Miss USA Contestants Wear Ultra Sexy Lingerie for Official Promo Photos

It doesn't air from Sin City until May 16, but the Miss USA pageant is already making headlines.

In order to highlight the contestants vying for the title, Miss USA franchise owner Donald Trump and company hired photographer Fadil Berisha to snap the girls in a "Waking Up In Vegas"-themed promo shoot that skews more Playboy than the wholesome beauty pageant of years past.

In the highly suggestive shots, the women pose on rumpled bedsheets in nothing more than panties, push-up bras, corsets, boy shorts, thigh-high fishnets, and towering pumps. Cleavage, smoky eyes, moist and pouty lips, and big, tousled hair complement their look, which critics have deemed too risqué. But it seems that's exactly the goal.

"To change the look of Miss USA, we've been going in that direction for a few years now. But [this time] I think we succeeded," Berisha explains in this steamy behind-the-scenes clip of the shoot. "All [of the models] were into it and excited about getting these sexy shots. It's more about sensuality and being really sexy."

Miss USA 2010

According to statements that Trump's reps issued to Fox News, the images that the women were required to pose for are being used to break the "pageant princess" stereotype and instead propel an image of "a smart, sexy, and sophisticated modern woman."

Right, because nothing says "smart and sophisticated" like soft-core porn.

Trump continued to defend the photos today, telling "The Insider":

"We are in a different age. They are a little bit sexy, but I'll tell you what -- everybody's watching, so I have no problems with it. The Miss USA pageant and the Miss Universe pageant just got renewed for three years by NBC. The ratings have been terrific. If you look at Miss America, it's now off network television -- and we're doing better than ever, so I really have no problem with it."

Trump's jab at the rival Miss America pageant is no accident.

The 53-year-old Miss USA pageant was created in response to the prudery, per se, of its older sister pageant, Miss America, which started in 1921.

It all happened when Miss America 1951, Yolande Betbeze, refused to wear a swimsuit to promote the contest after accepting her crown.

"Miss America started as a swimsuit pageant, then added a talent portion in the thirties and a scholarship money prize in 1945," explains Elwood Watson, co-author of "There She Is, Miss America: The Politics of Sex, Beauty, and Race in America's Most Famous Pageant."

"When Miss America has a reign, she goes across the country, and the sponsors wanted Betbeze to pose in swimsuits at different events at shopping malls and supermarkets," says Watson. "And she was not willing to do that. She said, 'I played the game by your rules, but now that I've won the pageant, I'm playing by my rules.'"

Betbeze's refusal to wear a swimsuit to promote the contest ("I'm an opera singer, not a pinup," she explained at the time) caused one of the sponsors, Catalina swimwear, to pull out and create its own contests, Miss USA and Miss Universe.

Although swimsuit contests have always existed in both the Miss America and Miss USA pageants -- despite feminist protests in the sixties and public votes in the nineties to ban them from Miss America -- Betbeze still feels her actions have been pivotal in directing pageant progress towards recognizing intellect, values, and leadership, rather than beauty alone. Um, someone get Trump on the line.

Perhaps the over-the-top sexiness of the photos is particularly upsetting now that the U.K. has taken two strides forward this year by trading the swimsuit competition for an athletic challenge at the Miss England pageant, while Miss USA seems to have taken two giant leaps backward.

We're sure Miss California Carrie Prejean -- who was ripped apart last year after sexy pictures of her surfaced -- is somewhere rolling her eyes. And she's not the only one.

What do you think of the photos -- are they appropriately hot or verging on exploitative?

Whats all the fuss about? These so called beauty pageants are all about one thing, sex and more sex.To see it any other way you would have to have your head in a very dark place.

I'm so thrilled that the world can now see the truth! That my daughter was not fired for her "racy" photos...but for her honest answer of her BELIEF that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
These photographs make Carrie look like Mother Theresa.

I knew the truth would come out sooner or later...but this is great that it came out now. I think the Miss USA pageant owes Carrie an apology.

You know, I don't recall any of these women having their arms twisted to take the photos.

When are people going to realize there are beautiful women, who want to participate in this type of pageant and take advantage of one type of God's blessing.

Whether your smart, or beautiful, or athletic, or whatever, if it is done without coercion, and they are happy doing it, then God Bless them.

I, for one, like to look at beautiful women and obviously, they don't mind being looked at, otherwise, they wouldn't have posed for the pictures.

Since they were little, my daughters and I have always enjoyed watching the Miss USA Pageant, and talked about how you could aspire to be attractive, smart, and talented. I never thought the Miss USA would take a turn towards soft porn. I only hope that the network does the right thing and airs it after primetime so that young children don't have to stumble across this inappropriate show. I guess if it's all about the ratings and sex... well they've made their choice. As for my kids and I, we won't be watching. Sad.

I won't be watching the pageant this year, or ANY year that they put out this SMUT to promote it. For years people have said that these girls are exploited and the pageant people have said it's not true. Well, here's the proof that they ARE exploited to the MAX.

Now the world can see the truth - the Miss USA Pageant consists of a bunch of hypocrites!

I especially love the fact that Carrie now looks like Mother Theresa!! and she's getting so many calls from networks that want to interview her about the hypocrisy...and she has no comment.

Who got the last laugh??

I am so disappointed and ashamed in the way these contests/pageants are heading. It looks to me to be just another way to get pornography into everything now days. Of Magazines, Television programs today, are what had been respectful contests/pageants are now aiming at a type of bedroom/bathroom 'playboy'showings. It's becoming that the more "flesh" shown The Better! I will NEVER watch any of these contests/pageants again. I know "Who Cares" if I do or don't BUT Please let's get back to DECENT, RESPECTFUL, BEAUTY, TALENT and INTELLIGENCE.
And the girls who agree to wear the apparel they are told to
wear, FOR SHAME on them too, it lowers their respectability and decency. Sorry, but that is the way I am feeling about our USA morals now-a-days.

How sad that Carrie lost her crown for a photo that looks nothing as "racy" as these??

What hypocrites! Keith Lewis should be ashamed of himself. He's the one that said her photos were racy. Is this a joke or what??

Just shows how hypocritical the Miss USA pageant officials are.

I think this is highly inappropriate. Part of the competition is that girls in beauty pageants are supposed to be held to high standards, and respectable morality. but this plunges them down to a different level. Did anyone ASK the girls if they REALLY wanted to post for these, or did they just tell them it was part of the competition? It's basically making the girls look immoral, and guys are going to be downloading the photos and getting their thrills. Big mistake, Trump and pageant.

It's like the magazine Maxim - which is one of the most disgusting magazines around. AND it has a woman editor. Shame on her. Taking someone who's already a star or on their way, and having them post almost and pretty much naked so guys can get their nasty thrills. Why not just call it Almost Playboy?

honestly, the pictures are beautiful. they are sexy - and not what you'd expect; but sex sells. how many of us would really have read an article about pageants if it weren't for a bit of "scandal" involved. lucky for us it wasnt about a jealous ex and blackmail.

this is terrible. We are trying to teach our daughters not to do pictures like that because they can come back to haunt you later in life. the pictures should be tasteful, not something that looks like it was taken for a men's magazine. All contestants should have original bady parts, unless something had to be replaced due to accident or injury. and go back to one piece swimsuits. the whole thing is like picking a prom queen, who is the most popular & best looking. this is going overboard.

Who needs to watch the pageant. The photographer and makeup artist, along with photoshop, managed to make all the contestants look alike. Except for the the ocassional blonde hair, they all looked like clones of someones fantasy. I would have used several photographers and captured each contestants strengths.

I only saw one emotion in each of their eyes.
