Katharine McPhee is back to brown!

After shocking the world last August by dying her locks platinum blonde for her second album, Unbroken, the pop singer made the switch back to brunette reportedly for a new gig.

Set to play a pharmaceutical representative in the NBC comedy pilot "The Pink House," McPhee told People Magazine, "It's always nice to have a reason to go back."

And what a much needed hair transformation.

We're all for trying something new, but McPhee's blonde strands made her look ghostly, while this rich shade adds warmth to her complexion and brings out her eye color.

We can go on and on about what extreme hair coloring can do to your locks, but McPhee sums it up by admitting, "Blonde was pretty hard on my hair. I guess my hair is thanking me now!"

What do you think of McPhee's new brown 'do? Do you prefer her as a blonde or a brunette?

Leave a comment and check out the gallery below for more celebs who've gone to the dark side.

Katharine McPhee turned heads last summer when she died her locks platinum blonde for her second album, Unbroken. But the "American Idol" alum is back to brown this spring with a rich shade that warms up her milky complexion.

Nicole Richie has been gradually darkening her honey blonde locks for a while, but she officially went back to brunette at the launch of her House of Harlow holiday collection.

Previously platinum-streaked singer Aubrey O'Day posted this picture of a new darker 'do on her Twitter page and asserted, "brunettes have more fun!"

Jenna Bush posed for this photo on July 23rd with newly-darkened hair. We actually prefer the warm brown over her formerly over-processed blond. It looks shinier and healthier already!

Katherine Heigl debuted reddish-brown locks at the Hollywood premiere of "The Ugly Truth" on July 16. Are you loving the actress's brunette 'do? Should she return to her classic blonde hair?

Brown Hair Flipbook

Surprise! Paris Hilton's new dark 'do is just a wig. She sported the disguise as a gag for the new season of Paris Hilton's My New BFF on MTV. Wonder if she used Christina Aguilera's "Dirty" years as an inspiration?

Brown Hair Flipbook

Golden girl Kate Hudson was spotted with a new brunette 'do on May 21st. The medium brown shade was likely for her upcoming film, The Killer Inside Me.

Fergie traded her dark blonde locks for this seriously slick shade of chocolate brown, with mahogany highlights.

Sarah Jessica Parker was seen on strolling the New York City streets sporting tussled chocolate tresses. SJP may be enjoying her last few months of "normalcy" before rejoining her sassy gang to begin shooting part two of Sex and the City this summer.

What do you think of SJP's new look? Are you feeling the brown hair? Should she return to her iconic wavy gold strands?

I completely agree with charleevee, dysphoriavii, and Chris. Her hair was so beautiful in Over It. She should just stay natural and be herself. She looks so pretty natural. Katharine, you look so pretty with your natural dark long hair. Stay natural girl. Natural is how God intended you to be and you look better that way (in my opinion), so you go girl!

She looks so much better! I agree with one of the previous comments, she should grow it back out. It made her look special. I think she looks a little more plain with this hair cut.

Stay with the color you were born with. It's part of your genetics. Anything else looks phoney.

I love her hair brown, and I hope she lets it grow again! The longer hair looked very good on her. She has a beautiful face and her hair was a crowning glory till she messed with it....glad that blond yuck is gone!!!! Hope she does well with the TV gig!

Honestly, who cares about this woman? I log on every once in awhile, and here we have what is essentially no better than a bar singer presented like she's some great talent. She is also no great beauty. She is someone in the industry's daughter, who was pushed, who didn't truly 'make it'. Then she marries a December Groom, who is also in the business, and she's still not 'made it'. She's no big deal, people, nothing to see here, move along. Americans know what they like, and if she were truly talented, she would have made far more progress than she has to date. She is apparently the darling of AOL. It's the only outlet I see who still pushes her.

I know, I'll get blasted for posting, but sometimes something just needs a comment.

She has a great voice and so what if she married someone older than herself? I've been married to a man who is 20 years older than me and we've been happily married for 30 years.

Katie, you miss the gist of the post. She has done everything she can to capitalize off of someone else's industry connections and it hasn't done her a bit of good. Detailing the course of her efforts has nothing to do with condemning a marriage, etc. It just details her efforts.

Wow, Katie, Not made it? She's sung with Bocelli, Botti, Foster, Lionel Richie and she's been in The House Bunny movie, appeared on 3 TV shows, and is starring in another movie out this summer/fall. Just sang at the White House for the President and his wife. Yeah right, she hasn't accomplished anything !

I bet she has more money in the bank than you do!

Hey Mar - Every single dime I have made (and it's considerable) has been from my own efforts - not riding on anyone's coat tails and definitely not being a cry baby. No, she hasn't 'made it'. Not by a long shot. The majority of her success is in public appearances and B list endeavors. (Go to imbd - her list is far from impressive). She is a B/C list actress/singer. In other words, no big deal. Email me 5 years from now. I bet I will still own my company, etc., when she's crying about how she could have been a contender if Simon hadn't been so mean to her on Idol!

Oh, and money? The majority of the multi-millionaires in this country have nothing to do with sports of show business. Wink wink.

Yup....Brunette is the way to go for her. Blonde just kind of took away her cuteness factor. I mean sure she was good looking, but the world has too many good looking blondes, I like a warm smile on a brunette much more than the sharp cold stare of a blonde. Yeah...you know what I mean.

kinda unrelated to the specific article, but related to the brunette flipbook. So many blonde celebrities who go dark (and vice versa) don't know how to compensate for the change. A hair cut or style that works on you when you have one hair color won't necessary compliment you when you change the color. Good examples are Katherine Heigl and Scarlett Johannson. The harsh bombshell hairdos they rocked as blondes don't flatter them as brunettes. They need softer hair cuts, more hair framing their faces, something!
