Let the apartment lusting begin!
Photographer/blogger Todd Selby is known for shooting the fabulously quirky living spaces of creative characters -- think "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" for the hipster set -- and now his home-design snaps are available in book form.
Published by Abrams and in bookstores now, "The Selby Is in Your Place" offers a voyeuristic peek at the eclectic homes and studios of artists, musicians, writers, fashion fixtures (including Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, Erin Wasson, and Helena Christensen) and assorted other cool kids. Martha Stewart Living, this ain't.
StyleList: How do you decide who to photograph? What's your criteria?
Todd Selby: It's usually a friend of a friend. There is a simple formula I follow: person that interests me + creative space = great subject.
SL: If you could move into any of the homes you've shot, whose would it be?
TS: [Interior designer] Jacques Grange in Paris
SL: What's the weirdest or most disturbing thing you've stumbled upon while shooting?
TS: Marilyn Monroe's sleeping pills.
SL: Which fashion personality would you love to photograph?
TS: Ralph Lauren.
SL: What do you think about related street-style blogs (such as The Sartorialist, Garance Dore)? Are these snapshots of "real life" replacing fashion and design magazines as style influencers?
TS: The Selby isn't replacing any magazines. I actually work for a few magazines. [It's about] teamwork.
SL: Have you ever been to someone's place and been completely shocked by their home?
TS: Nope. I always do my research so I know what I am getting into.
SL: What's your own place like? What would we be surprised to find?
TS: It looks like my brain. You would only be surprised if you don't know what my brain looks like!
SL: Name three key elements for a fantastic home.
TS: Style. Intelligence. Execution.
SL: What's next for you?
TS: Just wait.
