hair, then apply the entire mixture and massage it into your hair and scalp. Put on a shower cap or wrap your hair in an old towel and leave the mixture on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse well with warm water and style as usual.

While the results of these hair treatments will be "amazing", says Cox, "they may feel a bit different from the commercial products you are used to using. In other words, your homemade shampoo may not be as foamy or your conditioner may feel a bit thicker."

I'm usually willing to try making stuff from scratch. If you didn't start your story out with that "mother earth" BS, I may have read further and tried this garbage. Normal people do not worship the Earth. But I guess this means you literally worship the ground I walk on. I'm flattered.

I have to laugh when I see shampoo commercials promising all kinds of wonderful things for a head of hair. I've used dishwashing liquid, laundry liquid and even hand soap on my hair... it looks great! Shampooing is not about lining the pocksts of the manufacturers .. it's about washing away a day's dirt. That easy and that complicated. As long as the hair is lathered and rinsed .. you are good to go!

The only problem with olive oil or any oil is that is CAUSES dandruff. Dishwashing liquid is too harsh. You're better off using regular shampoo.

I have been using the Dermology Anti-Aging Solution ( http://tiny.cc/Dermology ) for over 5 months now and have seen a great improvement in my skin's appearance. The lines in my forehead are not as deep as they were prior to using this product. My skin feels firmer and looks fresher when I wake up in the morning. And I think the more you use this product the better your skin looks. I tried the eye cream and just loved it! I have tried more expensive brands and did not see the results that I got from it. For anyone that wants a great product that diminishes the lines in the eye area and feels great all day, I suggest you try the eye cream. For me it truly gives a more youthful appearance....

I buy shampoo for the smell, not just for washing. What am I to tell any girls, that I just got finished cooking?.......Besides, shampoo is cheaper than the ingredients that are listed. Good for salad, NOT for hair.

John, Most shampoos are NOT cheaper than this. You can buy 32 oz liquid Castile soap at Target for approximately $13.50. The formula given here calls for 4 oz of soap. You get 8, 8 oz of shampoo from one bottle of Castile. The castile is scented with lavendar or almond (guess sweet, cherry like scent of the almond will still smell like a kitchen LOL). And you get double duty from this formula since it is a head to toe body shampoo. Mild, non detergent, and lightly scented. Look at all the added ingredients to your store bought shampoo, including color dye. I am definitely going to Target for Castile (wonder if WalMart has it, they are closer).

Castile soap is also a great substitute (instead of using expensive Woolite) for washing your wool or delicate clothing. It does just as good a job. I've used it for years. Rinses out nice and clean too. This is one substitute that is as good as the original. Don't be afraid to try it.

John,
I agree with you about shampoo being cheaper than castile. Most shampoos we purchase on special are under $1.00 for 12 to 16 oz or more compared to $1.75 for only 8 oz as indicated by Nancy.

I agree shampoo is cheaper and does a better job with a better scent. The soap oil and a bottle to mix it in will cost 2 to 3 times the cost of regular shampoo. Not sure where Nancy shops but at most shampoo I buy is like $4 for a big bottle of a name brand. Standard shampoo like herbal essence is like $1.56 at wal mart in Chicago

Actually, Preparation H IS used for face problems!! All Prep H does is reduce enflamed skin. There's nothing wrong with using it on your face and it works wonders.

Uuuuhhhhh
And you want to "MAKE" your own shampoo with dish soap and vegetable (something, I assume it's oil) when your can BUY another bottle for $2.00 at Wally World??
Thanks for the ridiculous suggestion.
Oh...and if you are really out of shampoo and desperate.
Try the dog/s shampoo.
It works great.

No kidding!!! I Googled castille liquid soap and found I could buy it for $7.99 for a 17 oz. bottle. So I am going to replace my 99 cent Suave for that??? Duh!

I also Googled and found the first link to be Target. You can buy a 32 oz bottle of liquid Castile soap for $13.69. Since the recipe/formula given in the article says to use 1/2 cup (4 oz) that means you get 8, 8oz bottles of shampoo from 1 bottle of Castile. Approximate cost of this 8 oz bottle of the "make your own shampoo" is $1.75 PLUS it is a hair and body wash, so you get double usage. Another PLUS, it comes scented in lavendar or almond (as well as a baby formula (unscented?)). Castile will be much better for my treated hair (color and highlights) and as soon as I run out of shampoo, I am buying Castile.

This article is assuming that you actually buy quality hair products at beauty supply stores. Shampoo can be expensive, and especially conditioner, if you buy a quality product. Suave is not a decent shampoo; it's got TONS of alcohol in it. I wouldn't use it on my dog.

We use our people shampoo on our golden retriever and he is gorgeous, silky and shiny. Dog shampoo seemed to dry our his coat too much and mostly did not smell very good. Plus it is a lot more expensive. Dr. Bonners castile soap works well too in the almond (the pepperment smells fantastic but can be a little irritating).

This is just a bunch of who-ha... Just replace your shampoo with liquid castile soap.
