Spring 2010 Accessories Trend: Crossbody Bags

Crossbody bags aren't just for the messengers anymore. The masculine-shaped satchel is making a fun run everywhere from Mulberry to MCM this spring.

"We've been seeing a lot of the 'urban warrior' trend, and crossbody styles are a big part of that," says Carrie Chapman, Senior Buyer at Barneys New York. "They are functional and edgy, and can be very sophisticated."

With the ability to be slung across one's torso, this functional accessory leaves you hands-free. Not such a bad thing when you consider all the gadgetry that people are carrying these days (hello iPad!). Better yet, it can give an über casual outfit a bit of panache, and pairs well with an elegant look too, like a LBD.

In the following slideshow, we round out the best of the bunch at a variety of price points. What do you think? Will you be tapping into this trend?

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

Proenza Schouler's PS1 satchel in crocodile is the Rolls Royce of crossbody bags and a natural fit for this best-of list. Celebs like Leighton Meesteer, Kirsten Dunst, and Chloe Sevigny can't get enough of the ample storage space and utilitarian design.

Proenza Schouler's PS1 Large Crocodile Satchel, $14,500, available at Net-a-porter.com.

A leather version retails for $1995, available at Barneys.com.

The briefcase worn messenger-style is the latest hands free option for busy women on the go. The SAK's version comes in lots of color ways and two, easy-access flip pockets are a much-needed touch for urban dwellers on the run.

THE Sak's Silverlake Flap, $199, available at Thesak.com.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

Strap on lots of style with this saddle-bag, crossbody silhouette. As always, you'll get unmatched quality at a great value with Radley London.

Grosvenor Shoulder Bag, $295, available at Radleylondon.com.

Girl meets boy in this compact, crossbody alternative to the fanny pack. Actress, Emmy Rossum was recently spotted strolling the streets of Los Angeles with this bag.

Rebecca Minkoff's BF Messenger, $295, available at Rebeccaminkoff.com.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

Like your favorite pair of Joe's Jeans, the leather on this Joe's handbag will become softer and suppler with time. Available in a variety of fogy, dusty shades, this crossbody is best when worn casually with jeans and a rocker-infused tank a la Kristen Stewart in The Runaways.

Joe's Jeans' Jude Hobo, $120, available at Joesjeans.com.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

Originally created in 1947, GUCCI's bamboo handle has been revamped with the New Bamboo bag. Leather wrapped around the handle adds a fresh touch, but it's the long shoulder strap that has us buzzing. Think of this handbag as the crossbody for the lady who lunches and launches.

GUCCI's New Bamboo, $2350.00, available at Gucci.com.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

Go totally 80's and have a rad time with this chain and leather strap, tambourine-shaped bag from MCM.

MCM's Alda Tambourine, $380, available at MCM Shops at the Plaza (212) 759-3000.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

"We have messenger-styles that are worn crossbody in a more classic way, but we are also seeing longer drops or adjustable straps in hobo styles now," says Carrie Chapman, Senior Buyer Barneys New York. And for those of us that don't want to add bulk to our frames vis a vis bulging pockets, the zipper compartments on this hobo are the answer to our organizational needs.

Marc by Marc Jacobs' Flash Slingdoodle Zippered Hobo, $458, available at Barneys.com.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

If you want to know what's going to be hot, just look at what handbag queen Joy Gryson is up to. With her more youthful and affordable line, Olivia Harris, crossbody bags have been on the design board for many season. This studded, drawstring option is our pick for day, night and weekend play.

Olivia Harris's Studded Baby Ball Hobo, $295, available at Saksfifthavenue.com.

Top 13 Crossbody Bags

"Our customer is enticed by multi-use items like crossbody bags. They see it as having great value, because the bag can be worn crossbody, over one shoulder or as clutch like this Be&D bag," says Colleen Sherin, Fashion Director at Saks Fifth Avenue. Extra bonus: wear the detachable chain and leather strap as a sexy belt or multi-strand bracelet.

Be&D's Dylan Convertible Bag, $495, available at Saksfifthavenue.com.

I have had at least five or more of this type of bag. I call them shoulder strap, and some have handles to be carried by hand.
Every single one of the five or more cost, at the most, a whopping $15.oo, or under and were purchased at a Target or a KMart.

My sister was considering laser resurfacing to get rid of her wrinkles and instead of going through that pain and expense, I urged her to reconsider and try Dermitage with me. I had heard great things about Dermitage and how it was much better than botox. I ordered two jars of Dermitage and sent one to her about 3 months ago. Recently we were together for her birthday and we both were impressed with the smooth look and softer texture of our skin. It was no accident if you go to their web site and read about the ingredients in Dermitage you'll see why it is in a class by itself when it comes to reducing the appearance of wrinkles. http://Dermitage.notlong.com

I have been using the closest thing I can find as crossover body bag for years when traveling by air; this frees the hands for things like luggage and wandering kids. What took so long for someone to come up with this idea?

we had this very same thing when i was a kid - we called them "book bags". and they were NOT convenient, because as you walked, they would bang back and forth against your body. and you always ended up having to hold them in place with your hands any way to stop them from banging against you, and the straps dug into which ever shoulder was unfortunate enough to have to bear the burden of really heavy books inside the book bag.and i always used to try and shift the thing around to my back, and it would just come shifting back round to the front of me again once i let go after trying to move it to the back of my body. i don't see how these would be any more convenient than the of-late-current-trend - back packs. but that's just me.

I almost NEVER wear anything BUT crossbody bags! Here's why:

1. I have very small, sloping shoulders, and a regular, over-one-shoulder bag simply does NOT stay on, no matter what, including having tried those shoulder strap pad thingies, etc. A cross-body also distributes the weight better.

