'Mood' Nail Polish by Perfect Formula Coming This Summer

The Mood Ring has begotten many things. A fashionable finger fad in the mid 1970s, the thermochromic crystal bauble -- itself inspired by early thermotropic forehead thermometers -- went on to drive such 80s fixtures as mood lipstick and Hypercolor t-shirts.
Now, it's being reinvented again, returning to our fingertips in the form of a nail polish.
That's right, Perfect Formula is launching a summer nail polish line that changes color depending on your mood.
But is it really possible that can polish can be as bipolar as we are?
The secret lies in the changes of body heat, which triggers the polish to either transform into cool, deeper tones or warm, brighter hues. Our body temperature cools as we relax or are happy, and heats up when we're excited, nervous or angry.
The environment can of course play with the look of the polish shades too, which you'll instantly see take effect when carrying a steaming cup of coffee or dipping into the pool for a brisk swim.
"A lot of times, your nail beds and tips will be different temperatures, so it looks like a funky French manicure!" founder Shari Gottesman tells StyleList.
Talk about a conversation starter.
A crop of sunny pastel shades with offbeat shades like buttercream, light green and lavender will also launch beside the mood changers in June, and are expected to be a hit among the brand's loyal QVC following.
Gottesman comes from a family with decades-old roots in the paint manufacturing business, to which she expanded into nail lacquers in the 90's. Large pepto bismol pink buckets lined the floors of Gottesman's Upper West Side, NY apartment when StyleList visited for the polish launch event, as a way to illustrate the massive tubs of nail lacquer companies purchase to mix their own shades with.
"I was in the right place at the right time! QVC needed a new nail lady, and someone recommended me!" says the bubbly red-headed Gottesman.
So after a lifetime in the biz, we wanted to know: what is the perfect formula?
"All of my polishes contain keratin and calcium to strengthen nails, and I use a higher percentage of raw materials for a slightly thicker polish that dries harder and stronger. And since I go straight from manufacturing right to the retail counter, I can do it for much less than anyone else can," says Gottesman.
