Stem Cells From Your Thighs Can Be Used for Your Face-Lift

Back in the days of the Bush administration, the scientific advances provided by stem-cell research were significantly reduced due to his ban on federal funding.

Since Obama lifted the ban in March 2009, research and development using these cells has resumed and continues to aid in the search for treatments for many cancers and degenerative diseases.

And there are the aesthetic innovations, namely in skin care (use of apple stem cells in products by Dr. Brandt, Lather, and Emerge Labs is said to preserve skin's youthful appearance) and plastic surgery.

Boy, do we love a good beauty advancement! Earlier this year, StyleList reported on stem-cell injections as part of a nonsurgical face-lift, used in conjunction with fat grafts (removing fat from one area of the body, like your thighs, abs, or butt, and using it to plump the face).

Today's Daily Mail reports, "Cells with this kind of power, it was thought, had to be harvested from embryos created in the lab or left over from fertility treatment. They were rare, precious, and extremely controversial. But this week, doctors have revealed how they are taking stem cells from adults and using them to repair faulty hearts. Those stem cells came from blood vessels. But there is another, perhaps surprising, source of stem cells -- our own fat."

So a source of potentially regenerative cells was hiding in our fat cells all along?

This development led U.K. cosmetic surgeon Dr. Mario Russo to the idea of a nonsurgical face-lift that employs only stem cells and no fat injections (which tend to die off after being removed) in order to regenerate collagen and halt or at least slow the aging process.

And eight weeks ago, the Daily Mail reporter volunteered to be the first recipient of this experimental procedure. At a private hospital, she had fat harvested from her abdomen and thighs (a.k.a. liposuction) and waited for it to be processed down to only its stem cells. This youth serum of sorts was immediately injected into her face dozens of times, as well as into a scar on her knee.

Here, the reporter's initial reaction, post-procedure:

"Then I was sent home with the warning that results would be slow to show, but would continue for up to a year -- or more. Over the next few days, I developed a few tiny bruises around my eyes and there was a little swelling, but nothing I couldn't cover up. I was astonished to see results within the first fortnight. My skin, which has always been blotchy, was startlingly clear. Within a month I looked peachier, my pores were smaller and I was less hollow eyed. I woke in the morning and thought for a moment that I'd forgotten to take off my makeup, as my skin looked so even toned. After six weeks, strangers started complimenting me on my skin."

While the injections themselves only took 20 minutes, the procedure is not pain free and costs about $11,000. Hmmm, for that we could buy a Smart Car, but who are we kidding? Smart Cars won't make us look younger or more fabulous. However, glowing, even-toned, plumper skin is priceless.

Meanwhile, read Consumer Reports's study about which wrinkle repairs really work.

Lies, lies and more lies. The kind of stem cell research that resulted in this treatment does not involve embryonic stem cells so that is irrelevant to the topic at hand. Secondly, the private sector was always able to do this kind of research. The writer wastes the first paragraph taking a jab at a past President for actions that had nothing to do at all with the treatment under discussion. Bald faced liberal lies, when they aren't even necessary.

The Bush administration did not ban all stem cell research, only embryonic stem cell research. Embryonic stem cells have cured zero, zilch, nada people. On the contrary, adult stem cells are readily available and have cured countless individuals from cancer and other diseases. Get your facts straight.

Interesting, the author has absolutely no clear understanding of the Bush stand on stem cells or its real implications. None whatsoever. Like the fact that federal funding was not cut, but rather was supposed to be used on existing stem cell lines. Like the fact that scientists were in agreement that there were sufficient existing lines. But wow, now that he's gone, she can have a injectible face lift! Wow! Liberals rejoice!

This is just ONE advantage of stem cell use. Soon we will have the sick cured because of stem cell research

Actually Under Mr. Bush stem cell research was not stopped. What was stopped was GOVERNMENTAL funds from Tax payors" being used to fund "EMBRYOTIC Stem Cell Research" This means that funds provided by taxpayors who did not want to support experimentation on Embryos was not allowed to be used to fund such research. Independent research was still allowed and research on stem cell lines from sources other than embryos was still allowed. So the entire premise of this artical is inartiuculate, inflamatory and basically inaccurate. Why would the left wing's supposedly highly educated literary geniuses do this? Can't they at least be honest on one issue? Are they clever to try to trick people with word games? This is poor reporting at the least and dishonesty in fact. They think you people are all deserving to receive their trickery and think they are clever because some left wing literature teacher told them they could get what they want if they only redefine reality and keep saying it. This infuriates me because it assumes that Americans are stupid. Sorry this needs to be exposed for the good of the country.

I'm just glad Obama reversed it so that we can find other treatments for all kinds of things. But I do not agree that they waste time and money on a face lift treatment from it. That's just stupid! We have bigger fish to fry with this research.

Typical Maxist / Liberal approach, if you tell a lie often enough, people will believe it is the truth. This research with adult stem cells was NOT banned from federal funding during the Bush adminstration. There were specific limitations on federal funding for EMBRYONIC cell derived research. There has been much more scientific progress with adult derived stem cells than embryonic stem cells up to this point. One major advantage of using your own stem cells for developing any type of therapy is your body will not reject the incoming cells and antirejection drugs will not have to be used.

Many therapies using adult stem cell techniques are in testing now and may be soon available for treating a wide variety of diseases. As these come into common use, I am sure the Bush bashers will no doubt use these as examples of the superiority of the Obama adminstration. All it will demonstrate is the ignorance of the Obamaphites to grasp a basic understanding of science.

Lisa Scweitzer needs an editor and competent fact checker. By the way, I am a Ph.D. biologist and don't have time for that job. I have enough consulting work to keep me busy.

Hundreds of thousands of patients have ALREADY been successfully treated for over 70 diseases and human conditions from broken bones that refused to heal to recreating immune systems that were wiped out because of cancer treatments. All of this is done with adult stem cells from either the patient, a donor, or umbilical cord blood. Furthermore it was being done during the Bush years both in the US and all over the world.
It's not new, it's growing in efficiency and, if the research money isn't cut off, one day it will be available in a hospital in your community.
Wonderful news that, happily enough, isn't new.

All you closed minded, ignoramuses who (including the writer of this topic) should stop making everything political. And, to you Reupublicans and Democrats alike: Stop trying to make your "politician de jour" out to be some fantastic, perfect example of humanity. They are, for the most part, equal in their narcissitic, self righteousness.
