How to Wear the Same Dress for an Entire Year

"What should I wear?"

It's a question for the ages -- ranking right up there with "What is the meaning of life?" "What, exactly, is the story with Donald Trump's hair?" And, of course, "Does this outfit make my butt look big?"

For the last 365 days, Sheena Matheiken has taken away the guesswork from at least one of those queries. For one year, the New Yorker by way of India pledged to wear the same little black dress -- Every. Single. Day -- as part of The Uniform Project, her way of combining fashion, sustainability, and philanthropy.

It's served as a way to raise awareness of The Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots nonprofit that brings education to children living in Indian slums. So far, Matheiken's efforts have raised nearly $77,000 -- enough to send over 200 kids to school.

Adding in the sustainable element, she says, was a natural.

"I already shopped vintage and thrift-store stuff for years, so this exercise was more about formalizing that side of things," Matheiken tells StyleList. "It was more about showing that style can be very individual, and you don't have to follow fast trends. It was trying to bring that sense of creativity and individuality back into fashion."

So who better to give tips on how to diversify our own closets -- making the clothing we already have work harder for us.

StyleList quizzed Matheiken on her fashion takeaways a few days before May 1, the one-year anniversary of the very first day she donned Eliza Starbuck's black dress, which is designed to be worn both frontward and backward and as an open tunic (there were actually seven identical styles she could rotate).

"I never actually felt like I was wearing the same thing every day," says Matheiken. "Every day looks completely different. The looks make me feel like different characters, personalities."

When you flip through Matheiken's daily outfit postings -- she explains her 15 favorite outfits in the gallery below -- sometimes it's hard to believe the dress is always the same.

The Uniform Project's Sheena Matheiken talks about 15 of her favorite looks from her year spent wearing the same dress.

The Uniform Project

"This was in London," Matheiken says. "I was traveling and this is kind of desperate because traveling gets crazy." The blouse, thrifted corduroy skirt, vintage belt, pumps and tights are all her own. The vintage turban was borrowed from a friend.

The Uniform Project

"This day was a big hit," Matheiken says. "People were big fans of this. These are from random donations, the boots, the sweater, the hat -- with the exception of the socks -- they were mine."

The Uniform Project

"Ooh, I liked that day," she says of these harem pants by Scary, printed tights by Catherine Cogorno, and vintage pocket watch bet and yellow cut-out pumps from eBay.

The Uniform Project

"That's one of our favorite donors for project," Matheiken says of the ribbon tie from Argentinian label Hartefactos. She says she threw together the patterned tights and striped socks from Sockdreams, and the shoes are "just vintage eBay boots."

The Uniform Project

The handmade bubble neck piece was a donation from Jasmeet Kahlon. "It's actually a headband thing, but I liked it as a choker, so I wore it around my neck," Matheiken says. "The tights are one of my favorite things I wore during the project. She hand-dyes them and makes these beautiful gradients," she says of the Tara St. James style.

The Uniform Project

Matheiken layered a SANS bag dress under her LBD, and, yes, that's actually a bag built into it. "It's from an amazing avant garde fashion designer in New York," she says.

The Uniform Project

"That's another one my favorite designers," Matheiken says of this Snoozer Loser jacket made from vintage Italian upholstery. "It's a very cool piece."

The Uniform Project

"This was fun," she says. "The neck piece is so cool." Donated by Icelandic designer Elín Bríta, it's handmade. The tights are from Sockdreams, the vintage pumps are from eBay and the bun fascinator headpiece with feathers was donated by Pretty Good Things.

The Uniform Project

The quilted jacket was a donation from Öni's momma. "And the fabric necklace is basically made out of old T-shirts," Matheiken says of the style from Etnyk on Etsy. "It's a cool technique. I guess it's very Etsy-esque. The shoes were a donation -- old vintage '80s pumps that are also one of my favorites."

The Uniform Project

"We did an Etsy Labs session in December with Generation T," she says. "I basically made this thing out of an old T-shirt." The vintage Dr. Martens are from eBay, and the hand-painted bangles were given as a gift from Indian students who are part of Akanksha.

The Uniform Project

Matheiken stocked StyleList with tips for making clothes look consistently different -- even if you've been wearing them for a year straight. But now that she's worn that same style daily for a year, will she be retiring it to the Dry Cleaning Hall of Fame?

