Fashion Blogger Garance Dore Attacks Plus-Size Trend as Unhealthy, Unflattering

Vogue loves 'em. V loves 'em. And even Karl Lagerfeld loves 'em (finally).

But it sounds like not everyone is rushing to embrace curves.

Effortlessly chic French fashion blogger Garance Dore has hit out against the plus-size craze, calling it unhealthy and gimmicky, Sky News reports.

Dore, whose gigs as a fashion illustrator, street style photographer and girlfriend of Scott "The Sartorialist" Schuman have made her a favorite Fashion Week fixture, made the controversial comments in an interview with the AAP, according to Sky.

"I think it's too much and almost naive of the fashion industry, because it would be nice in a few years that the idea of different body shapes is normal, but right now it's not quite there yet," she reportedly said.

"It should not be such a big deal to show women with different bodies, but sometimes it's treated like a bit of joke, or for shock, like the plus-size models on the runway in the UK fashion week."

She's referring to the Mark Fast show, which saw curvy catwalkers like Crystal Renn and Hayley Morley strut down the runway.

The blogger also "weighed" in on curve-themed magazine issues from the likes of V Magazine and French Elle.

"It's not such a good thing to show plus-size because it's not really physically healthy and not always flattering to fashion," she sniffed.

Ouch. Sounds like curve-dissing designer Rosemary Masic has a new recruit.

We can see how Dore would be wary of designers simply using heavier models to get publicity, but the industry isn't magically going to grow up overnight.

And as for dismissing plus-size models as "not really physically healthy"? Last time we checked, neither was starving yourself to fit into a designer dress.

Sigh. There goes another girl crush.

Do you agree with Garance's anti-plus-size statements, or do you enjoy seeing diversity on the runway? Leave a comment.

Meanwhile, check out our latest interview with Crystal Renn on the plus-size industry.

For some of us, weight gain and weight retention have to do with Prednisone or similar doctor-prescribed steroids. They keep us alive, but they also pack on the weight. For some of us, weight gain issues are glandular. If you insist on being inconsiderate, please do so on your own time. It's hard enough for us to look decent, much less fashionable. So go ahead and take away one of the only vestiges of fashion-consciousness we have left. Then go look at yourself in the mirror. I don't think you can possibly be happy with what you see, but if you are, shame on you.

Well there's one less blog I have to check in my Google Reader. Last time I read her blog she was in despair because the volcanic ash was messing up her plans to fly to Tokyo. I'm sure if I got paid to fly around the world and take pictures I'd be skinny enough to fit in sample sizes too. I'd just be happy enough to have a job that provided healthcare! People's ignorance amazes me.

I agree with you. Frustration can sometimes take the best of a person. I really hate them you know people that have an issue with one person or issue and they take it out on the whole world. Pitty but, life goes on don't you think? If we pay attention to the comments we will all turn out the same way...I don't think so. Life is too good to be upset for what one person wrote.

At first her comments seemed reasonable and sane, but then she went and ruined it with the plus sized models "not really physically healthy" crap. Based on what? If it's based on model testimonials you would find that most who eat healthy and exercise aren't size 0 or 2. And there is no evidence that plus sized (usually size 12) is an unhealthy size medically either. By a lot of accounts that's a normal size to be at. I'm skinny and I can tell you that it's not because of some awesome diet I'm on. It's genetics. I wish people would be accepting of more different body types and not judge. Do some research and let people's doctors be the commentator on their health.

Plus size models are not obese, and are not unhealthiy. The fact that someone isn't stick thin doesn't mean that they have health issues! Sometimes, it's even the other way around.

Maybe some fashion items aren't as flattering on someone with a few more pounds, with that I can agree; but to go from there, to say that it's an unhealthy trend, when there are girls with severe eating disorders caused by body image issues formed by social pressure to fit into a standard many times set by the fashion industry... Well, that's just wrong.

Julia, I agree. Also, may I add, even though some fashions do look better that on a 0 or 2 there are some fashions that look better on a girl that fills out a garment, and give it some life. Some things are just meant for a girl with breasts, or hips. You know, normal female attributes. People just don't give fuller figured girls any credit. I'm sick of hearing the "oh, fashion looks so much better on size 0-2." That is subjective, and not always the case.

