The
Met's Costume Institute Gala never has a shortage of stars and unlike some of the more official award shows, the global glitterati are typically in the mood to take some fashionable risks. (As one does when Vogue is coordinating the evening.) While we applaud most of them, a few fell short, ahem,
literally.
Earning top marks for the evening was cool minimalist Zoe Saldana in
backless navy frock by Calvin Klein Collection. Kate Hudson showed some skin in a light pink off-the-shoulder Stella McCartney number with a revealing thigh-high slit. Same for Kerry Washington, who chose a red hot custom-made gown by
Thakoon for Gap (the evening's sponsor). Also winning kudos for their
Gap collaboration is Sophie Theallet, whose mauve one-shoulder satin frock on Jessica Alba harkened back to the days of 1930s-era sirens.
Katy Perry took home the prize for most innovative ensemble in a
Cute Circuit dress lined with LED lights. She kept her
power button in her bra and would turn it off and on regularly while traipsing the red carpet, lighting up like a glow stick.
Of course the belle of the ball was Oprah Winfrey who wore a fitted navy blue ballgown by Oscar de la Renta and did not disappoint.
For all their love of fashion, some guests did manage to look a little undone.
Long metallic dresses were distinctive standouts for Vogue's Anna Wintour (Chanel Haute Couture), Anne Hathaway (Valentino), and Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard (Christian Dior), but "Top Chef" and new mom Padma Lakshmi should have known better than to dress in a too-tight Roberto Cavalli column with feathers fanning off of her sizable cleavage. (It looked more like something out the "Lion King" rather than legendary
Met Ball.)
And though they are among the most compelling actresses of the moment,
Tina Fey and
January Jones separately failed to capture the essence of Parisian chic in their Yves Saint Laurent ensembles. The former in a bulky one piece, and the latter, in a pretty pink satin cocktail dress that was marred a black overlay that overwhelmed. Of course the three-quarter length gloves and Star Trek-esque eye makeup didn't help either.

Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
KNOCK ME DOWN WITH A FEATHER: Padma Lakshmi in Roberto Cavalli. We recognize that she just had a baby and eats for a living, but there was probably a more flattering dress out there. Also, what's going on with those feathers?
Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
BEAUTIFUL IN BLUE: Oscar de la Renta with co-chair Oprah Winfrey, in a custom-made gown by the designer and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry. Fabulous for her figure!
Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
SILVER BELLE Vogue editor and event co-chair Anna Wintour in Chanel Haute Couture. It may have felt like summer outside, but Anna's icy ensemble was perfect.
Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
SIMPLE AND SOPHISTICATED: Zoe Saldana, in Calvin Klein Collection. Only a woman with a willowy figure could pull this asymmetrical style off and she does so with aplomb.
Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
SWEET & SPARKLY: Marion Cotillard shines in Dior Haute Couture.
Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
OVER-WROUGHT: We get that January Jones doesn't want to be known as prim and proper Betty Draper in real life, but this Yves Saint Laurent dress with wrought-iron like detail, long gloves and the crazy eye makeup is trying too hard. Just be beautiful, January!

JUMP! Tina Fey in a Yves Saint Laurent jumpsuit and Fred Leighton earrings. This one-piece reads a bit fancy mechanic, but Fey has made her reputation on her independent thinking. So she probably doesn't care what we think anyway, and that's why we love her.

HOT MAMA: Demi Moore sparkles in this silver, floor-length gown by Lanvin.
Met Costume Institute Gala 2010: Best and Worst Dressed
ROMANTIC RUFFLES: Elvis's granddaughter, Riley Keough, wears Thakoon for Gap (show here with designer Thakoon Panichgul). This dress is beautifully constructed, but could have used a few polishing touches. The messy hair and lack of simple jewelry leaves us wanting more.

WOW FACTOR Christina Hendricks wears a L'Wren Scott gown with a pom-pom detail on the shoulder. The blue gown flatters her famous curves and compliments her fiery red locks.