"I'll definitely wear it again," she says. "It's a good dress."

Tip 1: Find yourself. "The most important thing is to really feel comfortable and confident about playing a little bit. A lot of people forget that [fashion] can become a really easy and fun source of expression and, instead, people get very upset and stressed out about it. That attitude shift is the first thing that will help you start wearing things you thought you wouldn't normally have been able to pull off."

Tip 2: Shop your closet.
"There are so many things in your closet that are just sitting there buried and completely forgotten. There are many things you can do in terms of layering -- little things you can add to change a silhouette, like a belt, or adding layers underneath a dress or over it -- that can completely change a look. And, very often, it's something that's already in your wardrobe. You don't need to buy new things. Just by throwing around a few things in different permutations, you can create a very different look."

Tip 3: Always accessorize. "You have to realize what is it that you like. Are you a scarf person? Are you a belt person? What are the things you're naturally drawn to? Expand on that and start playing with them."

Tip 4: Keep it simple. "It's interesting when you give yourself a creative constraint how much more creative you tend to become. Having these limitations was actually helpful and made me be more creative and push my own boundaries. For me, it was easier to get ready in the morning because you already had your base piece. So, then it was just a question of building off of it. I never had to wake up and go, 'Oh, no, what am I wearing today?' It was just a question of reinventing that thing."

This was one of the most enjoyable articles Stylist! Her outfilts were amazing, inspiring, creative and made me want to be more creative when putting my outfits together. Plus it doesnt hurt that she is cute and thin. THANKS for a great piece stylist and good luck with the Project. Raising that much money for charity is wonderful!

i still wonder the following:

A. Did she own 365 copies of the same black dress?
B. Or....when did the occasion come for her to wash the dress in between wearings?
C. What will this woman wear on a leap year? Does it put her on tilt?

It just a curiosity. Not judging, just saying....don't ya know!

Thanks,
Susie H.

I have to admit that we all probably have too much in our closets and could do much more with fewer basics and more accessories. I love hats and scarves and using these can change your look drastically. A scarf as a belt, a head wrap, a drape over the shoulder and even as an accessory for the hat itself can give you a fresh look. Reinvent your creativity and let yourself go. You will find you will feel better and definitely looking different from the crowd.

She's certainly creative alright! Most of her styles are a bit too weird for me, but for some reason, they work for her!

So you don't like the outfits. Whoopedee doo for you. I think you missed the point ENTIRELY. She was raising money to help send kids to school who would have otherwise not had a chance. 200 of them in a year. What have you ever done to make such an impact? Plus, it was about being versatile with what you have, not saying "wear this" like every other fashion article. I believe she said find what works for you.

What an incredibly dumb idea and even more idiotic story. Let's put those creative energies to some worthwhile use, people. This is definitely not *it.*

Raising money to send kids from the slums of India to school isn't worthwhile? Wow. What would it take to be worthwhile then, exactly?

Have you or can you think of anything creative that you could do to make that much money to help out ANY cause?? Or do you just sit on your computer all day and gripe about the people that have the creative minds that do? Because that's what your comment sounds like to me and as long as somebody else is doing a GREAT job at helping others your feeling a little left out...........

I didn't like the outfits but thats my opinion. but as far as it being "nice" for the earth--How? by washing 1 dress everynight? think of the soap & water & electricity. no--no environmental savings there.

Who says she's washing it every day? Who dictates that we have to wash our clothes every day? This is yet another idiocy marketers have dreamed up that we adhere to like sheep, buying more soap and clothes (and houses, and cars, and vacations...) than anyone needs, to propagate their lies and build their empires. Doing exactly what they say we must. Sunlight is still the best disinfectant... Maybe she is airing it out every night on a clothesline and washing it once or twice a week? So much for us being enlightened. Let's give the benefit of the doubt.

Very interesting and creative outfits, I was impressed! Wish *I* could pull it off, but I'm too old n' chubby to walk around in bright tights, lol! Very nice article and very inspiring, I liked the imaginative touches like the neckpieces and the vintage shoes.

I have to do the SAME thing with my daughter's plain "uniform" which is mandatory for her school's dress code!! In order to keep from looking plain, boring and unflattering, we add hair accessories, belts, tights, scarves, lapel pins and fun shoes. No news here, but it was a nice project.
