Martha Stewart Gets Crafty With Proenza Schouler Designers

To kick off what's going to be a very fashionable spring season on the Martha Stewart Show, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler stopped by the domestic goddess's show yesterday to recreate the neon tie-dyes that defined their highly coveted Spring 2010 collection.

Grinning from ear-to-ear, both designers flanked Stewart at her work table as they talked about the beginnings of their company and their big break -- involving the infamous story of Hernandez slipping a note to Anna Wintour on a plane -- while tie-dying china silk scarves without the aid of rubber bands or strings (get the list of supplies here).

The three used multiple colors of the easy-to-use Simply Spray to liven up their scarves, although McCollough's ended up a bit blotchy, causing Stewart to compare it to the Rorschach ink blot test and decode the pattern in a cheesy way to read: "I see great success for a firm called Proenza Schouler."

While working, the two revealed that one of their real tie-dye pieces -- a blue racer back jersey tank produced in India using a string method -- will be sold for $275 for a limited time on proenzaschouler.com.

The designing duo also explained that while they have dressed stars like Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kristen Stewart and Amy Adams, having celebrity fans isn't what it's all about for them.

"It's a fun part of the job, dressing those girls, but for us the most fun is putting on the shows," explained Hernandez, "Because that's really when our complete vision is expressed."

Alas, after their crafting experience, the designers had a mini fashion show of five of their tie-dyed looks for Spring while chatting about how a vacation to Bora Bora and the tropical fish they saw while snorkeling inspired the collection.

Perhaps the highlight of the show was when Stewart pouted that she couldn't fit into any of their garments, at which point the boys assured her that she was "just perfect." Although the highlight for audience members was most likely when it was announced they'd all be going home with a special Proenza Schouler keychain.

Luckily, this episode (some of which you can see here) isn't the only one the style-inclined have to look forward to.

Vogue's Andre Leon Talley
will be cooking brioche with deviled eggs with Stewart -- and discussing America's Next Top Model -- on the April 30th show. And if you can't wait for that, you can tide yourself over with Elle's editor Roberta Myers who will appear on the show today -- April 7th -- to discuss the best up-and-coming designers to watch.

Perhaps too many pierogies! I guess her healthy way of eating she advocates as well as her early morning exercise routine with her trainer and yoga have fallen by the wayside or else she is outing eating the calorie expenditure. Then again it may be a side effect of a medication she is taking or a health issue we do not know about. I have seen her on NY Social pages at parties and I could not believe the size she has become.

I do not like Martha Steward ,I think she is a real snob. And when she has guess cooks on her show she never lets them finish what they are saying..I bet her arms sure get tired of patting hersalf on the back..She claims to have done it all, seen it all and knows it all. I take care of some elderly ladies and the have loved watching the Halmark channel, the watched Golden girls and Little House and 7th Heaven and now she has taken over that Channel all afternoon for her cooking and crafts, there are cooking Channels for that..Go away Martha..

I used to be a HUGE Martha fan until she opened her HUGE Martha mouth and made negative unwarranted remarks about Sarah Palin. Celebrities need to learn to keep their mouths shut about politics unless they plan on running for office. Hundreds upon hundres of people have now cancelled their subscriptions to all of her magazines. After 15 years of subscribing to Martha Stewart Living and several years to Everyday Food, I gladly cancelled my subscription in support of a true Patriot ~ Sarah Palin. Martha can kiss my big white ass.... "It's a Good Thing"......

I get a real chuckle when Martha cooks up a recipe whose ingredients it takes a small army of assistants, which she has, to locate and a small fortune, which she has, to purchase. Then she calmly and matter-of-factly tells her audience, "This recipe is a wonderful appetizer. You should serve it in the drawing room before your guests go to the dining room for dinner." Martha, dear. I hate to burst your bubble, but in the Real World, most people don't have drawing rooms. She's a first-class snob, and I think she gets her silent jollies showing everyone that she's a Have Lots when she knows most of her viewing audience are Just Scraping Bys.

LOVE HER...the best pic ever was with David Spade when he appeared on the show right after her incarceration...she was wearing the poncho that fellow prisoner made her...so was David!!! With his hair styled like her too! I laughed so hard...

What an ignorant thing to say. It's fair to be skeptical of people who've come out of prison or jail - after all, it probably represented bad judgement that they ended up in jail or prison in the first place. However, to generalize like that dooms hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people, who are trying to reenter society, living lives free from any further crime. Maybe you've missed this but literally one in every hundred adults in the US have some criminal justice involvement: http://www.pewcenteronthestates.org/report_detail.aspx?id=35904
Unless your plan is to keep 1% of the population locked up until they all die (which you'd be paying for through higher taxes, by the way) then you'd better start hoping for and demanding your state officials find some programs that rehabilitate people who come out of jail or prison. Here's a link to a very short article that summarizes how among the five main correctional theories (retribution, restorative justice, deterrence, incapacitation, rehabilitation) rehabilitation is the most reasonable approach...

I wish she would use some of her time and money to help the poor. Just living your life for money and fun is a good way to get depressed and live a fruitless life.
