Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb Go Makeup-Free on 'Today'

Kathie Lee Gifford has never been one to back down from controversy. And this morning on the "Today" show, she revealed the naked truth about herself -- and co-host Hoda Kotb!

In an attempt to quash pal Rosie O'Donnell's speculation that she has had cosmetic surgery, Gifford hosted the entire hour makeup free (and scar free), and Kotb did the same to support her TV sister.

"From NBC News, this is a special No Makeup Zone edition of Today, with a bare-faced Kathe Lee Gifford and a makeup-less Hoda Kotb -- Yikes!" an announcer declared at the top of the show, the women with their backs to the camera.

Both Gifford and Kotb were wearing sunglasses when they turned around, to help build up to the big reveal. But first, they gave viewers a glimpse of what it takes to get them ready on a typical morning.

"Here I am, bare and unafraid. The way I go through life. It's the way I roll," a curler-wearing Gifford said in previously shot footage from the makeup room.

While Gifford, 56, tended to make light of being seen without lipstick, an uncomfortable Kotb was more revealing. "I feel naked," she said in the footage. "I'm 45, I feel self-conscious... I just need lips. A little lips and a little mascara, and I'll feel OK."

Once the cameras cut back to the live broadcast, the co-hosts suddenly seemed to have second thoughts about their bold decision. Removing her sunglasses, Gifford said, "I didn't think it was going to bother me, and then I started realizing, you know what, I feel vulnerable." Added Kotb, "It is weird. We're used to having things covered up."

Both Gifford and Kotb seemed to relax as they chatted with guests, including O'Donnell, who joined them -- also without makeup -- via Skype from her radio show to discuss her comments about Gifford's alleged altered appearance.

Though Gifford didn't exactly deny that she'd had work done, she did say, "I think every woman feels -- when we're in this business -- that we have to remain competitive. But at a certain point, you can never compete with the girls that are in the Miss USA pageant and that sort of thing. You just want to look your healthiest and your best."

Fellow "Today" show stars Sara Haines, Meredith Vieira, Ann Curry, and Natalie Morales also showed their solidarity by making foundation-free appearances, as did style editor Bobbie Thomas, who shared tips for enhancing your natural glow, including exfoliating, battling breakouts with Dial antibacterial gold bar soap, and curling your unmascaraed eyelashes (she recommends Japonesque's Eyelash Curler/Go Curl Pocket Curler, $11-$16.50; japonesque.com ).

Unlike the other guests, Sofia Vergara, who was recently named one of the People En Espanol's 50 Most Beautiful, arrived in full face. "You guys are very brave," the "Modern Family" star told Gifford and Kotb, confessing that she won't even go out of the house unless she's made up.

"I'm Colombian," she explained. "We give birth in full makeup, are you crazy?!"

In related news, Kim Kardashian recently posed without makeup for Life & Style magazine.

I think Kathie Lee and Hoda looked radiant! They both have beautiful skin and shouldn't be afraid to show it...I just wish mine looked half as good!

Personally, I think the show was an insult to women. Make up or no make up. This is what the producers decided to put on the air. Make up does not make the women. Self-esteem does. If one feels better about wearing lipstick then wear it - if not don't. They are rich beautiful women with great jobs and loving families. They whined so much about not wearing make up I decided never to watch the show again.

I thought Hoda and Kathie Lee looked great. I was so impressed that today I wore no make-up at all. And I feel great.

Let's be real...they look terrible without makeup. Their true age really shows.

I quit using makeup years ago, probably in my late 20's early 30's. I decided that, as a woman, I looked exactly the way I was supposed to. Men aren't expected to paint themselves up to look good enough for women, so why should women be expected to do just that for men? I am now 60, and my skin looks pretty good for my age, and I have saved a bunch of money along the way too. Do I think I am so beautiful that I don't need makeup? No, I am no great beauty, but I DO have healthy skin and a bit of change in my pocket.

While I'm glad they showed themselves without makeup--big deal! Most of us don't wear much if any makeup on a daily basis, and why is it up to the fashion police to tell us we should? Sure, they look better with makeup but they are on TV and want to be at their best. I wish they wouldn't have made such a big deal out of it. They look like average women, so what!

What do you expect from an over fat cow where no amount of surgery could help!
Rosie needs to go to her queer farm and not show her face for the rest of her life.
she disqusts me; just wants her name in the news and before the media; so what if Kathy Lee and Hoda had surgery; it is a personal thing and certainly not that know it all Rosie. Like I said she is a cow and no amount of make up and/or surgery could help her...
Her poor children!!!!

Kathie had eyeliner and mascara. Maybe she has permanent eyeliner and eyelashes dyed but she was not bare as she claimed.

I agree, I immediately thought that she was either wearing eye makeup (mascara/eyeliner) or had permanent cosmetics (which, if that was the case, she should have disclosed). To go out there and claim to be "bare" was ridiculous - not to mention, insulting, thinking that the viewers were blind enough to believe her. If she was somebody with a darker skin tone, it MAY have been believable, but, she's fair and fair-skinned people (myself included) look VERY obvious without eye makeup. Good try, Kathy!

This presentation wasn't totally accurate. Kathie Lee was wearing more eye makeup, in this segment, than I've used, collectively, in my lifetime. I wish we could have seen Kathie Lee, without her eye makeup, as well. We would have been introduced to something totally natural and believable. When I saw the snipet of Kathie Lee, getting ready in the makeup room, I thought, "Why is she going on and on about being makeup free, when she's wearing layers of mascara and false eyelashes? Unreal.

She wasn't wearing "layers of eyelashes and mascara" Probably permanent eyeliner and a little mascara which , yes, she should have disclosed. You probably could use a lot more makeup then YOU usually wear.

So grateful that to this day @ age 39 i do not wear makeup at all....don't even arch my eyebrows.....learned from a young age that makeup felt too heavy on my skin and vowed never to wear it......i get double takes when one of two teenagers says "MOM" out loud in a store or a mall....most people think me and my daughter are sisters and the same when i am with my mom.....most people think my dad is my husband or boyfriend.....thankful to great genes from my parents and God's blessings.....

Can anyone get Kathy Lee off the show? I can't stand her. Hoda is great, but has begun to take herself down to Kathy Lee's level. Get away from her Hoda, your career will be much better for it.

Hoda and Kathie look great with or without makeup. They normally wear a very natural look so it wasn't a shock to see them without makeup. I think women look better if they have a natural look on a daily basis...and then on special occasions take it up a notch. The difference then will evident.

I thought you looked like perfectly normal people......( and better than average looking)

I bet if you went out in full TV makeup you would look overdone and unnatural...... I commend you......
Because you are both bright and articulate..... I am sure you are thankful for the natural good looks you have....

We all know that TV and magazines and movies are a bunch of fakery.... don't we???? for goodness sake......

Just take care of your health and you will be fine....The world does not revolve around make up ...and...... thanks for pointing that out..... ....I assume some people tune in to your show for just how you look.....but...... I would bet your days salary (so I could update my small bathroom that does not have a shower...so my kids will come and visit me) that most people tune in to hear what you have to say ..

.So If Today does a poll.... and I come out on top.....hire the plumber ......if not... I will get you both a tube of MAYBELLINE.......its all I can afford...LOL (some wine too)
