You might find yourself doing a double-take in the grocery store this month. Nabisco partnered with preppy icon Lilly Pulitzer to transform the Barnum's Animals crackers boxes -- all for a roaring good cause.

Rather than the classic red circus-train design, the rectangular boxes are illustrated with a menagerie of animals. It's a distinctively Lilly look, with a breezy, sketchy style and a bright pink, green and yellow palette.

The back of the box explains the charitable impetus behind this partnership. Kraft Foods, the parent company of Nabisco, supports tiger conservation in Sumatra through the World Wildlife Fund.

In honor of 2010, the Year of the Tiger, Nabisco Barnum's Animals crackers will donate $100,000 to the WWF to help protect these endangered cats.

The box redesign with Lilly Pulitzer helps raise awareness of these efforts.

One million of these special-edition boxes are being produced. They started shipping to grocery stores in late March and will be available through this month, depending on how quickly they're snapped up.

Janie Schoenborn, fashion director of Lilly Pulitzer, told StyleList, "Lilly Pulitzer has never repeated a print in 50 years, with designs often inspired by tigers, gators and other endangered species. It was truly rewarding to create a product that gives back!"

This project dovetails with Lilly Pulitzer's spring clothing collection, called Protective Prints. The designs were inspired by different endangered species, ranging from butterflies to crocodiles.

As we previously reported, the company released its first black-and-white print with a panda motif; a portion of the net sales from that print was also donated to the WWF.

why do companies change packaging for no reason?sure the new box will attract consumers but how many people will pass up animal crackers because they don't see the familiar train car with the string for ease of carrying it.sure the'll recover the buyers , but what about the losses for the first month or so lost money like that is not recovered. i bet that people who grew up in the 50s and 60s would be able to say what's inside a box or jar with the label removed. you don't fix something that's not broken

I know the image of the circus train is old fashioned and politically incorrect now and rightfully so. But making over the Animal Crackers box is hardly going to contribute to world peace.

Who cares about what the box looks like? It's the animal cookies that matter! After all, any kid enjoys cookies!

I have eaten these cookies for a life time. I gran would get me a box everytime we went to the food mart. I am thinking the new colors would NOT have been to my liking as a little boy WAY to girlish.. So I guess I think it stinks.. sorry ..ugly

Why the feminine colors on the box? It's too flowery and "froo-froo" now. My boys (now grown) always loved the other box, and I don't think that little boys will be flocking to buy the new design.

It's okay for now, as long as they don't tamper with the recipe itself. but after this campaign is over, they should go back to the circus box.

Hmm, the design looks pretty spazzy -- I prefer the classic style for a classic treat -- but I think it's a great idea to have some info on the back about the tiger conservation efforts! But while we're on the subject... when did Nabisco start putting weird-looking koala crackers in the mix? Koalas don't join the circus, guys.

I don't like it. I've been eating animal crackers since I was a kid and always loved the colorful train box. I'll be happy when they go back to it. In the meantime, the WWF is a great organization and I'm glad they're getting something out of this temporary (I hope) box.

They should keep the original design. I remember as a kid collecting all the animal train boxes and connecting it to make a long train. Where's the option for imagination.

It says that 1 million have been produced, which means that it might not be permanent, but just something special to endorse tiger protection. Personally, I think it is cute, and there is nothing wrong with the colors! If boys have a problem, tell them that REAL men wear pink! Having seen plenty of race jockeys and hockey stars wear pink for various reasons (jockeys because that is the horse owner's choice of silk colors, hockey players because of breast cancer awareness jerseys), I have no problem with the temporary change in looks. In fact, I wouldn't have a problem with it being permanent!

WHY?.. It was fine the way it was....Its one of those traditional things that souldnt be altered...Its almost Iconic...Changing teh box is going to promote world peace?....The old one was so identifiable to kids and adults alike and when you saw the box it always brought back really nice memories....
