Miss USA Contestants Wear Ultra Sexy Lingerie for Official Promo Photos

It doesn't air from Sin City until May 16, but the Miss USA pageant is already making headlines.

In order to highlight the contestants vying for the title, Miss USA franchise owner Donald Trump and company hired photographer Fadil Berisha to snap the girls in a "Waking Up In Vegas"-themed promo shoot that skews more Playboy than the wholesome beauty pageant of years past.

In the highly suggestive shots, the women pose on rumpled bedsheets in nothing more than panties, push-up bras, corsets, boy shorts, thigh-high fishnets, and towering pumps. Cleavage, smoky eyes, moist and pouty lips, and big, tousled hair complement their look, which critics have deemed too risqué. But it seems that's exactly the goal.

"To change the look of Miss USA, we've been going in that direction for a few years now. But [this time] I think we succeeded," Berisha explains in this steamy behind-the-scenes clip of the shoot. "All [of the models] were into it and excited about getting these sexy shots. It's more about sensuality and being really sexy."

Miss USA 2010

According to statements that Trump's reps issued to Fox News, the images that the women were required to pose for are being used to break the "pageant princess" stereotype and instead propel an image of "a smart, sexy, and sophisticated modern woman."

Right, because nothing says "smart and sophisticated" like soft-core porn.

Trump continued to defend the photos today, telling "The Insider":

"We are in a different age. They are a little bit sexy, but I'll tell you what -- everybody's watching, so I have no problems with it. The Miss USA pageant and the Miss Universe pageant just got renewed for three years by NBC. The ratings have been terrific. If you look at Miss America, it's now off network television -- and we're doing better than ever, so I really have no problem with it."

Trump's jab at the rival Miss America pageant is no accident.

The 53-year-old Miss USA pageant was created in response to the prudery, per se, of its older sister pageant, Miss America, which started in 1921.

It all happened when Miss America 1951, Yolande Betbeze, refused to wear a swimsuit to promote the contest after accepting her crown.

"Miss America started as a swimsuit pageant, then added a talent portion in the thirties and a scholarship money prize in 1945," explains Elwood Watson, co-author of "There She Is, Miss America: The Politics of Sex, Beauty, and Race in America's Most Famous Pageant."

"When Miss America has a reign, she goes across the country, and the sponsors wanted Betbeze to pose in swimsuits at different events at shopping malls and supermarkets," says Watson. "And she was not willing to do that. She said, 'I played the game by your rules, but now that I've won the pageant, I'm playing by my rules.'"

Betbeze's refusal to wear a swimsuit to promote the contest ("I'm an opera singer, not a pinup," she explained at the time) caused one of the sponsors, Catalina swimwear, to pull out and create its own contests, Miss USA and Miss Universe.

Although swimsuit contests have always existed in both the Miss America and Miss USA pageants -- despite feminist protests in the sixties and public votes in the nineties to ban them from Miss America -- Betbeze still feels her actions have been pivotal in directing pageant progress towards recognizing intellect, values, and leadership, rather than beauty alone. Um, someone get Trump on the line.

Perhaps the over-the-top sexiness of the photos is particularly upsetting now that the U.K. has taken two strides forward this year by trading the swimsuit competition for an athletic challenge at the Miss England pageant, while Miss USA seems to have taken two giant leaps backward.

We're sure Miss California Carrie Prejean -- who was ripped apart last year after sexy pictures of her surfaced -- is somewhere rolling her eyes. And she's not the only one.

What do you think of the photos -- are they appropriately hot or verging on exploitative?

Just how many shots of a girl catcrawling across a bed does it take? Maybe would have been better if the make-up artist wasn't a Jenna Jamison Beauty School dropout and the photographer used more than red.tube and Playboy for inspiration... *yawn*... borrrrrrring......

If you want to catch attention and not offend and STILL get the guys oggling then why not use your imagination (assuming SOMEONE there has one) ...take 'candid' shots of all the girls playing Beach Volleyball... or something... ANYthing but this jaded, tired and totally overdone bullsh*t!

Do your research next time Mr Trump! You're FIRED!!

"This is all particularly upsetting when we see the U.K. take two strides forward by trading in the swimsuit competition at the Miss England Pageant for an athletic challenge, while here in the U.S., a 90-year-old contest based on awarding young women scholarship money is now running a mile in the opposite direction. "

Miss USA only dates to 1952, so either you made a rather severe math error, or you have it confused with the Miss America pageant (which also accounts for the "scholarship money" claim). It's hard to imagine Aol paying someone who cannot tell one pageant from another to write an article about a pageant!

I believe the article says that Miss USA was started in 1952 after Miss America refused to model in swimsuits after winning. The article correctly states that Miss America began in 1921.

Please read an article thoroughly before insulting its author.

You're confusing the Miss America and the Miss USA pageants. The 2 pageants are so different (USA has swimsuit and gown basically, America has talent, interview; it's the 'scholarship' competition). It still amazes me that so many people don't know the difference. USA has almost always been T & A.

Trump is making the pageant more sleazy every year. He says it is the ratings but he is such a creep that I don't think that is the only motive. I can't think of a better poster boy for a perverted old man than Donald Trump. I bet he still believes his wives married him for his looks and personality.

If this is what they want their image to be then it is their choice. I think it is questionable to photograph 19 year olds dressed in their underwear on beds and then try to make their pageant respectable. These images sell the idea of sex.

Yes, I can explain. Just what makes it so important for the ladies to assume they have to portray sex in order to be beautiful? Male moron mentality?

they are covered, we visit museums to enjoy art. What is wrong with appreciatating the most natural of ALL art Natrual beauty.. WHY does everything have to revolve around sex when it comes to a lovely lady.... It's B.S.

There is nothing wrong with appreciating the natural beauty of a woman. But, this is not the case with these photos. The thing that is wrong about these photos is that these women are BARELY covered. And when the majority of them are half naked posing on a bed, thats when it starts to revolve around sex. Some of them aren't even wearing bras!

ok how many of you look at just the one pic? how many looked at a few? how many looked at half? Ok i guess the other 95% of you looked at them all...Did ya know that the majority of porn downloaded is done in the Bible Belt?? Fact...So its safe to say that most of YOU with "Family Values" have looked at ALL the pics and most likely will be watching the pageant...Keeping in mind that the "Moral Majority" is NEITHER.....

Looks more like Miss Porn contestants than Miss America! Disgusting to say the least. I'm sure Donald Trump is happy. He's turned what is suppose to be a wholesome event into porn type event. I won't be watching.

I understand that a certain amount of sexiness and looks are involved in this contest, but this is over the top. How are people ever going to take these "scholarship programs" seriously when this is what they see? Beautiful young women deserve to show that off, but I believe this is the wrong way to do it and it goes too far. I have a daughter who is 8, and she would like to watch the pageant, but is this the type of example I want her to see.

I believe that the photographer and make-up people were paid WAY TOO MUCH. Thanks to them, I wouldn't even consider watching the pageant. They managed to take away any semblance of beauty from each of the contestants.