2. I was raised in NYC and Boston, and it's just safer, security wise. I'm so used to that, I feel completely insecure with a regular one-shoulder bag, little dinky forearm-hand-wrist strap bag (a la Queen Elizabeth), or god forbid, a CLUTCH!

3. And I can't stand not having both hands free to DO THINGS, like SHOP. Can't stand having to HOLD a purse strap in my hand or having it digging into my wrist, while trying to actually DO SOMETHING.

4. Maybe I'll stop seeing all the stupid women who throw their 'handbag' into their grocery cart (sometimes completely OPEN) and then keep turning their backs on it!
Makes me want to swipe their bag, just to teach them a lesson.

I'm SOOO glad that cross-body bags are 'back' again, as it's been a little difficult the past few years to find nice ones.

Uhhh....aren't these just shoulder strap bag, geniuses? Which have ALREADY been around since the handbag was invented? I can't use any purse without a long strap, so I have been using the dreaded "mom purse" for decades (hey, the mom purse is the backbone of civilization!). I have never understood how to carry a pocketbook with a short handle - in my hand, swinging along? Under my arm? Over my forearm with arm slightly raised, like Sophia Petrillo does on Golden Girls? Don't get it - it's like carrying around your belongings in a plastic grocery sack - set it down and you might walk away and forget it. The shoulder strap, no matter if you give it a fancy name, is the only bag for me! And yes, ladies, don't plonk your open purse in the seat of a grocery cart, it's irrestible to every cheap thief!

Not exactly, Lassie. A "shoulder bag" implies that it is slung over ONE shoulder ONLY.
Hence my comment above as to why I can NOT use 'shoulder bags' - they fall right off my shoulder (one shoulder). MANY 'shoulder bags' are made with fixed length straps TOO short to be slung ACROSS the body, so they are useless to me.

But, I DO agree with your comment on all the stupid women who throw their purses into the seat of the shopping cart - I am seemingly the ONLY woman in Arizona who does NOT do that - most likely because I am from the Northeast, and am used to watching out for my personal safety. The women (and men) here are totally oblivious to anything around them, which never ceases to amaze me.

Ladies, if you place your purse in the seat of your grocery cart and your purse has a handle on it be sure to get a cart that has a workable child safety belt. When you set your purse in the cart, wrap the child safety belt around the handle of your purse a few times and hook it. This will keep someone from taking your purse without you knowing. Be sure that your purse is closed.

I don't like these styles because they're so huge and the weight on my back and shoulders would keep my chiropractor in business forever. I bought a Healthy Back Bag from www.ameribag.com and it's roomy enough to hold my stuff but still stay light, and keeps me hands free for shopping and traveling. The leather ones are pricey (some day, when I hit the lottery) ;) but the fabric and nylon ones are reasonable and do the job quite nicely. I can use the bag one-shoulder if I want, and there's a no-slip surface on the underside of the strap so it stays in place. Sorry if this sounds like an ad, but when it comes to cross body bags, I'm just really pleased with my purchase :)

I have been using cross body bags for more yrs. that I can remember.
One of my favorite companies is Tignanello, which I always purchase at TJMAXX.
Their leathers are just fine with me.... very soft.

If I had all the money in the world.... I would never buy ANYTHING just to show the world that I support the OVERLY PRICED POMPOUS brand names....
What's in a name ??? For me >>> NADA !!!

A new word for an old concept. I'm glad to see this come back into vogue. I've always perfered shoulder strap bags (now called the cross-body bags) because they free the hands, allow fro better security with the bag closer to the body, and help keep the body more centered. Obviously men who design handbags don't carry them and don't understand the hazards to one's posture when having to lift a shoulder to keep a bag from sliding off or the awkardness of trying to carry a handbag in one hand and juggle packages and kids at the same time.

Ah what was old, becomes new again. Yes, these "new crossbody" bags" are nothing more than an updated old fashioned bookbag from school- the 60's and 70's . I have always worn bags that both had the shoulder cross strap and handle. Nothing new.
Just call it something different and make more money from unsuspecting people. I'm short and have small shoulders and have always worn my bags "crossbody" because they didn't fall off and it made me feel more secure, not to mention, shopping is easier. Carry on. :)

Ah, you must be a Lady Who Lunches! Kinda reminds me of Queen Elizabeth - I always wonder WHY she even BOTHERS to carry a purse - what does need one for, with all the attendants and security around her? About all she might need would a tissue, perhaps? It's not like she'll be fixing her makeup in public, or making a cell phone call, or even TAKING OUT A CREDIT CARD! lol.

For the rest of us, who have LIVES....we need something big enough to carry all the accoutrements in, without killing our backs.

The prices are ridiculous. Don't really see anything "new" about any of them. If you live long enough you learn to buy what YOU like and forget the so-called "trends" of the season. Who cares?!

You guys complaining about the 'prices' DO KNOW that these are available in EVERY price point, right? The ones shown in the pics are for illustrative purposes only, just like anything else you'd see in a fashion magazine. Like everything else in fashion, it is knocked off at all levels of quality and detail - and price. But the general idea is the same.

They are not so bad in the winter over a heavy coat...but in the spring and summer OMG!!! don`t take my word for it just have a look in the mirror..and while your walking down the street just notice where the mens eyes focus!!! unless of course that doesn't bother you..............the reason I use a backpack!!! my hands are free. Just an honest observation!!!

Huh? My cross body purses all land on my hip - I'm not sure why you find that so offensive. Unless you mean the actual strap across the body - again, I'm not sure what you mean. The TWO straps of a backpack call just as much attention to the breasts (if that's what you're getting at), since they are one on each side, framing them. And at any rate, backpacks are a lot LESS secure - you'd be surprised at how easily a thief can open on and get your valuables without you even feeling it.