I am guessing these comments are taken out of context. It has become gimicky. Magazines are making money from it. That's why it's being published. And if people can't see that there is a business side to this fad as well then maybe they are in denial. There is definitely a difference between big boned and overweight, which is unhealthy.

and using stick-thin models was never a gimick?? the media has made more money convincing people they're not thin enough since the 70s and using this mentality to make money on everything from fashion to food. Where do you think the idea of fat free came from? you're in denial about everything that surrounds us and has been surrounding us since the atkins and south beach diets. people would be healthier today if they didn't exploit everyone and act as though fat free things would solve all our problems and make people feel horrible about themselves. it's people like you that let this stuff go without even thinking. you're obviously the sheep here

I don't think Garance's comments were ANTI curves at all. I think she was more against using plus size models as a gimmick -- she even stated that it shouldn't be a "novelty" to show women of different sizes, however, it unfortunately is -- a once a year editorial that can make the fashion editors feel PC. It's like the whole "women in rock" thing. Extremely gimmicky and very insulting.

As for her saying that plus size models are not physically healthy, well, sorry, but I agree. Obesity is an epidemic. And we shouldn't be celebrating it -- just as we shouldn't celebrate anorexia. And we don't. I've never seen any articles praising girls for being too thin -- in fact, I've most fashion magazines often feature stories on the problem of eating disorders amongst models -- like in a recent issue of Vogue. Unfortunately, it comes with the terrority of modeling, where women are supposed to be tall and lithe to suit the clothes. I'm sorry, but I don't want to see hefers in Lanvin. Nor do I want girls to starve themselves to in a Chanel show, either.

Also, To assume that the subtext of Garance's comments about plus size models is that being too thin is ok is just ridiculous and unfair. She didn't even address the issue of anorexia and I'm sure if she asked you, she'd say that "too thin" is just disgusting as obesity.

Garance used the word "health" which means not too big, not too small, but HEALTHY. And I fully agree with her.

Yeah I first thought the "plus size" thing was a fad. I am unconvinced that we are suddenly going to see bigger models on the runway. But "physically unhealthy?" Has she seen these "plus size" girls? they are not that big. anyone bigger than size 00 is considered plus size. and of course the clothes don't fit well. my mom can't get into my stuff and im not bone thin. it's because the clothes are mad to fit a flat board.

Plus-size and curvy is perfectly healthy. Obesity is unhealthy. these idiots don't seem to understand the difference. An adult woman of average height who wears a size 14 is NOT obese! They think anyone who wears bigger than size 2 is unhealthy!

Plus size models are hardly ever actually "plus size". I understand that we as a society shouldn't promote being overweight, but being a size seven or so isn't unhealthy. Requiring a model to be thin enough to represent clothes the way they look on a hanger is EXTREMELY unhealthy and in the past has led to drug abuse and eating disorders. This woman needs to pull her head out of her ass.

Curvy, ha! The American self-esteem sizing for women's clothing is the laughing stock of the world. Talk to a woman in just about any other country (except maybe England) who's had 3 kids and is still a size 4, at the most, about why an American "size 4" dress can serve as a pup tent.

I will take plus size over skeletons walking down the runway any day. Does she even realize that you actually die faster from being severely thin than you do from being overweight. Any by the way, what is considered plus size in the fashion world (their version of overweight) can start at a size 5/6. Since was that overweight in the real world.

Guess what! The sickly thin, skin and bones look of the models on the runways is not physically healthy either. Yes, I know some people are naturally that thin or there may be other issues, but in general, not many people are THAT thin. How about showing an average person on the runway.

Fat people are fat because they don't know the first thing about exercise or nutrition. There is no such thing as big boned and fat people who think they look good are hilarious.

Yer an idiot Linemanron...I hate to tell you this but I exercise and watch what I eat because of a Gastro problem which renders me immobile if I don't eat enough and I'm 300 lbs. It's not all about nutrition and exercise, go back to science class they've found that certain people store calories better then others (Which back in the old days of survival made them the most sought after mates) due to genetics. Anyone that's so narrow as to think it's just an exercise and nutrition issue is in sore need of a higher education.

Seriously? No such thing as big boned? I'm 5'4, and have a bigger ribcage and the majority of my girlfriends that are the same height. And yes, it is my RIBCAGE. I can easily feel my muscles and ribs under my skin if i poke around. I may have a little fat on me, but it's in a healthy way. You are the epitome of the word "douchebag"
